The association of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio with 3-month clinical outcome after mechanical thrombectomy following stroke
Background and aim
Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR) are associated with clinical outcomes in malignancy, cardiovascular disease and stroke. Here we investigate their association with outcome after acute ischaemic stroke treated by mechanical thrombectomy (MT).
Methods
Patients were selected using audit data for MT for acute anterior circulation ischaemic stroke at a UK centre from May 2016–July 2017. Clinical and laboratory data including neutrophil, lymphocyte and monocyte count tested before and 24 h after MT were collected. Poor functional outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale (mRS) of 3–6 at 3 months. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the relationship of NLR and LMR with functional outcome.
Results
One hundred twenty-one patients (mean age 66.4 ± 16.7, 52% female) were included. Higher NLR (adjusted OR 0.022, 95% CI, 0.009–0.34, p = 0.001) and lower LMR (adjusted OR − 0.093, 95% CI (− 0.175)−(− 0.012), p = 0.025) at 24-h post-MT were significantly associated with poorer functional outcome when controlling for age, baseline NIHSS score, infarct size, presence of good collateral supply, recanalisation and symptomatic intracranial haemorrhage on multivariate logistic regression. Admission NLR or LMR were not significant predictors of mRS at 3 months. The optimal cut-off values of NLR and LMR at 24-h post-MT that best discriminated poor outcome were 5.5 (80% sensitivity and 60% specificity) and 2.0 (80% sensitivity and 50% specificity), respectively on receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.
Conclusion
NLR and LMR tested at 24 h after ictus or intervention may predict 3-month functional outcome

Technical assistance, neo-colonialism or mutual trade? The experience of an Anglo/Ukrainian/Russian social work practice learning project
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union there has been a steady stream of Western consultants ready to work in Eastern Europe and Russia and share professional and academic expertise and experience. Social work, unknown as a discrete discipline or profession in the Soviet Union, has been a growth area with funding from a variety of sources to help promote East-West partnerships.Social work theory and practice emphasises critical appraisal of policy and embraces issues of power, discrimination and oppression. Social work educators should therefore be especially alert to the complex ethical questions which these kinds of collaborations raise, and adept at finding practical solutions or workable compromises. This article explores these ethical and political issues with reference to a project to develop social work practice learning in a Russian oblast' (region). The project was an ambitious partnership of British, Ukrainian and Russian educators, involving numerous Russian social work and related agencies, and four Russian universities and colleges in one oblast'. The authors use a series of vignettes to help the reader achieve insights into these East-West transactions. The article concludes with a discussion of different interpretations of these dealings, using three prisms: technical assistance, neo-colonialism and mutual trade
Test-retest reliability of a 16.1 km time trial in trained cyclists using the CompuTrainer ergometer
Laboratory based cycling time trials (TT) are widely used by both researchers and practitioners, as a method of assessing cycling performance in a controlled environment. Assessments of performance often use TT durations or distances between 20 min and one hour and in the UK the 10 mile (16.1 km) TT is the most frequently used race distance for trained cyclists. The 16.1 km TT has received relatively minimal, but increased attention as a performance criterion in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the reliability of 16.1 km TT performance in a large cohort of trained cyclists using the CompuTrainer cycling ergometer. Trained male cyclists (n = 58, mean±SD age 35±7 yr, height 179±6 cm, weight 79.1±9.4 kg, VO2max. 56.6±6.6 ml.kg.min-1, PPO 365±37 W) performed an initial incremental exercise test to determine PPO and VO2max. The participants then performed two 16.1 km TT on a CompuTrainer cycle ergometer separated by 3-7 days. Differences in time, power output and speed were determined using a Wilcoxon signed ranks or paired t-tests. Reproducibility of the TT performance measures was performed using the coefficient of variation (CV), intraclass correlations, and typical error (TE). There were no differences between any of the performance criteria for the whole cohort (Mean difference = 0.06 min, 0.09 km.h-1, 1.5 W, for time, mean speed and power respectively) between TT1 and TT2. All TT performance data were very reproducible (CV range = 1.1-2.7%) and demonstrated trivial or small TE. The slower cyclists demonstrated marginally lower reliability (CV range = 1.3-3.2%) compared to the fastest group (CV range = 0.7-2.0%). The 16.1 km TT on the CompuTrainer represents a very reliable performance criterion for trained cyclists. Interpretation of test-retest performance outcomes should be performed in the context of the TE of each performance indicator

