Juan Latino was the most important poet in Latin language in the spanish city of Granada during the Renaissance. In this study we discuss the social, political, religious and cultural context in which he lived. These historical aspects were of great relevance in the author's life and work, which itself shows the effect of his relations with the city's powerful institutions and authorities
Geophysical and mineralogical characterization of near surface formations of the Loa river Basin (Atacama Desert, Chile)
During 2015 it took place a geotechnical and geophysical exploration in the Atacama Desert (Chile) for the design of a power solar plant.Resistivity data obtained in El Batea Fm. were extremely high (107Ω·m). For this reason,
sampling of near surface geological units were made in order to study its mineralogical composition with X-Ray
Difraction (XRD). Mineral composition of El Batea Fm. shows an almost total absence of water and a very low
porosity. These factors cause that the electrolytic component in this formation is almost negligible, and its electrical conductivity matches with the conductivity of the pure mineral phases. These characteristics are probably due to the extreme environmental conditions. El Batea Fm. has a barrier to evapotranspiration, because the resistivity values of the lower formation are practically normal (103-104Ω·m).Fac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEpu
Multi-Proxy Approach for Identifying Heinrich Events in Sediment Cores from Hatton Bank (NE Atlantic Ocean)
A series of six gravity cores has been used to reconstruct the depositional history of Hatton Bank (Rockall Plateau, NE Atlantic Ocean). The cores have been studied for magnetic susceptibility (MS), geochemical composition, grain size distribution, and a semi-quantitative foraminiferal association. Two main interbedded facies have been described: (i) calcareous ooze; and (ii) lithogenous silt. The study reveals prominent peaks from the MS signal, silt, Mg/Ca, Fe/Ca, Al/Ca, and Rare Earth Elements normalised by Continental Crust (REE/CC), which are sensitive indicators for Heinrich events (H1, H2, H3, H4, and H5) and ash layers. These peaks may relate to alternations in dominance of the calcareous and lithogenic facies. The sediment displays a high percentage of carbonate in interglacial layers but is lithogenic-dominated in glacial stages. The layers with prominent lithic-rich and foraminifera-poor sediments (established as Heinrich layers) may be related to a possible palaeoclimatic effect, where freshwater discharged during iceberg melting may have reduced the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). In the study area, the mean sedimentation rates for the last glacial as ~4.2 cm ka−1 and ~1.4 cm ka−1 for the last ~18 ka (interglacial period) have been estimated. Besides this evidence, Fe/Ca and MS peaks may reflect the presence of basalt, either introduced through ice-rafting or transported and redistributed by bottom currents in the study area. Certain indices, including MS and Fe/Ca, are proposed as good proxies for detecting Heinrich events and ash layers in the Hatton Bank sediments and, in consequence, are parameters that can be used to infer strengthened/weakened NADW formation, according to stadials/interstadials. Moreover, we suggest that the northernmost boundary of the area with evidence of Heinrich events may be situated around 57°38′ N in the Hatton–Rockall area, at least for H4, based on the variation of the Mg/Ca and Fe/Ca curves

UV-Cured Chitosan and Gelatin Hydrogels for the Removal of As(V) and Pb(II) from Water
In this study, new photocurable biobased hydrogels deriving from chitosan and gelatin are designed and tested as sorbents for As(V) and Pb(II) removal from water. Those renewable materials were modified by a simple methacrylation reaction in order to make them light processable. The success of the reaction was evaluated by both (1)H-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The reactivity of those formulations was subsequently investigated by a real-time photorheology test. The obtained hydrogels showed high swelling capability reaching up to 1200% in the case of methacrylated gelatin (GelMA). Subsequently, the Z-potential of the methacrylated chitosan (MCH) and GelMA was measured to correlate their electrostatic surface characteristics with their adsorption properties for As(V) and Pb(II). The pH of the solutions proved to have a huge influence on the As(V) and Pb(II) adsorption capacity of the obtained hydrogels. Furthermore, the effect of As(V) and Pb(II) initial concentration and contact time on the adsorption capability of MCH and GelMA were investigated and discussed. The MCH and GelMA hydrogels demonstrated to be promising sorbents for the removal of heavy metals from polluted waters
A computer vision-based system to help health professionals to apply tests for fall risk assessment
: The increase in life expectancy, and the consequent growth of the elderly population, represents a major challenge to guarantee adequate health and social care. The proposed system aims
to provide a tool that automates the evaluation of gait and balance, essential to prevent falls in older
people. Through an RGB-D camera, it is possible to capture and digitally represent certain parameters that describe how users carry out certain human motions and poses. Such individual motions
and poses are actually related to items included in many well-known gait and balance evaluation
tests. According to that information, therapists, who would not need to be present during the execution of the exercises, evaluate the results of such tests and could issue a diagnosis by storing and
analyzing the sequences provided by the developed system. The system was validated in a laboratory scenario, and subsequently a trial was carried out in a nursing home with six residents. Results
demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system and the ease of objectively evaluating the main
items of clinical tests by using the parameters calculated from information acquired with the RGBD sensor. In addition, it lay the future foundations for creating a Cloud-based platform for remote
fall risk assessment and its integration with a mobile assistant robot, and for designing Artificial
Intelligence models that can detect patterns and identify pathologies for enabling therapists to prevent falls in users under risk. This research was funded by “Project TED2021-130942A-C22 funded by
