Two sides of the coin:Patient and provider perceptions of health care delivery to patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
BACKGROUND: Australia is a culturally diverse nation with one in seven Australians born in a non-English speaking country. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) populations are at a high risk of developing preventable chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, renal disease, and chronic respiratory disease, especially communities from the Pacific Islands, the Middle East, North Africa, the Indian subcontinent and China. Previous studies have shown that access to services may be a contributing factor. This study explores the experiences, attitudes and opinions of immigrants from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and their health care providers with regard to chronic disease care. METHODS: Five focus groups were conducted comprising participants from an Arabic speaking background, or born in Sudan, China, Vietnam or Tonga. A total of 50 members participated. All focus groups were conducted in the participantsâ language and facilitated by a trained multicultural health worker. In addition, 14 health care providers were interviewed by telephone. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed. All qualitative data were analysed with the assistance of QSR NVivo 8 software. RESULTS: Participants were generally positive about the quality and accessibility of health services, but the costs of health care and waiting times to receive treatment presented significant barriers. They expressed a need for greater access to interpreters and culturally appropriate communication and education. They mentioned experiencing racism and discriminatory practices. Health professionals recommended recruiting health workers from CALD communities to assist them to adequately elicit and address the needs of patients from CALD backgrounds. CONCLUSIONS: CALD patients, carers and community members as well as health professionals all highlighted the need for establishing culturally tailored programs for chronic disease prevention and management in CALD populations. Better health care can be achieved by ensuring that further investment in culturally specific programs and workforce development is in line with the number of CALD communities and their needs

Neuro-electromagnetic imaging of the human visual cortex
Methods of solving the neuro-electromagnetic inverse problem are examined and developed, with specific reference to the human visual cortex. The anatomy, physiology and function of the human visual system are first reviewed. Mechanisms by which the visual cortex gives rise to external electric and magnetic fields are then discussed, and the forward problem is described mathematically for the case of an isotropic, piecewise homogeneous volume conductor, and then for an anisotropic, concentric, spherical volume conductor. Methods of solving the inverse problem are reviewed, before a new technique is presented. This technique combines prior anatomical information gained from stereotaxic studies, with a probabilistic distributed-source algorithm to yield accurate, realistic inverse solutions. The solution accuracy is enhanced by using both visual evoked electric and magnetic responses simultaneously. The numerical algorithm is then modified to perform equivalent current dipole fitting and minimum norm estimation, and these three techniques are implemented on a transputer array for fast computation. Due to the linear nature of the techniques, they can be executed on up to 22 transputers with close to linear speedup. The latter part of the thesis describes the application of the inverse methods to the analysis of visual evoked electric and magnetic responses. The CIIm peak of the pattern onset evoked magnetic response is deduced to be a product of current flowing away from the surface areas 17, 18 and 19, while the pattern reversal P100m response originates in the same areas, but from oppositely directed current. Cortical retinotopy is examined using sectorial stimuli, the CI and CIm ;peaks of the pattern onset electric and magnetic responses are found to originate from areas V1 and V2 simultaneously, and they therefore do not conform to a simple cruciform model of primary visual cortex

One can associate to such an automorphism two currents and the
equilibrium measure . In this paper we study some
geometric and dynamical properties of these objects. First, we characterize
as the unique measure of maximal entropy. Then we show that the measure
has a local product structure and that the currents have a
laminar structure. This allows us to deduce information about periodic points
and heteroclinic intersections. For example, we prove that the support of
coincides with the closure of the set of saddle points. The methods used
combine the pluripotential theory with the theory of non-uniformly hyperbolic
dynamical systems
Wind Energy And The Environment
Worldwide interest in wind energy has been growing over a number of years. We describe UK wind energy activities with particular reference to the Department of Energy's programme and survey progress with large wind turbines overseas. We review the results of assessment studies which show that wind energy has the potential for supplying a significant proportion of the nation's electricity needs, at a cost which at the lower end of the estimates could probably compete with other conventionl sources. Significant exploitation of the wind energy resource would require large numbers of machines and it is uncertain whether such numbers would in practice turn out to be environmentally acceptable. Factors which will influence this will include (not necessarily in order of importance) visual acceptability and land use restrictions, ecological impacts, electro-magnetic interference, noise and safety. We review each of these aspects and conclude that for land based wind turbines the major impacts are visual intrusiveness, electromagnetic interference (particularly TV interference) and noise. These factors could be significant at all sites, other effects are likely to be site-specific. There are a wide range of pre-existing activities and interests which may impose constraints on the location of wind turbine arrays offshore. Nevertheless when allowance is made for these, the remaining resource is comparable with total UK electricity demand and the size of the available resource need not ¡be a constraint on interest in offshore wind power

Adding flavour to twistor strings
Twistor string theory is known to describe a wide variety of field theories
at tree-level and has proved extremely useful in making substantial progress in
perturbative gauge theory. We explore the twistor dual description of a class
of N=2 UV-finite super-Yang-Mills theories with fundamental flavour by adding
'flavour' branes to the topological B-model on super-twistor space and comment
on the appearance of these objects. Evidence for the correspondence is provided

Characterisation of Float Rocks at Ireson Hill, Gale Crater
Float rocks discovered by surface missions on Mars have given unique insights into the sedimentary, diagenetic and igneous processes that have operated throughout the planets history. In addition, Gale sedimentary rocks, both float and in situ, record a combination of source compositions and diagenetic overprints. We examine a group of float rocks that were identified by the Mars Science Laboratory missions Curiosity rover at the Ireson Hill site, circa. sol 1600 using ChemCam LIBS, APXS and images from the MastCam, Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) and ChemCam Remote Micro-Imager (RMI) cameras. Geochemical data provided by the APXS and ChemCam instruments allow us to compare the compositions of these rocks to known rock types from Gale crater, as well as elsewhere on Mars. Ireson Hill is a 15 m long butte in the Murray formation with a dark cap-ping unit with chemical and stratigraphic consistency with the Stimson formation. What is the value of a standard?
Standards play a critical role in the procurement of defence, and other, systems. Choosing the most appropriate standard is important but has become more topical given the UK Ministry of Defence policy of âas civilian as possible, as military as necessaryâ. Whereas historically managers might have selected from classes of defence standards, this choice set is now increased to include civil standards. We develop a model that has been commissioned by the UK Defence Standardisation whose responsibilities include supporting project teams on the selection of standards. Our model is based on an extension of Bayesian Belief Networks, called an Influence Diagram, which allows decisions and consequences to be represented as well as uncertain-ties. We have developed an initial model for a real case to assess the feasibility and use. We outline the con-text of the defence procurement project in our case study and describe the reasoning underpinning the model structure. We have found that it is possible to develop a simple model that captures the views of multiple stakeholders and informs a reasoned choice about the value of alternative standards
