Some New Results on Charged Compact Boson Stars
In this work we present some new results obtained in a study of the phase
diagram of charged compact boson stars in a theory involving a complex scalar
field with a conical potential coupled to a U(1) gauge field and gravity. We
here obtain new bifurcation points in this model. We present a detailed
discussion of the various regions of the phase diagram with respect to the
bifurcation points. The theory is seen to contain rich physics in a particular
domain of the phase diagram.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figure
FUNCTIONAL FORM SPECIFICATION IN THE QUARTERLY DEMAND FOR RED MEATS IN CANADA
Most demand studies, particularly those for food products, choose somewhat arbitrarily either a linear or a log-linear functional form. Since choice of functional form has implications for elasticities and their properties over time, either form may be considered restrictive. An empirical test of functional form in the short-run (quarterly) demand for four red meats is presented in this paper. For beef demand, neither a linear nor a log-linear form is appropriate. Similarly for pork and lamb demand, a linear functional form is not appropriate, but the log-linear one is. For veal demand, although data supported both function forms, a linear form is preferred when seasonal influences are accounted for.Demand and Price Analysis, Livestock Production/Industries,
Hamiltonian, Path Integral and BRST Formulations of Large N Scalar on the Light-Front and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking
Recently Grinstein, Jora, and Polosa have studied a theory of large-
scalar quantum chromodynamics in one-space one-time dimension. This theory
admits a Bethe-Salpeter equation describing the discrete spectrum of
quark-antiquark bound states. They consider gauge fields in the adjoint
representation of and scalar fields in the fundamental representation.
The theory is asymptotically free and linearly confining. The theory could
possibly provide a good field theoretic framework for the description of a
large class of diquark-antidiquark (tetra-quark) states. Recently we have
studied the light-front quantization of this theory without a Higgs potential.
In the present work, we study the light-front Hamiltonian, path integral and
BRST formulations of the theory in the presence of a Higgs potential. The
light-front theory is seen to be gauge-invariant, possessing a set of
first-class constraints. The explicit occurrence of spontaneous symmetry
breaking in the theory is shown in unitary gauge as well as in the light-front
't Hooft gauge.Comment: Accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.
Business Ethics versus Economic Incentives: Contemporary Issues and Dilemmas
This paper is based on my experience with teaching a course on ethical dilemmas faced by individuals, managers and businesses in contemporary societies. Modern economic thinking generally presumes that individuals and businesses in a society follow their own self-interest, or private economic incentives. The course highlighted the importance of ethical considerations for action that are based on consideration of others rather than ones own. Four significant ethical dilemmas of modern societies, concerning Crime Reduction and Legalization of Drugs, Saving the Earths Environment, Abortion and Ethics in Business were chosen for class discussion. The readings on ethics in business covered views by management experts such as Peter F. Drucker and David Vogel on the meaning, relevance and evolution of business ethics in modern societies. The pedagogy of the course consisted of lectures and group discussions, during which relevant ethical issues were analyzed by using real-world examples and cases. In a rapidly globalizing economy, Indian managers are likely to confront complex ethical concerns. Therefore, Indian managers need to acquire a deeper knowledge and understanding of ethics in business. A course on business ethics in India should aim to enhance students understanding of ethical behavior, keeping in view the globalization process that is influencing the functioning of Indian firms today.
