Erich Fromm and the Critical Theory of Communication
Erich Fromm (1900-1980) was a Marxist psychoanalyst, philosopher and socialist humanist. This paper asks: How can Fromm’s critical theory of communication be used and updated to provide a critical perspective in the age of digital and communicative capitalism?
In order to provide an answer, the article discusses elements from Fromm’s work that allow us to better understand the human communication process. The focus is on communication (section 2), ideology (section 3), and technology (section 4). Fromm’s approach can inform a critical theory of communication in multiple respects: His notion of the social character allows to underpin such a theory with foundations from critical psychology. Fromm’s distinction between the authoritarian and the humanistic character can be used for discerning among authoritarian and humanistic communication. Fromm’s work can also inform ideology critique: The ideology of having shapes life, thought, language and social action in capitalism. In capitalism, technology (including computing) is fetishized and the logic of quantification shapes social relations. Fromm’s quest for humanist technology and participatory computing can inform contemporary debates about digital capitalism and its alternatives
Extended Iterative Scheme for QCD: Three-point Vertices
In the framework of a generalized iterative scheme introduced previously to
account for the non-analytic coupling dependence associated with the
renormalization-group invariant mass scale Lambda, we establish the
self-consistency equations of the extended Feynman rules (Lambda-modified
vertices of zeroth perturbative order) for the three-gluon vertex, the two
ghost vertices, and the two vertices of massless quarks. Calculations are
performed to one-loop-order, in Landau gauge, and at the lowest approximation
level (r=1) of interest for QCD. We discuss the phenomenon of compensating
poles inherent in these equations, by which the formalism automatically cancels
unphysical poles on internal lines, and the role of composite-operator
information in the form of equation-of-motion condensate conditions. The
observed near decoupling of the four-gluon conditions permits a solution to the
2-and-3-point conditions within an effective one-parameter freedom. There
exists a parameter range in which one solution has all vertex coefficients
real, as required for a physical solution, and a narrower range in which the
transverse-gluon and massless-quark propagators both exhibit complex-conjugate

Nuclear Physics from lattice QCD at strong coupling
We study numerically the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD with one flavor
of massless staggered quarks. We determine the complete phase diagram as a
function of temperature and chemical potential, including a tricritical point.
We clarify the nature of the low temperature dense phase, which is strongly
bound nuclear matter. This strong binding is explained by the nuclear
potential, which we measure. Finally, we determine, from this first-principle

The ethical challenge of Touraine's 'living together'
In Can We Live Together? Alain Touraine combines a consummate analysis of crucial social tensions in contemporary societies with a strong normative appeal for a new emancipatory 'Subject' capable of overcoming the twin threats of atomisation or authoritarianism. He calls for a move from 'politics to ethics' and then from ethics back to politics to enable the new Subject to make a reality out of the goals of democracy and solidarity. However, he has little to say about the nature of such an ethics. This article argues that this lacuna could usefully be filled by adopting a form of radical humanism found in the work of Erich Fromm. It defies convention in the social sciences by operating from an explicit view of the 'is' and the 'ought' of common human nature, specifying reason, love and productive work as the qualities to be realised if we are to move closer to human solidarity. Although there remain significant philosophical and political differences between the two positions, particularly on the role to be played by 'the nation', their juxtaposition opens new lines of inquiry in the field of cosmopolitan ethics

