Evaluación continua en grupos numerosos
Se presentan experiencias de la asignatura de maquinaria y medios auxiliares del grado de Ingeniería Civil de la Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica de Obras Públicas de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, para el desarrollo de la evaluación continua en grupos numerosos. En ellas se realizan actividades diferentes, se realiza un análisis estadístico para analizar directamente la repercusión en los resultados obtenidos por los alumnos en estas actividades, así como experiencias del alumnado para conocer las opiniones. En esta experiencia se utiliza Moodle como entorno de aprendizaje, con lo cual se consigue la automatización de algunas actividades. Los resultados son satisfactorios, llegando a evaluación continua con presentación de distintas tareas evaluables todas las semanas, con poco esfuerzo para el profesor, demostrando que el alumno aprende, y que todas las actividades miden el aprendizaje incluso las que tienen formas de evaluación más dudosa como las de grupo o las que puntúan simplemente por entregarlas
Asymptotically Friedmann self-similar scalar field solutions with potential
We investigate self-similar solutions which are asymptotic to the Friedmann
universe at spatial infinity and contain a scalar field with potential. The
potential is required to be exponential by self-similarity. It is found that
there are two distinct one-parameter families of asymptotic solutions,one is
asymptotic to the proper Friedmann universe, while the other is asymptotic to
the quasi-Friedmann universe, i.e., the Friedmann universe with anomalous solid
angle. The asymptotically proper Friedmann solution is possible only if the
universe is accelerated or the potential is negative. If the potential is
positive, the density perturbation in the asymptotically proper Friedmann
solution rapidly falls off at spatial infinity, while the mass perturbation is
compensated. In the asymptotically quasi-Friedmann solution, the density
perturbation falls off only in proportion to the inverse square of the areal
radius and the relative mass perturbation approaches a nonzero constant at
spatial infinity. The present result shows that a necessary condition holds in
order that a self-gravitating body grows self-similarly due to the constant

Performance of various quantum key distribution systems using 1.55 um up-conversion single-photon detectors
We compare the performance of various quantum key distribution (QKD) systems
using a novel single-photon detector, which combines frequency up-conversion in
a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide and a silicon avalanche
photodiode (APD). The comparison is based on the secure communication rate as a
function of distance for three QKD protocols: the Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84),
the Bennett, Brassard, and Mermin 1992 (BBM92), and the coherent differential
phase shift keying (DPSK). We show that the up-conversion detector allows for
higher communication rates and longer communication distances than the commonly
used InGaAs/InP APD for all the three QKD protocols.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
Quiescence-inducing neurons-induced hypometabolism ameliorates acute kidney injury in a mouse model mimicking cardiovascular surgery requiring circulatory arrest
OBJECTIVES: Acute kidney injury is a serious complication after cardiovascular surgery requiring circulatory arrest. It is reported that mice can be induced into a hibernation-like hypometabolic state by stimulating a specific neuron located at the hypothalamus (quiescence-inducing neurons-induced hypometabolism [QIH]). Here, we investigated the efficacy of QIH for the amelioration of acute kidney injury in an experimental circulatory arrest using a transgenic mouse model. METHODS: We genetically prepared mice in which QIH can be conditionally induced (QIH-ready mice). Mice were divided into 4 groups (n = 6 for each): QIH-ready normothermia (QN), QIH-ready hypothermia (QH), control normothermia (CN), and control hypothermia (CH). After induction of QIH, left thoracotomy and descending aorta crossclamping were conducted. After reperfusion, we collected kidneys and evaluated histologic changes and serum biochemical markers, specifically neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and cystatin C, indicating early kidney injury. RESULTS: Normothermia showed higher tubular injury scores than those in hypothermia (QN vs QH [P = .0021] and CN vs CH [P < .001]). QN exhibited lower neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and cystatin C levels than those in CN (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin: CN vs QN: 1.51 ± 0.71 vs 0.82 ± 0.32; P = .0414 and cystatin C: 1.48 ± 0.39 vs 0.71 ± 0.26; P = .0015). There was no significant difference between QN and QH. CONCLUSIONS: QIH partly ameliorated acute kidney injury in a mouse ischemia model even in normothermia. QIH might be a promising approach to achieving sufficient kidney protection without hypothermic circulatory arrest in the future
Resolution of null fiber and conormal bundles on the Lagrangian Grassmannian
We study the null fiber of a moment map related to dual pairs. We construct
an equivariant resolution of singularities of the null fiber, and get conormal
bundles of closed -orbits in the Lagrangian Grassmannian as the
categorical quotient. The conormal bundles thus obtained turn out to be a
