A discharge-produced-plasma (DPP) source emitting in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral region is running at the ENEA Frascati Research Centre. The plasma is generated in low-pressure xenon gas and efficiently emits 100-ns duration radiation pulses in the 10–20-nm wavelength range, with an energy of 20 mJ/shot/sr20~\text{mJ}/\text{shot}/\text{sr} at a 10-Hz repetition rate. The complex discharge evolution is constantly examined and controlled with electrical measurements, while a ns-gated CCD camera allowed observation of the discharge development in the visible, detection of time-resolved plasma-column pinching, and optimization of the pre-ionization timing. Accurately calibrated Zr-filtered PIN diodes are used to monitor the temporal behaviour and energy emission of the EUV pulses, while the calibration of a dosimetric film allows quantitative imaging of the emitted radiation. This comprehensive plasma diagnostics has demonstrated its effectiveness in suitably adjusting the source configuration for several applications, such as exposures of photonic materials and innovative photoresists

Aims: To investigate the relationship between changes in physical fitness and cardiovascular risk factors and scores in patients with type 2 diabetes receiving either a behavioural counselling intervention to increase moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) and decrease sedentary-time (SED-time) or standard care. Materials and Methods: This is a pre-specified ancillary analysis of the Italian Diabetes and Exercise Study_2, a 3-year randomized clinical trial in which 300 physically inactive and sedentary patients were randomized 1:1 to receive either a one-month theoretical and practical counselling each year or standard care. Mean changes from baseline throughout the 3-year period in MVPA, SED-time, cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max), muscle strength, flexibility, cardiovascular risk factors and scores were calculated for study completers (n = 267) and considered irrespective of study arm. Results: Haemoglobin (Hb) A1c and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk scores decreased with quartiles of VO2max and lower body muscle strength changes. Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that increases in VO2max independently predicted decreases in HbA1c, blood glucose, diastolic blood pressure (BP), CHD and total stroke 10-year risk and increases in HDL cholesterol, whereas increases in lower body muscle strength independently predicted decreases in body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, triglycerides, systolic BP, CHD and fatal stroke 10-year risk. These associations remained after including changes in BMI, waist circumference, fat mass and fat-free mass, or MVPA and SED-time as covariates. Conclusions: Improvement in physical fitness predicts favourable changes in cardiometabolic risk profile, independent of changes not only in (central) adiposity or body composition but also in MVPA and SED-time. Shadow monochromatic backlighting: Large-field high resolution X-ray shadowgraphy with improved spectral tunability

The shadow monochromatic backlighting (SMB) scheme, a modification of the well-known soft X-ray monochromatic backlighting scheme, is proposed. It is based on a spherical crystal as the dispersive element and extends the traditional scheme by allowing one to work with a wide range of Bragg angles and thus in a wide spectral range. The advantages of the new scheme are demonstrated experimentally and supported numerically by ray-tracing simulations. In the experiments, the X-ray backlighter source is a laser-produced plasma, created by the interaction of an ultrashort pulse, Ti:Sapphire laser (120 fs, 3–5 mJ, 1016 W/cm2 on target) or a short wavelength XeCl laser (10 ns, 1–2 J, 1013 W/cm2 on target) with various solid targets (Dy, Ni + Cr, BaF2). In both experiments, the X-ray sources are well localized spatially (∼20 μm) and are spectrally tunable in a relatively wide wavelength range (λ = 8–15 Å). High quality monochromatic (δλ/λ ∼ 10−5–10−3) images with high spatial resolution (up to ∼4 μm) over a large field of view (a few square millimeters) were obtained. Utilization of spherically bent crystals to obtain high-resolution, large field, monochromatic images in a wide range of Bragg angles (35° < Θ < 90°) is demonstrated for the first time

ACCURATE WAVELENGTH MEASUREMENTS AND MODELING OF Fe XV TO Fe XIX SPECTRA RECORDED IN HIGH-DENSITY PLASMAS BETWEEN 13.5 AND 17 A

Iron spectra have been recorded from plasmas created at three different laser plasma facilities: the Tor Vergata University laser in Rome (Italy), the Hercules laser at ENEA in Frascati (Italy), and the Compact Multipulse Terawatt (COMET) laser at LLNL in California (USA). The measurements provide a means of identifying dielectronic satellite lines from Fe XVI and Fe XV in the vicinity of the strong 2p → 3d transitions of Fe XVII. About 80 Δn ≥ 1 lines of Fe XV (Mg-like) to Fe XIX (O-like) were recorded between 13.8 and 17.1 A with a high spectral resolution (λ/Δλ ≈ 4000); about 30 of these lines are from Fe XVI and Fe XV. The laser-produced plasmas had electron temperatures between 100 and 500 eV and electron densities between 1020 and 1022 cm-3. The Hebrew University Lawrence Livermore Atomic Code (HULLAC) was used to calculate the atomic structure and atomic rates for Fe XV-XIX. HULLAC was used to calculate synthetic line intensities at Te = 200 eV and ne = 1021 cm-3 for three different conditions to illustrate the role of opacity: optically thin plasmas with no excitation-autoionization/dielectronic recombination (EA/DR) contributions to the line intensities, optically thin plasmas that included EA/DR contributions to the line intensities, and optically thick plasmas (optical depth ≈200 μm) that included EA/DR contributions to the line intensities. The optically thick simulation best reproduced the recorded spectrum from the Hercules laser. However, some discrepancies between the modeling and the recorded spectra remain

