Assimilation via prices or quantities? Sources of immigrant earnings growth in Australia, Canada and the United States
Using 1980/81 and 1990/91 census data from Australia, Canada, and the United States, we
estimate the effects of time in the destination country on male immigrants’ wages,
employment, and earnings. We find that total earnings assimilation is greatest in the United
States and least in Australia. Employment assimilation explains all of the earnings progress
experienced by Australian immigrants, whereas wage assimilation plays the dominant role in
the United States, and Canada falls in-between. We argue that relatively inflexible wages and
generous unemployment insurance in countries like Australia may cause assimilation to occur
along the “quantity” rather than the price dimension
Measurement of sigma_Total in e+e- Annihilations Below 10.56 GeV
Using the CLEO III detector, we measure absolute cross sections for e+e- ->
hadrons at seven center-of-mass energies between 6.964 and 10.538 GeV. R, the
ratio of hadronic and muon pair production cross sections, is measured at these
energies with a r.m.s. error <2% allowing determinations of the strong coupling
alpha_s. Using the expected evolution of alpha_s with energy we find
alpha_s(M_Z^2)=0.126 +/- 0.005 ^{+0.015}_{-0.011}, and
Lambda=0.31^{+0.09+0.29}_{-0.08-0.21}.Comment: Comments: Presented at "The 2007 Europhysics Conference on High

Flexible Polyelectrolytes with Monovalent Salt
We present a model for describing flexible polyelectrolytes in a good solvent
a nd in the presence of monovalent salt . The molecule composed by monomers
is characterized by the end to end distanc e and the
number of associated counterions . At high tem peratures the polyelectrolyte
behaves as a neutral polymer (). Dec reasing the temperature, the
macromolecule changes from this extended configurat ion() to a
stretched form (). At even lower temp eratures, above the
Manning condensation threshold, the polyelectrolyte collapse s (). Our results show good agreement with simulations
Spin Structure of the Nucleon - Status and Recent Results
After the initial discovery of the so-called "spin crisis in the parton
model" in the 1980's, a large set of polarization data in deep inelastic
lepton-nucleon scattering was collected at labs like SLAC, DESY and CERN. More
recently, new high precision data at large x and in the resonance region have
come from experiments at Jefferson Lab. These data, in combination with the
earlier ones, allow us to study in detail the polarized parton densities, the
Q^2 dependence of various moments of spin structure functions, the duality
between deep inelastic and resonance data, and the nucleon structure in the
valence quark region. Together with complementary data from HERMES, RHIC and
COMPASS, we can put new limits on the flavor decomposition and the gluon
contribution to the nucleon spin. In this report, we provide an overview of our
present knowledge of the nucleon spin structure and give an outlook on future
experiments. We focus in particular on the spin structure functions g_1 and g_2

Optimum pulse shapes for stimulated Raman adiabatic passage
Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), driven with pulses of optimum
shape and delay has the potential of reaching fidelities high enough to make it
suitable for fault-tolerant quantum information processing. The optimum pulse
shapes are obtained upon reduction of STIRAP to effective two-state systems. We
use the Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas (DDP) method to minimize nonadiabatic transitions
and to maximize the fidelity of STIRAP. This results in a particular relation
between the pulse shapes of the two fields driving the Raman process. The
DDP-optimized version of STIRAP maintains its robustness against variations in
the pulse intensities and durations, the single-photon detuning and possible

Rod-like Polyelectrolytes in Presence of Monovalent Salt
We investigate the properties of rigid polyelectrolyte solutions in presence
of monovalent salt. The free energy within the Debye-H\"uckel-Bjerrum (DHBj)
theory [M. E.
Fisher and Y. Levin, {\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} 71, 3826 (1993)] is constructed.
It is found that at thermodynamic equilibrium the polyelectrolyte solution
consists of clusters composed of one polyion and various counterions. The
distribution of the cluster densities is determined by finding the minimum of
the Helmholtz free energy. The osmotic pressure and the average charge of the
cluster are found and their dependence on Manning parameter is
elucidated. A good agreement with the experimental results is obtained.Comment: 11 pages, Revtex (using twocolumn style), 15 figures and postscript
