    Factors predicting acceptability of toxicant usage to control feral swine

    2018 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.The population increase and spread of feral swine across the United States is of increasing concern to producers, land managers, the common public, and government. Feral swine carry harmful diseases, cause extensive damage to property, and are opportunistic omnivores that will eat anything. This study explores how mass media coverage and aspects of the cognitive hierarchy influence the specific lethal management action of a toxicant usage to control feral swine. A content media analysis was conducted to observe how the media portrays the toxicant Kaput across different time periods and news platforms. Statistical analysis revealed that a little over half of the articles were published following four major events which included, a) approval of 'Kaput' as a state-limited-use pesticide in Texas b) restraining order against the use of 'Kaput' c) the passing of a bill requiring strict scientific study of any further toxicant before release in Texas, and d) the withdrawal of 'Kaput' in the state of Texas. An additional analysis revealed the most discussed themes within the articles including a) the use of a toxicant as a management tool to control feral swine b) the mention of the toxicant containing a Warfarin base, and c) challenges regarding the toxicant as being species-specific. The majority of these articles were either negative or neutral, mostly describing the toxicant and then explaining the faults in its use. This resulted in the toxicant being pulled off of the market. In addition to the content media analysis, a wildlife survey was mailed out to 200 urban residents and 200 rural residents from each of the 50 United States to measure individuals' wildlife value orientations, general beliefs toward feral swine, and their support or opposition of the use of poison to kill feral swine. The overall response rate was 11%. Statistical analysis revealed that negative attitudes toward feral swine and a domination wildlife value orientation were key identifiers of support for a toxicant lethal management action of feral swine (p < .05). The opposite was determined with a non-significant value for a mutualism value orientation, opposing the use of a toxicant. As wildlife managers and government agencies continue efforts to mitigate damages and manage feral swine, the value orientations and attitudes of the public should be taken into consideration. The lethal management action chosen should reflect the public's value orientations and attitudes to have an accepted management technique suitable to control feral swine as well as support the public

    Predicting Effectiveness of Wood Preservatives From Small Sample Field Trials

    Field tests of wood preservatives use groups of stakes treated at various retentions. Although only an average value is reported for a given group of stakes, the lifetime of individual stakes is quite variable. This paper explores presentations of data that reflect such variability. We also consider the feasibility of predicting the effectiveness of a preservative before all stakes fail. For sample sizes of ten replicate stakes, we suggest that reports include box plots of the actual failure times, and that studies use the sample median for the reported lifetime value rather than the sample mean and report the first quartile as a lower bound for the population average

    Using the Schwinger-Keldysh technique, we derive the transport equations for a system of quantum scalar fields. We first discuss the general structure of the equations and then their collision terms. Taking into account up to three-loop diagrams in \phi^3 model and up to four-loop diagrams in \phi^4 model, we obtain the transport equations which include the contributions of multi-particle collisions and particle production processes, in addition to mean-field effects and binary interactions.Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures, minor changes, to appear in Phys.     Matrix metalloproteinase activities and their relationship with collagen remodelling in tendon pathology

    Our aim was to correlate the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) with denaturation and the turnover of collagen in normal and pathological human tendons. MMPs were extracted from ruptured supraspinatus tendons (n=10), macroscopically normal (‘control’) supraspinatus tendons (n=29) and normal short head of biceps brachii tendons (n=24). Enzyme activity was measured using fluorogenic substrates selective for MMP-1, MMP-3 and enzymes with gelatinolytic activity (MMP-2, MMP-9 and MMP-13). Collagen denaturation was determined by a-chymotrypsin digestion. Protein turnover was determined by measuring the percentage of d-aspartic acid (% d-Asp). Zymography was conducted to identity specific gelatinases. MMP-1 activity was higher in ruptured supraspinatus compared to control supraspinatus and normal biceps brachii tendons (70.9, 26.4 and 11.5 fmol/mg tendon, respectively;

