    Digital Marketing in Small and Medium Enterprises: Evidence from the Industrial Supplies Sector in Singapore

    In this digital age, technology has affected many company businesses, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs). From the perspective of resource-based theory (RBT), SMEs inherently possess limited resources reducing the companies’ competitiveness in the marketplace. In the Singapore business environment, it becomes tough particularly for the industrial supplies SMEs. These companies are heavily dependent on their relationship-based networks (RBN) for surviving their businesses. Despite the Singapore government’s initiatives to encourage the industrial supplies SMEs to digitalise their marketing efforts, the response has been lukewarm which can be detrimental to their business sustainability in a competitive market space.This study burrows in-depth into understanding the role of digital marketing as a strategic tool for industrial supplies SMEs in Singapore. This would allow SME owners/managers to comprehend the role of digital marketing (DM) tools in forging a sustainable competitive advantage for these companies. The data for this study was collected by conducting 10 semi-structured interviews through purposive sampling. Six owners/managers of the industrial supplies SMEs in Singapore and four customers with digital marketing capabilities were selected for the interviews. This dyadic approach was applied to improve the validity of this study.The study findings of this thesis would enrich the digital marketing literature. A novel approach was posited by combining the RBT and RBN as the underpinning theories to investigate the role of digital marketing in forging competitive advantages for industrial supplies SMEs in Singapore. This thesis recommends DM tools that are helpful to improve business performance despite having limited company resources. An action framework that guides SME owners/managers in adopting digital marketing innovation in their businesses was postulated to enable these practitioners to build more RBNs and increase customer retention

    The views and experiences of people with myeloma referred for autologous stem cell transplantation, who declined to participate in a physiotherapist-led exercise trial: a qualitative study

    BACKGROUND: Recruitment rates to rehabilitation trials are variable among cancer survivors, and deeper investigation into the causes for declining participation is needed. The aim of this study was to qualitatively explore the experiences of people with myeloma referred for autologous stem cell transplant who were approached to take part in a physiotherapist-led exercise trial but declined. METHODS: Participants were asked to participate in this qualitative study after declining to participate in a trial conducted at a UK tertiary cancer center. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data was analyzed inductively using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Interviews from 18 myeloma patients (56% male, mean age 62 years) were analyzed. Four themes were identified: 1) Traveling to the specialist center is challenging, not just logistically; 2) Individualized approach valued but recall of research information variable; 3) Being less active has profound impact yet ameliorative support is lacking; and 4) Common side-effects of treatment are expected and endured but personal impact underestimated and unaddressed. CONCLUSION: A number of barriers to participation were identified. Travel, a commonly cited reason for declining research participation, is more than a logistical issue for cancer survivors experiencing side-effects and the time burden of clinical appointments. Expectation or knowledge of the typical side-effects from myeloma and its treatment may lead to under-reporting of concerns to care providers, despite their impact upon daily activities and quality of life. Approaches used for research recruitment should consider the timing and consequences of ongoing cancer treatment to reduce potential barriers to participation

    Effect of sintering temperature on the superconducting properties of MgB2 superconductor co-added with a high concentration of Si and C

    In this study, as much as 10 and 15 wt.% nanosized silicon and carbon (Si+C) were reacted with (Mg+2B) at 650°C and 850°C, respectively, for 1 hour. The phase formation, surface morphology and superconducting properties of these samples were evaluated. The relative peak intensity as calculated from the XRD patterns indicates the formation of large Mg2Si volume fraction at low sintering temperature. MgB4 phase was detected in the samples sintered at high temperature as a result of Mg deficiency. The C substitution level as estimated from the lattice parameters, was shown to increase in the samples reacted with a higher amount of (Si+C) at high temperature. Scanning electron micrograph showed that (Si+C) co-addition had refined the grain size and improved the grain coupling of MgB2. The superconducting transition temperature was found to decrease with increasing addition level. The superconducting transition width was also broadened because of a large volume fraction of secondary phases. The improved field dependent critical current density at both 5 K and 20 K is accounted to enhanced scattering by C substitution and grain boundary pinning

