    Endocrine correlates of male breast cancer risk: a case-control study in Athens, Greece

    We studied the relation of certain endocrine-related variables among 23 cases of male breast cancer and 76 apparently healthy male controls. There were significant inverse associations with smoking (P = 0.03), birth order (P = 0.02) and reported frequency of orgasms in later life (P = 0.0004). The study provides strong indirect evidence that endocrine factors are important in the aetiology of male breast cancer. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

    Model ab initio study of charge carrier solvation and large polaron formation on conjugated carbon chains

    Using long C_{N}H_{2} conjugated carbon chains with the polyynic structure as prototypical examples of one-dimensional (1D) semiconductors, we discuss self-localization of excess charge carriers into 1D large polarons in the presence of the interaction with a surrounding polar solvent. The solvation mechanism of self-trapping is different from the polaron formation due to coupling with bond-length modulations of the underlying atomic lattice well-known in conjugated polymers. Model ab initio computations employing the hybrid B3LYP density functional in conjunction with the polarizable continuum model are carried out demonstrating the formation of both electron- and hole-polarons. Polarons can emerge entirely due to solvation but even larger degrees of charge localization occur when accompanied by atomic displacements

    Absence of Meissner State and Robust Ferromagnetism in the Superconducting State of UCoGe: Possible Evidence of Spontaneous Vortex State

    We report ac magnetic susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements on the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe (with superconducting and Curie temperatures of TSC∼0.5T_{{\rm SC}} \sim 0.5~K and TCurie∼2.5T_{{\rm Curie}} \sim 2.5~K, respectively). In the normal, ferromagnetic state (TSC<T<TCurieT_{{\rm SC}} < T < T_{{\rm Curie}}), the magnetization curve exhibits a hysteresis loop similar to that of a regular itinerant ferromagnet. Upon lowering the temperature below TSCT_{{\rm SC}}, the spontaneous magnetization is unchanged, but the hysteresis is markedly enhanced. Even deeply inside the superconducting state, ferromagnetism is not completely shielded, and there is no Meissner region, a magnetic field region of H<Hc1H < H_{\rm c1} (a lower critical field). From these results, we suggest that UCoGe is the first material in which ferromagnetism robustly survives in the superconducting state and a spontaneous vortex state without the Meissner state is realized.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in J.     Primary follicular and marginal-zone lymphoma of the breast: clinical features, prognostic factors and outcome: a study by the International Extranodal Lymphoma Study Group

    Background: Primary breast lymphoma (PBL) of low-grade histology is a rare disease. This multicentric retrospective study was carried out to determine clinical features, prognosis and relapse. Patients and methods: Patients with histologically proven, previously untreated follicular or marginal-zone PBL (MZL PBL) diagnosed from 1980 to 2003 were included in the study. Major end points were progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and potential prognostic factors. Results: We collected data on 60 cases of PBL [36 follicular and 24 marginal-zone lymphoma (MZL)]. Stage was IE or IIE in 57 patients and IVE in three patients due to bilateral breast involvement. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy (RT), alone or in combination, were used as first-line treatments in 67%, 42% and 52% of patients, respectively. Overall response rate was 98%, with a 93% complete response rate. Five-year PFS were 56% for MZL and 49% for follicular PBL (P = 0.62). Relapses were mostly in distant sites (18 of 23 cases); no patients relapsed within RT fields. Conclusions: Our data showed an indolent behaviour of MZL PBL, comparable to other primary extranodal MZL. Conversely, patients with follicular PBL had inferior PFS and OS when compared with limited-stage nodal follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, suggesting an adverse prognostic role of primary breast localisation in this histological subgrou

    Part of a wider examination into football during the collapse of Eastern European Communism between 1989 and 1991, this article studies the interplay between Serbian football and politics during the period of Yugoslavia's demise. Research utilizing interviews with individuals directly involved in the Serbian game, in conjunction with contemporary Yugoslav media sources, indicates that football played an important proactive role in the revival of Serbian nationalism. At the same time the Yugoslav conflict, twinned with a complex transition to a market economy, had disastrous consequences for football throughout the territories of the former Yugoslavia. In the years following the hostilities the Serbian game has suffered decline, major financial hardship and continuing terrace violence, resulting in widespread nostalgia for the pre-conflict era

    What is Donald Trump?:Forms of 'Celebrity' in Celebrity Politics

    It is widely assumed that Donald Trump is a ‘celebrity politician’, and that he has cashed in his success on the reality show The Apprentice to secure political credibility and attention. In this respect he fits what Matthew Wood et al (2016) have labelled the ‘superstar celebrity politician’. This characterisation is the latest in a number of refinements to the definition and understanding of the celebrity politician. While this is a helpful move, I want to suggest that it might overlook one key dimension of the phenomenon. Definitions of the celebrity politician tend to focus on the source of their ‘celebrity’ – how they became famous, rather than on how they act out their celebrity role. This latter dimension features in media coverage, where journalists and commentators borrow from showbusiness to describe politics, but is less often analysed in the political science literature. It matters because, I want to suggest, celebrity politicians like Trump act as stars, whether of reality television, rock music or film. They do not just resemble stars; they are them. This is evident in how they are represented, how they perform and how their ‘fans’ respond to them. It is also symptomatic of wider changes in the conduct and form of the contemporary, mediatised political realm

    OmoMYC blunts promoter invasion by oncogenic MYC to inhibit gene expression characteristic of MYC-dependent tumors.

    MYC genes have both essential roles during normal development and exert oncogenic functions during tumorigenesis. Expression of a dominant-negative allele of MYC, termed OmoMYC, can induce rapid tumor regression in mouse models with little toxicity for normal tissues. How OmoMYC discriminates between physiological and oncogenic functions of MYC is unclear. We have solved the crystal structure of OmoMYC and show that it forms a stable homodimer and as such recognizes DNA in the same manner as the MYC/MAX heterodimer. OmoMYC attenuates both MYC-dependent activation and repression by competing with MYC/MAX for binding to chromatin, effectively lowering MYC/MAX occupancy at its cognate binding sites. OmoMYC causes the largest decreases in promoter occupancy and changes in expression on genes that are invaded by oncogenic MYC levels. A signature of OmoMYC-regulated genes defines subgroups with high MYC levels in multiple tumor entities and identifies novel targets for the eradication of MYC-driven tumors

    The SXS Collaboration catalog of binary black hole simulations

    Accurate models of gravitational waves from merging black holes are necessary for detectors to observe as many events as possible while extracting the maximum science. Near the time of merger, the gravitational waves from merging black holes can be computed only using numerical relativity. In this paper, we present a major update of the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes (SXS) Collaboration catalog of numerical simulations for merging black holes. The catalog contains 2018 distinct configurations (a factor of 11 increase compared to the 2013 SXS catalog), including 1426 spin-precessing configurations, with mass ratios between 1 and 10, and spin magnitudes up to 0.998. The median length of a waveform in the catalog is 39 cycles of the dominant ℓ=m=2\ell=m=2 gravitational-wave mode, with the shortest waveform containing 7.0 cycles and the longest 351.3 cycles. We discuss improvements such as correcting for moving centers of mass and extended coverage of the parameter space. We also present a thorough analysis of numerical errors, finding typical truncation errors corresponding to a waveform mismatch of ∼10−4\sim 10^{-4}. The simulations provide remnant masses and spins with uncertainties of 0.03% and 0.1% (90th90^{\text{th}} percentile), about an order of magnitude better than analytical models for remnant properties.