    Phase space spinor amplitudes for spin 1/2 systems

    The concept of phase space amplitudes for systems with continuous degrees of freedom is generalized to finite-dimensional spin systems. Complex amplitudes are obtained on both a sphere and a finite lattice, in each case enabling a more fundamental description of pure spin states than that previously given by Wigner functions. In each case the Wigner function can be expressed as the star product of the amplitude and its conjugate, so providing a generalized Born interpretation of amplitudes that emphasizes their more fundamental status. The ordinary product of the amplitude and its conjugate produces a (generalized) spin Husimi function. The case of spin-\half is treated in detail, and it is shown that phase space amplitudes on the sphere transform correctly as spinors under under rotations, despite their expression in terms of spherical harmonics. Spin amplitudes on a lattice are also found to transform as spinors. Applications are given to the phase space description of state superposition, and to the evolution in phase space of the state of a spin-\half magnetic dipole in a time-dependent magnetic field.Comment: 19 pages, added new results, fixed typo

    Genetic Parameters and Responses of Linear Type, Yield Traits, and Somatic Cell Scores to Divergent Selection for Predicted Transmitting Ability for Type in Holsteins

    The objective was to examine the direct and correlated responses of linear type, yield traits, and somatic cell scores (SCS) to divergent selection for predicted transmitting ability for type (PTAT) in Holsteins, while maintaining selection for yield traits across lines. For four generations, one-half of the University of Nebraska research Holstein herd was bred to Holstein sires with PTAT -1.50 and the other half to sires with PTAT - 1.25, with nearly equal predicted transmitting abilities for yield traits for both groups. Estimates of genetic and residual correlations and heritabilities were obtained from REML estimates of (co)variance components. Model for type traits included fixed effect of date cows were classified, effects of age in days at freshening, and stage of lactation at classification. Year-season when cows freshened was fixed effect in model for yield and SCS. Animal genetic and residual effects were random. Final score, milk, fat, and protein yields, and SCS had heritability estimates of 0.38, 0.13, 0.22, 0.09, and 0.38, respectively. Heritability estimates for type traits ranged from 0.04 to 0.52. Estimates of genetic correlations of final score with SCS and milk, fat, and protein yields were -0.64, 0.01, -0.18, and 0.06, respectively. Estimates of genetic correlations among linear type traits ranged from -0.77 to 1.00. Means of estimated breeding values for final score, stature, strength, body depth, fore udder attachment, rear udder height and width, udder cleft, udder depth, and front teat placement were significantly different between lines in the third generation. Milk, fat, and protein yields were not significantly different between lines in third generation, whereas SCS was significantly different. Estimate of genetic correlation between final score and SCS suggest that selection on PTAT would result in a change for SCS. In this study, divergent selection on PTAT of sires had a significant effect on udder and body traits, but little or no effect on feet and leg traits

    The Economic Impact of Blackbird Damage to Crops

    There are nearly 1,000 species of birds in North America, some of which provide obvious economic benefits like egg production, meat production, bird watching, or hunting (American Bird Association 2016). Some bird species, however, can cause a considerable amount of damage to U.S. agriculture, with estimates of annual damage caused by birds in the United States exceeding US$4.7 billion (Pimentel et al. 2005). Blackbirds (lcteridae) are one group of birds in North America that can cause significant economic damage to commercial grain crops, and to a lesser extent vine and tree crops (Wilson et al. 1989; Dolbeer 1990; Linz et al. 2011; Anderson et al. 2013). Four species of blackbirds-red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), yellow-headed blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus), and brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater)-are primarily responsible for damage to sprouting and ripening grain crops (Lowther 1993; Twedt and Crawford 1995; Yasukawa and Searcy 1995; Peer and Bollinger 1997). During late winter, these species commonly can be found feeding on food present in concentrated animal feedlot operations (Dolbeer et al. 1978). For much of the year, however, these birds forage on insects, waste grain, and weed seeds, thus providing valuable ecological services

    Arboreal Galois groups for cubic polynomials with colliding critical points

    Let KK be a field, and let f∈K(z)f\in K(z) be a rational function of degree d≥2d\geq 2. The Galois group of the field extension generated by the preimages of x0∈Kx_0\in K under all iterates of ff naturally embeds in the automorphism group of an infinite dd-ary rooted tree. In some cases the Galois group can be the full automorphism group of the tree, but in other cases it is known to have infinite index. In this paper, we consider a previously unstudied such case: that ff is a polynomial of degree d=3d=3, and the two finite critical points of ff collide at the ℓ\ell-th iteration, for some ℓ≥2\ell\geq 2. We describe an explicit subgroup Qℓ,∞Q_{\ell,\infty} of automorphisms of the 33-ary tree in which the resulting Galois group must always embed, and we present sufficient conditions for this embedding to be an isomorphism.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figure
