We explored the hydrologic and ecological responses of a headwater mountain catchment, Loch Vale watershed, to climate change and doubling of atmospheric CO2 scenarios using the Regional Hydro‐Ecological Simulation System (RHESSys). A slight (2°C) cooling, comparable to conditions observed over the past 40 years, led to greater snowpack and slightly less runoff, evaporation, transpiration, and plant productivity. An increase of 2°C yielded the opposite response, but model output for an increase of 4°C showed dramatic changes in timing of hydrologic responses. The snowpack was reduced by 50%, and runoff and soil water increased and occurred 4–5 weeks earlier with 4°C warming. Alpine tundra photosynthetic rates responded more to warmer and wetter conditions than subalpine forest, but subalpine forest showed a greater response to doubling of atmospheric CO2 than tundra. Even though water use efficiency increased with the double CO2 scenario, this had little effect on basin‐wide runoff because the catchment is largely unvegetated. Changes in winter and spring climate conditions were more important to hydrologic and vegetation dynamics than changes that occurred during summer

River Discharge, in State of the Climate in 2008

The global mean temperature in 2008 was slightly cooler than that in 2007; however, it still ranks within the 10 warmest years on record. Annual mean temperatures were generally well above average in South America, northern and southern Africa, Iceland, Europe, Russia, South Asia, and Australia. In contrast, an exceptional cold outbreak occurred during January across Eurasia and over southern European Russia and southern western Siberia. There has been a general increase in land-surface temperatures and in permafrost temperatures during the last several decades throughout the Arctic region, including increases of 1° to 2°C in the last 30 to 35 years in Russia. Record setting warm summer (JJA) air temperatures were observed throughout Greenland

Floods cause more damage in Russia than any other natural disaster, and future climate model projections suggest that the frequency and magnitude of extreme hydrological events will increase in Russia with climate change. Here we analyze daily discharge records from a new data set of 139 Russian gauges in the Eurasian Arctic drainage basin with watershed areas from 16.1 to 50,000 km2 for signs of change in maximum river discharge. Several hypotheses about changes in maximum daily discharge and their linking with trends in precipitation over the cold season were tested. For the magnitude of maximum daily discharge we found relatively equal numbers of significant positive and negative trends across the Russian Arctic drainage basin, which draws into question the hypothesis of an increasing risk of extreme floods. We observed a significant shift to earlier spring discharge, which is consistent with documented changes in snowmelt and freeze‐thaw dates. Spatial analysis of changes in maximum discharge and cold season precipitation revealed consistency across most of the domain, the exception being the Lena basin. Trends in maximum discharge of the small‐ to medium‐sized rivers were generally consistent with aggregated signals found for the downstream gauges of the six largest Russian rivers. Although we observe regional changes in maximum discharge across the Russian Arctic drainage basin, no evidence of widespread trends in extreme discharge can be assumed from our analysis

A conjugate gradient algorithm for the astrometric core solution of Gaia

The ESA space astrometry mission Gaia, planned to be launched in 2013, has been designed to make angular measurements on a global scale with micro-arcsecond accuracy. A key component of the data processing for Gaia is the astrometric core solution, which must implement an efficient and accurate numerical algorithm to solve the resulting, extremely large least-squares problem. The Astrometric Global Iterative Solution (AGIS) is a framework that allows to implement a range of different iterative solution schemes suitable for a scanning astrometric satellite. In order to find a computationally efficient and numerically accurate iteration scheme for the astrometric solution, compatible with the AGIS framework, we study an adaptation of the classical conjugate gradient (CG) algorithm, and compare it to the so-called simple iteration (SI) scheme that was previously known to converge for this problem, although very slowly. The different schemes are implemented within a software test bed for AGIS known as AGISLab, which allows to define, simulate and study scaled astrometric core solutions. After successful testing in AGISLab, the CG scheme has been implemented also in AGIS. The two algorithms CG and SI eventually converge to identical solutions, to within the numerical noise (of the order of 0.00001 micro-arcsec). These solutions are independent of the starting values (initial star catalogue), and we conclude that they are equivalent to a rigorous least-squares estimation of the astrometric parameters. The CG scheme converges up to a factor four faster than SI in the tested cases, and in particular spatially correlated truncation errors are much more efficiently damped out with the CG scheme.Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures. Lessons Learned from Two Years of On-Orbit Global Positioning System Experience on International Space Station

