A Monte Carlo study of random surface field effect on layering transitions
The effect of a random surface field, within the bimodal distribution, on the
layering transitions in a spin-1/2 Ising thin film is investigated, using Monte
Carlo simulations. It is found that the layering transitions depend strongly on
the concentration of the disorder of the surface magnetic field, for a
fixed temperature, surface and external magnetic fields. Indeed, the critical
concentration at which the magnetisation of each layer changes the
sign discontinuously, decreases for increasing the applied surface magnetic
field, for fixed values of the temperature and the external magnetic field

distribution of positive and negative spins in each layer, are also established

Glass shell manufacturing in space
Highly-uniform, hollow glass spheres (shells), which are used for inertial confinement fusion targets, were formed from metal-organic gel powder feedstock in a vertical furnace. As a result of the rapid pyrolysis caused by the furnace, the gel is transformed to a shell in five distinct stages: (a) surface closure of the porous gel; (b) generation of a closed-cell foam structure in the gel; (c) spheridization of the gel and further expansion of the foam; (d) coalescence of the closed-cell foam to a single-void shell; and (e) fining of the glass shell. The heat transfer from the furnace to the falling gel particle was modeled to determine the effective heating rate of the gel. The model predicts the temperature history for a particle as a function of mass, dimensions, specific heat, and absorptance as well as furnace temperature profile and thermal conductivity of the furnace gas. Glass shell manufacturing in space
Residual gases always found in glass shells are CO2, O2 and N2. In those cases where high water vapor pressure is maintained in the furnace, water is also found in the shells. Other evidence for the existence of water in shells is the presence of water-induced surface weathering of the interior shell surface. Water and CO2 are the predominant volatiles generated by the pyrolysis of both inorganic and hydrolyzed metal-organic gels. The pyrolysates of unhydrolyzed metal-organic gels also contain, in addition to water and CO2, significant levels of organic volatiles, such as ethanol and some hydrocarbons; on complete oxidation, these produce CO2 and water as well. Water is most likely the initial blowing agent, it is produced copiously during the initial stages of heating. In the later stages, CO2 becomes the dominant gas as H2O is lost at increasing rates. Water in the shell arises mainly from gel dehydration, CO2 by sodium bicarbonate/carbonate decomposition and carbon oxidation, and O2 and N2 by permeation of the ambient furnace air through the molten shell wall
Teaching Tip: developing an intercollegiate Twitter forum to aid student exam study and the development of digital professionalism
#VetFinals has been developed as a novel online Twitter teaching event designed to support intercollegiate veterinary teaching using social media. Previous studies in other fields have suggested that Twitter use within universities may have benefits for undergraduate education. This “teaching tip” paper describes a project using Twitter to host online exam study sessions. The project has been a highly successful collaborative effort between the Royal Veterinary College and Nottingham Veterinary School in the UK. Over 4 years, the #VetFinals project has developed into a long-term, self-sustaining enterprise. This initiative provides a semi-structured means for student exam preparation with direct real-time input from a faculty member. It also creates a network of peers both horizontally across institutions and vertically throughout year groups. Based on similar initiatives in other disciplines, an anticipated outcome of this project was to contribute to student online professionalism. This could help address the veterinary community's recently highlighted problems with professional conduct and appropriate use of social media. Analysis of the success of this endeavor will be available in a future publication
Precursors of Cytochrome Oxidase in Cytochrome-Oxidase-Deficient Cells of Neurospora crassa
Three different cell types of Neurospora crassa deficient in cytochrome oxidase were studied: the nuclear mutant cni-1, the cytoplasmic mutant mi-1 and copper-depleted wild-type cells.

The enzyme-deficient cells have retained a functioning mitochondrial protein synthesis. It accounted for 12–16% of the total protein synthesis of the cell. However, the analysis of mitochondrial translation products by gel electrophoresis revealed that different amounts of individual membrane proteins were synthesized. Especially mutant cni-1 produced large amounts of a small molecular weight translation product, which is barely detectable in wild-type.

