Statistical package for social scientists - A preparatory exposition. In: Winter School on Impact of Climate Change on Indian Marine Fisheries held at CMFRI, Cochin 18.1.2008 to 7.2.2008
SPSS is a package developed originally for social scientists using large mainframe
computers. Since then it has been refined and redeveloped for different types of architecture including
Windows. It is an extensive package with facilities for data entry, data manipulation and
statistical analysis in a graphical environment. It has modules for survey analysis, graphical display and time
series. The package has been considerably improved to include logistic regression and repeated measures
analysis and much more which probably can be explored while experiencing the functionalities of the package

First report of dwarf monocle bream Parascolopsis capitinis (Teleostei: Nemipteridae) from South-west coast of India
The dwarf monocle breams of Genus Parascolopsis are bottom living small fishes generally seen in the outer shelf
and continental slope waters and are represented worldwide by 12 species. Morphometric measurements, meristic
counts and identification of the specimens follows standard methods. Parascolopsis capitinis Russell (J South Asian
Nat Hist. 2:63–6, 1996), is reported for the first time from Indian waters based on 22 specimens (192–232 mm total
length) collected from Cochin fisheries harbour in the South-west coast of India on 5 November 2012. This is the
first report of the fish from Indian waters and adds to the five species already reported from this genus from Indian
waters. Full description of the species is provided
Total factor productivity growth of trawl fishing in Kerala state, India
Trawlers are the prominent fishing units in the mechanized fishing sector of Kerala state in the south west coast of India contributing 40% of the landings. The trawl catch in the state declined from 0.27 million tonnes in 1997 to 0.21 million tonnes in 2015. Increase in fishing power of trawlers with expansion in engine, gear capacities and overall length resulted in extending fishing trips from singleday to multiday and diversification of species caught. The paper discusses the technological changes and its impacts on sustainability of trawl operations in Kerala for the period 1997 to 2015 using total factor productivity analysis.
The capacity of engines increased from 90hp to 550 hp during 1997- 2015 resulting in increased use of fuel in the fishing sector. There was fivefold increase in diesel cost and eight fold increase in ice cost in absolute terms when compared to less than two fold increase in average fish price during 1997-2015. The total factor productivity analysis revealed negative growth during 1997-2015 indicating that technological change has resulted in economic unsustainability in the production system
A note on the eight bar grouper, Hyporthodus octofasciatus (Griffin, 1926) (Pisces: Serranidae) from Indian waters
A single specimen of a serranid fish Hyporthodus octofasciatus
of length 213 mm TL was collected during a commercial trawl
operation off the South western coast of India, during March
2011 from a depth of 200 m. The present paper provides
description, morphometric and meristic features of specimen
and comparative account with earlier descriptions
Euphausiids of the west coast of India
The euphausiids (Class Crustacea: Order Euphausiacea) one of
the major components of the marine zooplankton occurring in the
EEZ of the west coast of India (eastern Arabian Sea) and collected
during the cruises of FORV Sugar Sampada during 1985-1992
period from the epipelagic zone were subjected to specieswise
study for their distribution in space and time and for their ecology
and biology. Seventeen species were encountered of which
Pseudeuphasia latifrons (at an average density of 258/lOOOm^ of
water), Euphausiia diomedeae (1,256), E. sibogae (1,437),
Nematoscelis gracilis (309), Stylocheiron armatum (230) and S.
qffine (216) were the most abundant and cosmopolitan in occurrence.
The other 17 species namely Thysanopoda monacantha, T.
tricuspidata, T. astylata, E. tenera, E. pseudogibba, Nematobrachion
flexipes, S. suhmii, S. microphthalma, S. longicorne, S. abbreviatum
and S. maximum were rather sparsely distributed and their average
number per lOOOm^ of water ranged between 10 and 151 only. The
major species exhibited marked variations in population during
different months and seasons mainly depending on the changes in
the environment
Study on the Diversity of Carangid Resources off Cochin, Kerala
The Family Carangidae includes diverse marine fishes that are ecologically and economically important species such as the jacks, scads, trevallies, pampano, amberjacks and queenfishes. Most are either deep bodied neretic bottom feeders or more slender neretic planktivores. A few
species such as the rainbow runner and pilot fish are pelagic, typically found in the open ocean. Carangids are found in all tropical and subtropical marine waters of the world, and some occur In temperate regions. In India.,
fishes of the Family Carangidae are widely distributed along both coasts of India