The Global Positioning System Subsystem (GPS) for International Space Station (ISS) was activated April 12,2002 following the installation of the SO truss segment that included the GPS antennas on Shuttle mission STS-110. The ISS GPS receiver became the primary source for position, velocity, and attitude information for ISS two days after activation. The GPS receiver also provides a time reference for manual control of ISS time, and will be used for automatic time updates after problems are resolved with the output from the receiver. After two years of on-orbit experience, the GPS continues to be used as the primary navigation source for ISS; however, enough problems have surfaced that the firmware in the GPS attitude code has had to be totally rewritten and new algorithms developed, the firmware that processed the time output from the GPS receiver had to be rewritten, while the GPS navigation code has had minor revisions. The factors contributing to the delivery of a GPS receiver for use on ISS that requires extensive operator intervention to function are discussed. Observations from two years worth of GPS solutions will also be discussed. The technical solutions to the anomalous GPS receiver behavior will be discussed

A census of ρ\rho Oph candidate members from Gaia DR2

The Ophiuchus cloud complex is one of the best laboratories to study the earlier stages of the stellar and protoplanetary disc evolution. The wealth of accurate astrometric measurements contained in the Gaia Data Release 2 can be used to update the census of Ophiuchus member candidates. We seek to find potential new members of Ophiuchus and identify those surrounded by a circumstellar disc. We constructed a control sample composed of 188 bona fide Ophiuchus members. Using this sample as a reference we applied three different density-based machine learning clustering algorithms (DBSCAN, OPTICS, and HDBSCAN) to a sample drawn from the Gaia catalogue centred on the Ophiuchus cloud. The clustering analysis was applied in the five astrometric dimensions defined by the three-dimensional Cartesian space and the proper motions in right ascension and declination. The three clustering algorithms systematically identify a similar set of candidate members in a main cluster with astrometric properties consistent with those of the control sample. The increased flexibility of the OPTICS and HDBSCAN algorithms enable these methods to identify a secondary cluster. We constructed a common sample containing 391 member candidates including 166 new objects, which have not yet been discussed in the literature. By combining the Gaia data with 2MASS and WISE photometry, we built the spectral energy distributions from 0.5 to 22\microm for a subset of 48 objects and found a total of 41 discs, including 11 Class II and 1 Class III new discs. Density-based clustering algorithms are a promising tool to identify candidate members of star forming regions in large astrometric databases. If confirmed, the candidate members discussed in this work would represent an increment of roughly 40% of the current census of Ophiuchus.Comment: A&A, Accepted. Abridged abstrac

Analysis of Signal Transduction Pathways Regulating Cytokine-Mediated Fc Receptor Activation on Human Eosinophils

Igs can be potent stimulants of eosinophil activation since interaction with IgA or IgG-coated particles can lead to eosinophil degranulation. We have investigated the comparative roles of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases (MAPKs; ERK1/2 and p38) and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) in the priming and regulation of Fc receptor functioning on human eosinophils utilizing a MAPK kinase (MEK) inhibitor (PD98059), a p38 inhibitor SB203580, and the widely used PI3K inhibitors wortmannin and LY294002. We demonstrate that priming of human eosinophils with Th2-derived cytokines, IL-4 and IL-5, differentially activate phosphotyrosine-associated PI3K and ERK and p38 MAP kinases. This activation can be inhibited by pre-incubation with wortmannin or LY294002, PD98059, and SB203580, respectively. Analysis of the effects of the inhibitors on rosette formation between human eosinophils and IgA- or IgG-coated beads revealed that activation of MEK was not required for IgA binding after priming with IL-4 or IL-5. However, inhibition of MEK did inhibit IL-5-primed binding of IgG-beads. The rosette formation of primed eosinophils with IgA-beads could be completely inhibited by wortmannin and LY294002 treatment, demonstrating a critical role for PI3K. Interestingly, inhibition of the p38 pathway also resulted in a complete blockade of IgA rosette formation. This work demonstrates regulatory control by inside-out signaling of Fc receptors by various cytokines on human eosinophils. Thus in vivo the local production of Th2-derived cytokines will regulate the effector functions of Fc receptors