    Exercise prehabilitation for people with myeloma undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation: results from PERCEPT pilot randomised controlled trial

    BACKGROUND: Autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) is first line treatment for newly diagnosed patients with myeloma but often results in functional deficits and reduced quality of life (QOL). Physically active myeloma patients have better QOL, less fatigue and reduced morbidity. This trial aimed to investigate the feasibility of a physiotherapist-led exercise intervention delivered across the continuum of the myeloma ASCT pathway at a UK centre. Initially designed and delivered as a face-to-face trial, the study protocol was adapted to virtual delivery in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A pilot randomised controlled trial of a partly supervised exercise intervention with incorporated behaviour change techniques delivered before, during and for 3 months following ASCT compared to usual care. Face-to-face delivery of the pre-ASCT supervised intervention was adapted to virtually-supervised group classes via video conferencing. Primary outcomes related to feasibility; recruitment rate, attrition and adherence. Secondary outcomes included patient reported measures of QOL (EORTC C30, FACT-BMT, EQ5D), and fatigue (FACIT-F), measures of functional capacity (six-minute walk test (6MWT), timed sit-to-stand (TSTS), hand grip strength, self-reported and objective physical activity (PA). RESULTS: Over 11 months 50 participants were enrolled and randomised. Overall, uptake to the study was 46%. The attrition rate was 34%, mainly related to failure to undergo ASCT. Loss of follow-up for other reasons was low. Secondary outcomes demonstrate potential for the benefit of exercise prior to, during and after ASCT with improvements in QOL, fatigue, functional capacity and PA evident on admission for ASCT and 3 months post-ASCT. DISCUSSION: Results indicate acceptability and feasibility of delivering exercise prehabilitation, in person and virtually within the ASCT pathway in myeloma. The effects of prehabilitation and rehabilitation provision as a component of the ASCT pathway warrants further investigation

    "What I wanted to do was build myself back up and prepare": qualitative findings from the PERCEPT trial of prehabilitation during autologous stem cell transplantation in myeloma

    BACKGROUND: The addition of qualitative methodology to randomised controlled trials evaluating complex interventions allows better understanding of contextualised factors and their potential influence on trial delivery and outcomes, as well as opportunities for feedback on trial participation to improve future trial protocols. This study explored the experiences of participation in cancer rehabilitation research during active cancer treatment. Participants were people living with haematological cancer myeloma, undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) recruited to the PERCEPT myeloma pilot trial. METHODS: A qualitative semi-structured interview study, embedded within a pilot randomised controlled trial of a physiotherapist-led exercise intervention delivered before, during and after ASCT among people living with myeloma. Transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Interviews from 16 trial participants (n = 8 intervention group; n = 8 control group; mean age 61 years, 56% male) were analysed. Four main themes were identified: (1) "It's not just beneficial for me, it's for people after me as well"; (2) Disparities in experience of recovery - expectations, feeling prepared and support; (3) "What I wanted to do was build myself back up and prepare"; (4) Active ingredients - participants' experience of the trial intervention. Participants reported both altruistic and perceived personal gain as motivators for enrolling in the trial. Disappointment caused by allocation to control arm may have led to participants seeking exercise elsewhere, indicating possible contamination of control condition. Disparities in experience of recovery from transplant were evident with intervention participants reporting greater trajectory of recovery. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this embedded qualitative study highlight numerous considerations required when designing pilot and efficacy trials of complex interventions. The addition of qualitative investigation offers greater understanding of motivations for participation, intervention mechanisms at play as well as effects of participation that may impact interpretation of quantitative outcomes.     Adaptation of the PERCEPT myeloma prehabilitation trial to virtual delivery: changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic

    Introduction and objective Research activity was impacted by the novel COVID-19 pandemic, the PERCEPT myeloma trial was no exception. This pilot randomised trial delivered a face-to-face exercise intervention prior to and during autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in myeloma patients, as a consequence of COVID-19 it required significant adaptions to continue. This brief communication describes how the previously published study protocol was adapted for virtual delivery. In addition, we highlight the challenge of continuing the study which was embedded within a clinical pathway also impacted by the pandemic. Summary The original trial protocol was amended and continued to recruit and deliver an exercise prehabilitation intervention virtually. Continued delivery of the intervention was deemed important to participants already enrolled within the trial and the adapted virtual version of the trial was acceptable to the research ethics committee as well as participants. Development of effective, remotely delivered rehabilitation and physical activity programmes are likely to benefit people living with myeloma. The COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to explore the feasibility of a virtual programme for ASCT recipients, however, continued changes to the clinical pathway within which the study was embedded posed the greatest challenge and ultimately led to early termination of recruitment.     X-ray powder diffraction study on the MgB2 superconductor reacted with nano-SiC: the effects of sintering temperature

    SiC added MgB2 polycrystalline samples were synthesized at low (650°C) and high (850°C) temperatures in order to study the sintering effect on the phase formation and superconducting properties. The MgB2 bulks with additions of 0wt%, 1wt%, 3wt% and 5wt% SiC were studied with powder X-ray diffraction technique. We observed that MgB2 remained as the primary phase for both sintering temperatures in all samples with the presence of MgO and Mg2Si as the main impurities. Some diffraction peaks associated with unreacted SiC is also noticeable. The relative intensity of the Mg2Si peaks was found to decrease in samples sintered at higher temperature. Temperature dependent magnetic moment measurements showed that the superconducting transition temperature, Tc decreases as the SiC addition level increases while lower sintering temperature degrades Tc to a greater extent.     Effects of nano-SiC addition on the superconducting properties of magnesium diboride

    In this study, we report the results on phase formation, microstructures, and superconducting properties of a series of MgB2 samples with different level of SiC additions. The polycrystalline samples were prepared via solid state reaction by mixing magnesium, boron and silicone carbide powders according to the ratio of Mg:B:SiC = 1:2:x. XRD spectra showed that MgB2 is the primary phase while Mg2Si, MgO and MgB4, together with some unreacted SiC are the secondary phases as the addition increases. The presence of Mg2Si became more significant as the addition level increased. SEM images showed smaller grains as the addition level increases indicating more grain boundaries were formed. The Tc was as low as 30.5K for x=15wt%. The field dependence of Jc showed that x=1wt% sample gave the best performance at both 5K and 20K

    ARBITRARY HYBRID TURBULENCE MODELING APPROACH FOR HIGH-FIDELITY NREL PHASE VIWIND TURBINE CFD SIMULATION

    Today, growth in renewable energy is increasing, and wind energy is one of the key renewable energy sources which is helping to reduce carbon emissions and build a more sustainable world. Developed countries and worldwide organizations are investing in technology and industrial application development. However, extensive experiments using wind turbines are expensive, and numerical simulations are a cheaper alternative for advanced analysis of wind turbines. The aerodynamic properties of wind turbines can be analyzed and optimized using CFD tools. Currently, there is a general lack of available high-fidelity analysis for the wind turbine design community. This study aims to fill this urgent gap. In this paper, an arbitrary hybrid turbulence model (AHTM) was implemented in the open-source code OpenFOAM and compared with the traditional URANS model using the NREL Phase VI wind turbine as a benchmark case. It was found that the AHTM model gives more accurate results than the traditional URANS model. Furthermore, the results of the VLES and URANS models can be improved by improving the mesh quality for usage of higher-order schemes and taking into consideration aeroelastic properties of the wind turbine, which will pave the way for high-fidelity concurrent multidisciplinary design optimization of wind turbines