resolution of singularities of the closure of nilpotent -orbits, which

A Goal-based Framework for Contextual Requirements Modeling and Analysis
Requirements Engineering (RE) research often ignores, or presumes a uniform nature of the context in which the system operates. This assumption is no longer valid in emerging computing paradigms, such as ambient, pervasive and ubiquitous computing, where it is essential to monitor and adapt to an inherently varying context. Besides influencing the software, context may influence stakeholders' goals and their choices to meet them. In this paper, we propose a goal-oriented RE modeling and reasoning framework for systems operating in varying contexts. We introduce contextual goal models to relate goals and contexts; context analysis to refine contexts and identify ways to verify them; reasoning techniques to derive requirements reflecting the context and users priorities at runtime; and finally, design time reasoning techniques to derive requirements for a system to be developed at minimum cost and valid in all considered contexts. We illustrate and evaluate our approach through a case study about a museum-guide mobile information system
Intraperitoneal administration of telomerase-specific oncolytic adenovirus sensitizes ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin and affects survival in a xenograft model with peritoneal dissemination
Despite tremendous development in chemotherapy for ovarian cancer over the past few decades, the prognosis of advanced cases with massive peritoneal dissemination is still unsatisfactory, and novel treatment modalities that can combine with chemotherapy are urgently needed. We recently developed virotherapy for solid tumors using telomerase-specific replication-selective adenoviruses (Telomelysin: OBP-301), in which the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene promoter has been inserted to direct tumor-specific E1 gene expression. In this study, we investigated the anti-tumor effects of OBP-301, combined with cisplatin (CDDP), on ovarian cancer cells. In vitro treatment of SKOV3 cells with OBP-301 at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 0.01–100 induced significant cell death in a dose-dependent manner, with moderate cytotoxicity at an MOI of 1–10 and maximal cytotoxicity at an MOI of 100. In contrast, OBP-301 treatment of normal human cells showed no significant cell death at an MOI of 1–10 and exhibited modest cytotoxicity at an MOI of 100. The effects of low-dose CDDP at 0.5–1 μM, which induced only 20% cell death, were significantly augmented by combination with OBP-301 at an MOI of 1–10, finally achieving 40% cell death. Such enhancement of CDDP sensitivity was also observed in CDDP-resistant ovarian cancer cells. The combinatorial effects were further tested using a xenograft mouse model of SKOV3 with peritoneal dissemination. After intraperitoneal administration of OBP-301, we confirmed that injected OBP-301 fused with the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene (OBP-401) was preferentially localized to peritoneal disseminations, as determined by fluorescence imaging. Treatment of mice with CDDP at low dose (0.5 mg kg–1) had modest effects, showing a 10% decrease in disseminations, whereas combination with intraperitoneal administration of OBP-301 at an MOI of 10 led to enhanced effects, achieving an approximately 80% decrease in disseminations. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed improved overall survival of mice treated with CDDP plus OBP-301 compared with CDDP alone. These findings support the therapeutic potential of intraperitoneal administration of OBP-301 to sensitize ovarian cancer cells to CDDP
Expression of AP1 during cellular differentiation determines human papillomavirus E6/E7 expression in stratified epithelial cells
E6 and E7 oncoproteins of human papillomavirus (HPV) play significant roles in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer. However, the pattern of E6/E7 expression during the productive virus life cycle in differentiating epithelia of the uterine cervix remains unclear. In addition, little is known about the cellular factors regulating E6/E7 expression in differentiating epithelia. In the present study, using transient expression assays and DNA binding assays, we demonstrated that E6/E7 transcription is critically regulated by the cellular factor AP1, a Jun/Fos heterodimer complex. Immunohistochemical analyses of various uterine cervical lesions showed AP1 expression in lower cell layers of normal cervix and low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), while it was detected throughout all layers in high-grade CIN and invasive cancer. In situ RNA-RNA hybridization analyses of organotypic raft culture specimens of an HPV-31-containing cell line revealed that E6/E7 transcripts were expressed in most cell layers, with reduced expression in differentiated cells. This pattern of HPV expression correlated with the pattern of AP1 expression detected by immunohistochemicaI analyses. These findings suggest that E6/E7 expression in differentiating epithelia is dependent on AP1, which appears to be associated with proliferative activity of the cells. Since E6/E7 expression induces cell proliferation, co-expression of AP1 and E6/E7 in undifferentiated cell layers might create a positive regulatory loop, probably contributing to maintenance of initial HPV infection and subsequent activation in basal and suprabasal cell layers