A sensitive study of the peculiar jet structure HST-1 in M87
To obtain a better understanding of the location and mechanisms for the
production of the gamma-ray emission in jets of AGN we present a detailed study
of the HST-1 structure, 0.8 arcsec downstream the jet of M87, previously
identified as a possible candidate for TeV emission. HST-1 shows a very
peculiar structure with superluminal as well as possible stationary
sub-components, and appears to be located in the transition from a parabolic to
a conical jet shape, presumably leading to the formation of a recollimation
shock. This scenario is supported by our new RHD simulations in which the
interaction of a moving component with a recollimation shock leads to the
appearance of a new superluminal component. To discern whether HST-1 is
produced by a recollimation shock or some other MHD instability, we present new
polarimetric 2.2 and 5 GHz VLBA, as well as 15, 22 and 43 GHz JVLA observations
obtained between November 2012 and March 2013.Comment: 6 page
Jet-torus connection in radio galaxies: Relativistic hydrodynamics and synthetic emission
High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of active
galactic nuclei have revealed asymmetric structures in the jets of radio
galaxies. These asymmetric structures may be due to internal asymmetries in the
jet, could be induced by the different conditions in the surrounding ambient
medium including the obscuring torus, or a combination of the two. In this
paper we investigate the influence of the ambient medium (including the
obscuring torus) on the observed properties of jets from radio galaxies. We
performed special-relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations of over-pressured
and pressure-matched jets using the special-relativistic hydrodynamics code
\texttt{Ratpenat}, which is based on a second-order accurate finite-volume
method and an approximate Riemann solver. Using a newly developed emission code
to compute the electromagnetic emission, we have investigated the influence of
different ambient medium and torus configurations on the jet structure and
subsequently computed the non-thermal emission produced by the jet and the
thermal absorption due to the torus. To better compare the emission simulations
with observations we produced synthetic radio maps, taking into account the
properties of the observatory. The detailed analysis of our simulations shows
that the observed asymmetries can be produced by the interaction of the jet
with the ambient medium and by the absorption properties of the obscuring

Formal or Informal? Analysis of the Potato Seed System in Rwanda
The aim of the study was to analyze the formal and informal potato seed supply system in Rwanda and their interactions (year 2016). Three instruments were applied during this research: formal and informal interviews and expert interviews. In order to supply Rwandan farmers with high quality seed, the formal and informal systems must be complementary and mutually dependent. It is suggested that the certified seed production must be combined with the development of strong and targeted linkages along with the informal seed sector. At the same time, the strengthening of the informal seed system must be improved to increase the seed quality produced by farmers. The promotion of the integrated participative approaches in breeding, seed production and distribution would help improve the complementary between the two systems. By doing this, the actual quantity of certified seed could have a major impact on the overall seed supply and increase the seed quantity in the country
Flow Cytometric Detection of the Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma: Clinical and Research Applications
Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) is a relatively uncommon B cell-derived neoplasm that presents with rare malignant cells in an abundant reactive background. The diagnosis of CHL currently relies on a combination of morphologic findings and immunohistochemical stains. With the exception of rare cases with dramatically increased malignant populations, isolation of pure viable tumor cells has not been historically possible. Recently, a reliable flow cytometric assay for direct detection and isolation of the malignant cells in this disease has been developed. This assay has proven useful diagnostically and has been clinically validated to have a very high sensitivity and nearly absolute specificity for the diagnosis of CHL in routine clinical samples. This paper describes the methodology for the flow cytometric detection of CHL in clinical samples as well as current state of evaluation of background lymphocytes as an adjunct diagnostic test. Also discussed are exciting research applications of the direct isolation of viable tumor cells in CHL. The current state of flow cytometric evaluation of nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma and T cell-rich large B cell lymphoma is also briefly discussed
F-GAMMA: On the phenomenological classification of continuum radio spectra variability patterns of Fermi blazars
The F-GAMMA program is a coordinated effort to investigate the physics of
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) via multi-frequency monitoring of Fermi blazars.
In the current study we show and discuss the evolution of broad-band radio
spectra, which are measured at ten frequencies between 2.64 and 142 GHz using
the Effelsberg 100-m and the IRAM 30-m telescopes. It is shown that any of the
78 sources studied can be classified in terms of their variability
characteristics in merely 5 types of variability. It is argued that these can
be attributed to only two classes of variability mechanisms. The first four
types are dominated by spectral evolution and can be described by a simple
two-component system composed of: (a) a steep quiescent spectral component from
a large scale jet and (b) a time evolving flare component following the
"Shock-in-Jet" evolutionary path. The fifth type is characterised by an
achromatic change of the broad band spectrum, which could be attributed to a
different mechanism, likely involving differential Doppler boosting caused by
geometrical effects. Here we present the classification, the assumed physical
scenario and the results of calculations that have been performed for the