CLEAR II: Evidence for Early Formation of the Most Compact Quiescent Galaxies at High Redshift
The origin of the correlations between mass, morphology, quenched fraction,
and formation history in galaxies is difficult to define, primarily due to the
uncertainties in galaxy star-formation histories. Star-formation histories are
better constrained for higher redshift galaxies, observed closer to their
formation and quenching epochs. Here we use "non-parametric" star-formation
histories and a nested sampling method to derive constraints on the formation
and quenching timescales of quiescent galaxies at . We model deep
HST grism spectroscopy and photometry from the CLEAR (CANDELS Lyman
Emission at Reionization) survey. The galaxy formation redshifts,
(defined as the point where they had formed 50\% of their stellar mass) range
from (shortly prior to the observed epoch) up to . \editone{We find that early formation redshifts are correlated with high
stellar-mass surface densities, 10.25, where is the stellar mass within 1~pkpc (proper kpc).
Quiescent galaxies with the highest stellar-mass surface density, , } show a \textit{minimum} formation
redshift: all such objects in our sample have . Quiescent
galaxies with lower surface density, $\log \Sigma_1 / (M_\odot\
\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}) = 9.5 - 10.25z_{50}
\simeq 1.5 - 8\log\Sigma_1/(M_\odot\ \mathrm{kpc}^{-2})>10.25$ uniquely identifies galaxies
that formed in the first few Gyr after the Big Bang, and we discuss the

Interferometric Follow-Up of WISE Hyper-Luminous Hot, Dust-Obscured Galaxies
WISE has discovered an extraordinary population of hyper-luminous dusty
galaxies which are faint in the two bluer passbands (m and m) but are bright in the two redder passbands of WISE (m and
m). We report on initial follow-up observations of three of these
hot, dust-obscured galaxies, or Hot DOGs, using the CARMA and SMA
interferometer arrays at submm/mm wavelengths. We report continuum detections
at 1.3 mm of two sources (WISE J014946.17+235014.5 and WISE
J223810.20+265319.7, hereafter W0149+2350 and W2238+2653, respectively), and
upper limits to CO line emission at 3 mm in the observed frame for two sources
(W0149+2350 and WISE J181417.29+341224.8, hereafter W1814+3412). The 1.3 mm
continuum images have a resolution of 1-2 arcsec and are consistent with single
point sources. We estimate the masses of cold dust are 2.0 for W0149+2350 and 3.9 for W2238+2653,
comparable to cold dust masses of luminous quasars. We obtain 2 upper
limits to the molecular gas masses traced by CO, which are 3.3 and 2.3 for W0149+2350 and W1814+3412,
respectively. We also present high-resolution, near-IR imaging with WFC3 on the
Hubble Space Telescope for W0149+2653 and with NIRC2 on Keck for W2238+2653.
The near-IR images show morphological structure dominated by a single,
centrally condensed source with effective radius less than 4 kpc. No signs of

The bright-end galaxy candidates at z ~ 9 from 79 independent HST fields
We present a full data analysis of the pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope
(HST) imaging observations in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey
(BoRG[z9]) in Cycle 22. The medium-deep exposures with five HST/WFC3IR+UVIS
filter bands from 79 independent sightlines (~370 arcmin^2) provide the least
biased determination of number density for z>9 bright galaxies against cosmic
variance. After a strict two-step selection for candidate galaxies, including
dropout color and photometric redshift analyses, and revision of previous BoRG
candidates, we identify one source at z~10 and two sources at z~9. The z~10
candidate shows evidence of line-of-sight lens magnification (mu~1.5), yet it
appears surprisingly luminous (MUV ~ -22.6\pm0.3 mag), making it one of the
brightest candidates at z > 8 known (~ 0.3 mag brighter than the z = 8.68
galaxy EGSY8p7, spectroscopically confirmed by Zitrin and collaborators). For z
~ 9 candidates, we include previous data points at fainter magnitudes and find
that the data are well fitted by a Schechter luminosity function with alpha ~
-2.1, MUV ~ -21.5 mag, and log phi ~ -4.5 Mpc^-3mag^-1, for the first time
without fixing any parameters. The inferred cosmic star formation rate density