X-ray radiation from ions with K-shell vacancies

Abstract New types of space resolved X-ray spectra produced in light matter experiments with high intensity lasers have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. This type of spectra is characterised by the disappearance of distinct resonance line emission and the appearance of very broad emission structures due to the dielectronic satellite transitions associated to the resonance lines. Atomic data calculations have shown, that rather exotic states with K-shell vacancies are involved. For quantitative spectra interpretation we developed a model for dielectronic satellite accumulation (DSA-model) in cold dense optically thick plasmas which are tested by rigorous comparison with space resolved spectra from ns-lasers. In experiments with laser intensities up to 10 19 W/cm 2 focused into nitrogen gas targets, hollow ion configurations are observed by means of soft X-ray spectroscopy. It is shown that transitions in hollow ions can be used for plasma diagnostic. The determination of the electron temperature in the long lasting recombining regime is demonstrated. In Light-matter interaction experiments with extremely high contrast (up to 10 10 ) short pulse (400 fs) lasers electron densities of n e ≈3×10 23 cm −3 at temperatures between kT e =200–300 eV have been determined by means of spectral simulations developed previously for ns-laser produced plasmas. Expansion velocities are determined analysing asymmetric optically thick line emission. Further, the results are checked by observing the spectral windows involving the region about the He α -line and the region from the He β -line to the He-like continuum. Finally, plasmas of solid density are characteristic in experiments with heavy ion beams heating massive targets. We report the first spectroscopic investigations in plasmas of this type with results on solid neon heated by Ar-ions. A spectroscopic method for the determination of the electron temperature in extreme optically thick plasmas is developed

This contribution to ECPD2019 is dedicated to the memory of Anatoly Faenov. During a period of approximately thirteen years 1994–2006, Anatoly and his wife Tatiana Pikuz (simply "Tania" for friends), accepting the frequent invitations of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), cooperated with many Italian research laboratories dedicated to EUV and soft X-ray generation, spread in different towns (L'Aquila, Frascati, Milano, Padova, Pisa, Roma, etc.). In spite of the fact that they could stay in Italy only about one or two months per year, their activity was so intense that more than 50 peer- reviewed publications were generated from their experimental and theoretical work (just considering only the results obtained at L'Aquila and Tor Vergata—Rome Universities and at the ENEA Research Center of Frascati), without mentioning the cultural atmosphere that they stimulated in the field of Science and Humanity. The numerous experimental spectra obtained at ENEA by means of their spherically bent mica spectrometers, together with the corresponding theoretical simulations performed in Moscow, allowed to study the changing role of different excitations mechanisms for various plasma conditions, and to characterize at best the ENEA laser-plasma source for different applications: polychromatic and monochromatic micro-radiography of dried biological samples at 1 keV, soft X-ray contact microscopy (SXCM) of living cells in the water-window spectral region, spectroscopy of hollow atoms, etc. In this memorial paper, the main results of biological samples imaging on lithium fluoride (LiF) detectors, obtained with the ENEA and Tor Vergata University laser-plasma sources, are presented. In particular, the improvement of the micro-radiography and of the SXCM techniques obtained after moving from photoresist detectors and photographic films to lithium fluoride (LiF) detectors are discussed, for both dried and wet biological samples

Effect of a Behavioural Intervention for Adoption and Maintenance of a Physically Active Lifestyle on Psychological Well-Being and Quality of Life in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: The IDES_2 Randomized Clinical Trial

    Get PDF
Background: Psychological well-being and quality of life (QoL) are important outcomes of lifestyle interventions, as a positive impact may favour long-term maintenance of behaviour change. Objective: This study investigated the effect of a behavioural intervention for adopting and maintaining an active lifestyle on psychological well-being and health-related QoL in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Three hundred physically inactive and sedentary patients were randomized 1:1 to receive 1 month’s theoretical and practical counselling once a year (intervention group, INT) or standard care (control group, CON) for 3 years. Psychological well-being and QoL, assessed using the World Health Organization (WHO)-5 and the 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) questionnaire, respectively, were pre-specified secondary endpoints. The primary endpoint was sustained behaviour change, as assessed by accelerometer-based measurement of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time. Results: WHO-5 and SF-36 physical and mental component summary (PCS and MCS) scores increased progressively in the INT group and decreased in the CON group, resulting in significant between-group differences (WHO-5: mean difference 7.35 (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.15–11.55), P = 0.0007; PCS 4.20 (95% CI 2.25–6.15), P 150 min·wk−1 of moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA versus those who did not (13.06 (95% CI 7.51–18.61), P < 0.0001), whereas no relationship was detected for QoL. Conclusion: A counselling intervention that was effective in promoting a sustained change in PA and sedentary behaviour significantly improved psychological well-being and QoL. High-accuracy azimuth measurements: The ENEA solar compass in its instrumental and smart version

    No full text
The accurate assessment of the azimuth of a given direction as, e.g., the geographic North, is of utmost importance in many fields. The electronic solar compass patented by ENEA achieves an accuracy of 0.01â—¦, it is up to 100 times cheaper than instruments having similar accuracy (GPS, gyros, . . . ), and it is also very fast in answering (few seconds). It is based on a simple but effective optical system to capture the Sun direction, and on an analytical algorithm to provide the Sun position. The ENEA solar compass has been tested and used in many circumstances, e.g., for mapping surveys, to align concentrating solar mirrors, and for orientation measurements of structures in archaeological sites. We obtained notable results, together with INGV, in magnetic declination measurements in Antarctica. Finally, we moved the ENEA solar compass algorithm to smartphones, enabling their use as orienteering devices
