Bioregional bodies : place-based making and experimental design practices in contemporary jewellery
This research investigates place-based making and experimental design practices in the field of
contemporary jewellery as methods for embodying sensory connections to the land. Motivated by the
proliferation of globalised materials, such as concrete and petrochemical plastics, that contribute to a
sense of placelessness, this project is focussed on enhancing perceptions and knowledge of local
materials foraged from the landscape. Constructing jewellery with materials local to Sydney, such as
sandstone, coal and oyster shells, attends to social, cultural and temporal issues in terms of both
historical and contemporary applications of materials when making jewellery.
Drawing on the work of critical place-based designers and contemporary jewellers from Australia,
New Zealand and Europe, I situate my practice in the field of experimental sustainable design.
Informed by Shinto design traditions that honour materials within my Japanese heritage, I explore
ideas for ecologically engaged critical making.
The theoretical concepts of correspondence and textility presented by Tim Ingold then frame the
creation of objects that explore the relationship between the maker, the material world and the sensory
experience of wearing jewellery on the body. Sarah Pink’s methodology of sensory ethnography is
used to examine aesthetic connections to local environments that emerge through the place-based
method of bioregional foraging. The sensorial qualities of the jewellery series developed for this
Master of Fine Arts practice-based research were critically considered to instrumentalise the naturally
porous and activated surfaces of raw and unfinished materials. The works seek to enhance human
connection to such materials and create embodied understandings of their local ecologies
Novel Prophylactic Vaccine Using a Prime-Boost Method and Hemagglutinating Virus of Japan-Envelope against Tuberculosis
Objective. Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is a major global threat to human health. The only tuberculosis (TB) vaccine currently available is bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), although it has no efficacy in adults. Therefore, the development of a novel vaccine against TB for adults is desired.
Method. A novel TB vaccine expressing mycobacterial heat shock protein 65 (HSP65) and interleukin-12 (IL-12) delivered by the hemagglutinating virus of Japan- (HVJ)- envelope was evaluated against TB infection in mice. Bacterial load reductions and histopathological assessments were used to determine efficacy.
Results. Vaccination by BCG prime with IgHSP65+murine IL-12/HVJ-envelope boost resulted in significant protective efficacy (>10, 000-fold versus BCG alone) against TB infection in the lungs of mice. In addition to bacterial loads, significant protective efficacy was demonstrated by histopathological analysis of the lungs. Furthermore, the vaccine increased the number of T cells secreting IFN-γ.
Conclusion. This vaccine showed extremely significant protection against TB in a mouse model, consistent with results from a similar paper on cynomolgus monkeys. The results suggest that further development of the vaccine for eventual testing in clinical trials may be warranted
Ictal direct current shifts contribute to defining the core ictal focus in epilepsy surgery
難治てんかん焦点の新しいバイオマーカー「発作時DC電位」 --国内5施設の共同研究での世界初の成果--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-09-05.Identifying the minimal and optimal epileptogenic area to resect and cure is the goal of epilepsy surgery. To achieve this, EEG analysis is recognized as the most direct way to detect epileptogenic lesions from spatiotemporal perspectives. Although ictal direct-current shifts (icDCs; below 1 Hz) and ictal high-frequency oscillations (icHFOs; above 80 Hz) have received increasing attention as good indicators that can add more specific information to the conventionally defined seizure-onset zone, large cohort studies on postoperative outcomes are still lacking. This work aimed to clarify whether this additional information, particularly icDCs which is assumed to reflect extracellular potassium concentration, really improve postoperative outcomes. To assess the usefulness in epilepsy surgery, we collected unique EEG datasets recorded with a longer time constant of 10 sec using an alternate current amplifier. 61 patients [15 with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and 46 with neocortical epilepsy] who had undergone invasive presurgical evaluation for medically refractory seizures at five institutes in Japan, were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Among intracranially implanted electrodes, the two core electrodes of both icDCs and icHFOs were independently identified by board-certified clinicians based on unified methods. The occurrence patterns, such as their onset time, duration, and amplitude (power) were evaluated to extract the features of both icDCs and icHFOs. Additionally, we examined whether the resection ratio of the core electrodes of icDCs and icHFOs independently correlated with favorable outcomes. A total of 53 patients with 327 seizures were analyzed for wide-band EEG analysis, and 49 patients were analyzed for outcome analysis. icDCs were detected in the seizure-onset zone more frequently than icHFOs among both patients (92% vs. 71%) and seizures (86% vs. 62%). Additionally, icDCs significantly preceded icHFOs in patients exhibiting both biomarkers, and icDCs occurred more frequently in neocortical epilepsy patients than in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy patients. Finally, although a low corresponding rate was observed for icDCs and icHFOs (39%) at the electrode level, complete resection of the core area of icDCs significantly correlated with favorable outcomes, similar to icHFO outcomes. Our results provide a proof of concept that the independent significance of icDCs from icHFOs should be considered as reliable biomarkers to achieve favorable outcomes in epilepsy surgery. Moreover, the different distribution of the core areas of icDCs and icHFOs may provide new insights into the underlying mechanisms of epilepsy, in which not only neurons but also glial cells may be actively involved via extracellular potassium levels
Alternative Starting Position for CT Coronary Angiography
We examined whether the superior margin of the left main bronchus is the best landmark for the starting position of computed tomography coronary angiography(CTCA). We retrospectively evaluated 693 consecutive CTCAs. From the scout scanogram, the superior margin of the left main bronchus was noted. The relationships among and distance between the superior margin of the left main bronchus and the left coronary system were analyzed. The superior margin of the left main bronchus extended caudally to the superior margin of the left coronary system in 13 patients(1.9%). The addition of 1cm to the superior margin of the left main bronchus kept it caudal to the superior margin of the left coronary system in only one patient(0.1%). On the scout scanogram, 1cm above the superior margin of the left main bronchus is the most appropriate starting position for CTCA
Silencing of p53 and CDKN1A establishes sustainable immortalized megakaryocyte progenitor cells from human iPSCs

The shortage of donors and the potential of universal HLA-null platelet products have stimulated research on the ex vivo differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) to platelets. We recently established expandable immortalized megakaryocyte cell lines (imMKCLs) from hPSCs by transducing MYC, BMI1, and BCL-XL (MBX). imMKCLs can act as cryopreservable master cells to supply platelet concentrates. However, the proliferation rates of the imMKCLs vary with the starting hPSC clone. In this study, we reveal from the gene expression profiles of several MKCL clones that the proliferation arrest is correlated with the expression levels of specific cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors. Silencing CDKN1A and p53 with the overexpression of MBX was effective at stably inducing imMKCLs that generate functional platelets irrespective of the hPSC clone. Collectively, this improvement in generating imMKCLs should contribute to platelet industrialization and platelet biology
福島県における血算検査報告単位の使用状況と問題点
In comprehensive health chck performed in Japan, many errors have been found that were caused by manually transcribing family doctor’s reports or commissioned health check company’s reports to Medical Examination Record and Results Report. Since those errors included unit’s error of blood tests that caused digits differences, we hereby present the result of an investigation on current situation of blood test reporting units in Japan. However, most of the domestic or overseas quality control programs used international units, except for that conducted by the Japan Medical Association. We consider that it might be possible to prevent medical malpractices caused by erroneous judgment on health check results, by unifying the blood test reporting units upon sharing patients’ information among medical facilities
