Nonequilibrium wetting of finite samples
As a canonical model for wetting far from thermal equilibrium we study a
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang interface growing on top of a hard-core substrate.
Depending on the average growth velocity the model exhibits a non-equilibrium
wetting transition which is characterized by an additional surface critical
exponent theta. Simulating the single-step model in one spatial dimension we
provide accurate numerical estimates for theta and investigate the distribution
of contact points between the substrate and the interface as a function of
time. Moreover, we study the influence of finite-size effects, in particular
the time needed until a finite substrate is completely covered by the wetting
layer for the first time.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, revisio
A theoretical model to elucidate the elusive concept ‘voice' for interpreters
This paper is an attempt to elucidate the concept of voice for interpreters in relation to the equally elusive concept pleasant voice for interpreters. The point of departure is that the concept voice for interpreting has to do with the physical properties of a speaker’s voice, which may lead to the effect that a speaker’s voice is heard as pleasant or unpleasant by a listener, depending on how a speaker uses or deploys these physical properties. The paper employs an interdisciplinary approach to reviewing relevant literature and shows that for better interpreter education and interpreting assessment, there is a need to unravel, and unify existing understandings of the concept voice. A new definition is therefore proposed. The new definition consists of a cluster of suprasegmental features resulted from supralaryngeal and laryngeal activities and incorporates in what are traditionally known as fluency features in interpreting. The paper goes on to discuss the potential benefits and implications of the newly proposed definition for both interpreter training and interpreting studies
Low-energy cross section of the 7Be(p,g)8B solar fusion reaction from Coulomb dissociation of 8B
Final results from an exclusive measurement of the Coulomb breakup of 8B into
7Be+p at 254 A MeV are reported. Energy-differential Coulomb-breakup cross
sections are analyzed using a potential model of 8B and first-order
perturbation theory. The deduced astrophysical S_17 factors are in good
agreement with the most recent direct 7Be(p,gamma)8B measurements and follow
closely the energy dependence predicted by the cluster-model description of 8B
by Descouvemont. We extract a zero-energy S_17 factor of 20.6 +- 0.8 (stat) +-
1.2 (syst) eV b.Comment: 14 pages including 16 figures, LaTeX, accepted for publication in

The HypHI project: Hypernuclear spectroscopy with stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams at GSI and FAIR
The HypHI collaboration aims to perform a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy
with stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams at GSI and fAIR in order to
study hypernuclei at extreme isospin, especially neutron rich hypernuclei to
look insight hyperon-nucleon interactions in the neutron rich medium, and
hypernuclear magnetic moments to investigate baryon properties in the nuclei.
We are currently preparing for the first experiment with Li and C
beams at 2 AGeV to demonstrate the feasibility of a precise hypernuclear
spectroscopy by identifying H, H and
He. The first physics experiment on these hypernuclei is
planned for 2009. In the present document, an overview of the HypHI project and
the details of this first experiment will be discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, French-Japanese symposium 2008, Paris (France
Extended Classical Over-Barrier Model for Collisions of Highly Charged Ions with Conducting and Insulating Surfaces
We have extended the classical over-barrier model to simulate the
neutralization dynamics of highly charged ions interacting under grazing
incidence with conducting and insulating surfaces. Our calculations are based
on simple model rates for resonant and Auger transitions. We include effects
caused by the dielectric response of the target and, for insulators, localized
surface charges. Characteristic deviations regarding the charge transfer
processes from conducting and insulating targets to the ion are discussed. We
find good agreement with previously published experimental data for the image
energy gain of a variety of highly charged ions impinging on Au, Al, LiF and KI
crystals.Comment: 32 pages http://pikp28.uni-muenster.de/~ducree
Phase-Field Formulation for Quantitative Modeling of Alloy Solidification
A phase-field formulation is introduced to simulate quantitatively
microstructural pattern formation in alloys. The thin-interface limit of this
formulation yields a much less stringent restriction on the choice of interface
thickness than previous formulations and permits to eliminate non-equilibrium
effects at the interface. Dendrite growth simulations with vanishing solid
diffusivity show that both the interface evolution and the solute profile in
the solid are well resolved