Mitochondrial preparations of cytochrome-oxidase-deficient cells were examined for precursors of cytochrome oxidase. The presence of polypeptide components of cytochrome oxidase in the mitochondria was established with specific antibodies. On the other hand, no significant amounts of heme a could be extracted.

Radioactively labelled components of cytochrome oxidase were isolated by immunoprecipitation and analysed by gel electrophoresis. All three cell types contained the enzyme components 4–7, which are translated on cytoplasmic ribosomes. The mitochondrially synthesized components 1–3 were present in mi-1 mutant and in copper-depleted wild-type cells. In contrast, components 2 and 3 were not detectable in the nuclear mutant cni-1. Both relative and absolute amounts of these polypeptides in the enzyme-deficient cells were quite different from those in wild-type cells.

The components of cytochrome oxidase found in the enzyme-deficient cells were tightly associated with the mitochondrial membranes.

Glass shell manufacturing in space
A heat transfer model was developed that mathematically describes the heating and calculates the thermal history of a gel particle in free-fall through the furnace. The model parameters that greatly affect the calculations were found to be gel particle mass, geometry, specific heat, and furnace gas. Empirical testing of the model has commenced. The code calculations and the initial empirical testing results both indicate that the gel-to-shell transformation occurs early and rapidly in the thermal history of the gel particle, and that for current work the heat transfer rate is not a limitation in shell production
On the theory of diamagnetism in granular superconductors
We study a highly disordered network of superconducting granules linked by
weak Josephson junctions in magnetic field and develop a mean field theory for
this problem. The diamagnetic response to a slow {\it variations} of magnetic
field is found to be analogous to the response of a type-II superconductor with
extremely strong pinning. We calculate an effective penetration depth
and critical current and find that both and

Intrapreneurship in der beruflichen Erstausbildung: Versuch einer begrifflichen Klärung und Operationalisierung
In den letzten Jahren ist in Forschung und Praxis ein zunehmendes Interesse an unternehmerisch orientierten MitarbeiterInnen, sogenannten IntrapreneurInnen, zu beobachten. Der vorliegende Artikel beschreibt ein Modell für Intrapreneurship in der beruflichen Erstausbildung (Lehre), das empirisch überprüft wird. Es besteht aus den Dimensionen Eigeninitiative, Innovationsorientierung, Leistungsmotivation, Sozialkompetenz, ausbildungsspezifisches Berufskönnen und ausbildungsspezifische Selbständigkeit. Die Ergebnisse bestätigen die postulierte Dimensionalität.There has been an increasing interest in the phenomenon of 'intrapreneurship' (entrepreneurial oriented employees) in the last few years both in research and practice. This paper describes a model of intrapreneurship in the vocational training of young adults which consists of the following dimensions: personal initiative, innovation orientation, need for achievement, social competence, training-specific 'jobability', training- specific autonomous activity. The results show a clear empirical confirmation of the postulated factorial structure
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Compressible Fluid Flow in Two-Dimensional Channels
We study compressible fluid flow in narrow two-dimensional channels using a
novel molecular dynamics simulation method. In the simulation area, an upstream
source is maintained at constant density and temperature while a downstream
reservoir is kept at vacuum. The channel is sufficiently long in the direction
of the flow that the finite length has little effect on the properties of the
fluid in the central region. The simulated system is represented by an
efficient data structure, whose internal elements are created and manipulated
dynamically in a layered fashion. Consequently the code is highly efficient and
manifests completely linear performance in simulations of large systems. We
obtain the steady-state velocity, temperature, and density distributions in the
system. The velocity distribution across the channel is very nearly a quadratic
function of the distance from the center of the channel and reveals velocity
slip at the boundaries; the temperature distribution is only approximately a
quartic function of this distance from the center to the channel. The density
distribution across the channel is non-uniform. We attribute this
non-uniformity to the relatively high Mach number, approximately 0.5, in the
fluid flow. An equation for the density distribution based on simple
compressibility arguments is proposed; its predictions agree well with the
simulation results. Validity of the concept of local dynamic temperature and
