    Complete Break Up of Ortho Positronium (Ps)- Hydrogenic ion System

    The dynamics of the complete breakup process in an Ortho Ps - He+ system including electron loss to the continuum (ELC) is studied where both the projectile and the target get ionized. The process is essentially a four body problem and the present model takes account of the two centre effect on the electron ejected from the Ps atom which is crucial for a proper description of the ELC phenomena. The calculations are performed in the framework of Coulomb Distorted Eikonal Approximation. The exchange effect between the target and the projectile electron is taken into account in a consistent manner. The proper asymptotic 3-body boundary condition for this ionization process is also satisfied in the present model. A distinct broad ELC peak is noted in the fully differential cross sections (5DCS) for the Ps electron corroborating qualitatively the experiment for the Ps - He system. Both the dynamics of the ELC from the Ps and the ejected electron from the target He+ in the FDCS are studied using coplanar geometry. Interesting features are noted in the FDCS for both the electrons belonging to the target and the projectile.Comment: 14 pages,7 figure

    Research in Medical Education: Balancing Service and Science*

    Since the latter part of the 1990’s, the English-speaking medical education community has been engaged in a debate concerning the types of research that should have priority. To shed light on this debate and to better understand its implications for the practice of research, 23 semi-structured interviews were conducted with “influential figures” from the community. The results were analyzed using the concept of “field” developed by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The results reveal that a large majority of these influential figures believe that research in medical education continues to be of insufficient quality despite the progress that has taken place over the past 2 decades. According to this group, studies tend to be both redundant and opportunistic, and researchers tend to have limited understanding of both theory and methodological practice from the social sciences. Three factors were identified by the participants to explain the current problems in research: the working conditions of researchers, budgetary restraints in financing research in medical education, and the conception of research in the medical environment. Two principal means for improving research are presented: intensifying collaboration between PhD’s and clinicians, and encouraging the diversification of perspectives brought to bear on research in medical education

    The interpersonal communication approach to HIV/AIDS prevention: strategies and challenges for faith-based organizations.

    This study examines the interpersonal communication approach to HIV/AIDS prevention within Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) in Jamaica. Applying concepts from the social influence and social learning theories, the study examines communication strategies, challenges and concerns that religious leaders face in their communication efforts. Data gathered qualitatively through focus groups and in-depth interviews indicate that FBOs are social and cultural entities with potential to influence knowledge,attitude and behaviour for HIV/AIDS prevention. However, issues related to content, context, culture, the prevailing AIDS-related stigma alongside religious leaders’ personal characteristics hamper their communication initiatives. Capacity building of leaders as HIV/AIDS communicators and behaviour change facilitators and a collaborative effort between FBOs and health organizations would enhance their HIV/AIDS response

    ‘I am not someone who gets skin cancer’: Risk, time and malignant melanoma

    ‘Delay’ is a term used in the cancer literature since the 1930s to describe the period between self-detection of a concerning sign of possible disease and presentation to a health professional. This linguistic choice carries an implication of blame for apparent failure to manage a risk appropriately, drawing attention away from the contemporaneous perspectives of those who respond to suspicious indicators more or less quickly. We present findings from a grounded theory study of accounts given by 45 patients about their slower or quicker journeys to a diagnosis of cutaneous malignant melanoma, a cancer which can ‘hide in plain sight’. There has been little research exploring in qualitative detail patients’ perspectives on their decision-making about what subsequently turn out to have been signs of this most risky of skin cancers. The findings frame referral time-lapses in terms of normalisation of symptoms, sometimes buttressed by reassurance derived from health promotion messages, disconfirmation of patients’ concerns by their general practitioners and prioritisation of other life concerns. We argue that a shared sense of urgency surrounding melanoma self-referral derives from a clinical representation of current knowledge which conceals numerous evidential uncertainties

    Abstract. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance of sampling and sam-ple size considerations in all qualitative research. Such considerations would help qualita-tive researchers to select sample sizes and sampling designs that are most compatible with their research purposes. First, we discuss the importance of sampling in qualitative research. Next, we outline 24 designs for selecting a sample in qualitative research. We then discuss the importance of selecting a sample size that yields data that have a realistic chance of reaching data saturation, theoretical saturation, or informational redundancy. Based on the literature, we then provide sample size guidelines for several qualitative research designs. As such, we provide a framework for making sampling and sample size considerations in inter-pretive research
