Increases in school stress among adolescents are a growing concern. Although perfectionism and parental expectations have an important role in school stress, their joint influence has not been evaluated nor have analyses taken a multidimensional perspective of school stress into consideration. The aims of this study were to analyze the role of self-oriented perfectionism and parental expectations in school stress, and to explore their potential moderation effect in the associations between school stress and health complaints in adolescence. Sample consisted of 4,768 secondary-school students (52.1% girls; M = 13.74) aged 11 to 17 years (M = 13.74) from 54 high schools in Andalusia (Spain), and school stress was measured using ASQ-S questionnaire. Results show that high self-oriented perfectionism and parental expectations were significantly associated with higher levels of school stress. In addition, the three variables school stress, self-oriented perfectionism and parental expectations were significantly associated with health complaints, and self-oriented perfectionism moderated the relationship between stress of school-leisure conflict and health complaints. These findings should be taken into consideration for future research and the development of interventions aimed at reducing school stress among adolescent students

Alcohol is a serious public health concern that has a differential impact on individuals depending upon age and sex. Patterns of alcohol consumption have recently changed: heavy episodic drinking—known as binge-drinking—has become most popular among the youth. Herein, we aimed to investigate the consequences of intermittent adolescent alcohol consumption in male and female animals. Thus, Wistar rats were given free access to ethanol (20% in drinking water) or tap water for 2-h sessions during 3 days, and for an additional 4-h session on the 4th day; every week during adolescence, from postnatal day (pnd) 28–52. During this period, animals consumed a moderate amount of alcohol despite blood ethanol concentration (BEC) did not achieve binge-drinking levels. No withdrawal signs were observed: no changes were observed regarding anxiety-like responses in the elevated plus-maze or plasma corticosterone levels (pnd 53–54). In the novel object recognition (NOR) test (pnd 63), a significant deficit in recognition memory was observed in both male and female rats. Western Blot analyses resulted in an increase in the expression of synaptophysin in the frontal cortex (FC) of male and female animals, together with a decrease in the expression of the CB2R in the same brain region. In addition, adolescent alcohol induced, exclusively among females, a decrease in several markers of dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission, in which epigenetic mechanisms, i.e., histone acetylation, might be involved. Taken together, further research is still needed to specifically correlate sex-specific brain and behavioral consequences of adolescent alcohol exposure

Purpose The aims of the study were to assess self-reported physical activity (PA) levels, barriers to PA, quality of life and self-efficacy to manage chronic disease of prostate cancer survivor 1 year after radiotherapy treatment. Methods A cross-sectional case–control study was performed. Prostate cancer survivor patients treated with radiotherapy were recruited from the Radiation Oncology Service of the “Complejo Hospitalario Universitario” (Granada) and compared with age-matched healthy men. Outcomes included were perception of benefits for physical activity and potential barriers (Exercise Benefits/Barriers Scale), physical activity levels assessed by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), quality of life (EuroQol five-dimension three-levels) and self-efficacy (Self-Efficacy to Manage Chronic Disease). Results A total of 120 patients were included in our study. Significant differences were found between groups with worse results for the prostate cancer patient group in the variable perception of the benefit of physical activity, potential barriers, and physical activity. Regarding quality of life and self-efficacy, significant differences were also observed between groups with a greater score in the control group. Conclusion In conclusion, the results of this study reveal that self-reported PA levels, as measured using the IPAQ, were low in prostate cancer survivors after treatment. Results also showed worse perception of benefits for PA and potential barriers by the cancer survivors. Similarly, the quality of life and self-efficacy to manage chronic disease of prostate cancer survivors was lower.Universidad de Granada/ CBUAThe Spanish Ministry of Education (Grant numbers FPU:20/ 01670, FPU:19/02609, FPU:17/00408)

    Get PDF

Measuring Resilience in Women with Endometriosis

    Get PDF
Endometriosis is a multifactorial disease with pathophysiological factors not yet well known; it also presents a wide symptomatic range that makes us think about the need for multidisciplinary management. It is a chronic disease in which there is no definitive treatment, and is associated in a large majority of cases with psychological pathology. Connecting comorbidities and multimorbidities on a neurobiological, neuropsychological, and pathophysiological level could significantly contribute to their more successful prevention and treatment. In our study, resilience is analyzed as an adjunctive measure in the management of endometriosis. Methods: A multi-centre, cross-sectional study was performed to analyse resilience levels in a sample of Spanish women suffering from endometriosis. CDRIS-25, CDRIS-10, BDI, the STAI, and the SF-36 Health Questionnaire were used for assessments. A representative group of 202 women with endometriosis was recruited by consecutive sampling. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed for both resilience scales. Results: Mean CDRIS-25 and CDRIS-10 scores were 69.58 (SD 15.1) and 29.37 (SD 7.2), respectively. Women with adenomyosis and without signs of deep endometriosis showed the lowest scores. The best predictive model included women's age, years of endometriosis evolution, number of pregnancies, and history of fertility problems as the best predictive factors. Conclusions: Women build resilience as the number of years of evolution of the disease increases. Symptoms such as dyspareunia and continued abdominal pain were more prevalent among less resilient women

A total of 194 cases of patients suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus were reviewed. The hematologic disorders that appeared in the classification criteria were: autoimmune hemolytic anemia (Coombs-positive) in 14 patients (7%), leukopenia in 38 patients (19%), lymphopenia in 28 (14%) and thrombocytopenia in 10 patients (5%). Three patients had the combination of Coombs-positive hemolytic anemia with thrombocytopenia (Fisher-Evans syndrome). Leukopenia was combined with other disorders in 21 cases: leukopenia and lymphopenia in 15 cases; 2 cases of neutropenia, lymphopenia and thrombocytopenia; one case of leukopenia with thrombocytopenia; 3 cases of autoimmune hemolytic anemia with leukopenia. There was no combination of hemolytic anemia with lymphopenia. A patient with Evans-Fisher syndrome also had cryoglobulinemia. In 8 cases of hemolytic anemia the lupus anticoagulant was positive, and the serology was reactive (false positive) in 4 cases; with a combination of autoimmune hemolytic anemia, positive lupus anticoagulant and false-positive serology in some occasions. The statistics include 25 deaths in the group with hematologic disorders, of which 19 patients underwent necropsy and 6 did not. The findings showed 13 cases with significant infections, 9 with vasculitis and 7 patients with necropsy had antiphospholipid syndrome. One patient who died with a diagnosis of pulmonary embolism and myocardial infarction did not undergo the lupus anticoagulant test. Two living patients have antiphospholipid syndrome.
