Recent Load Calibrations Experience with the YF-12 Airplane
The use of calibrated strain gages to measure wing loads on the YF-12A airplane is discussed as well as structural configurations relative to the thermal environment and resulting thermal stresses. A thermal calibration of the YF-12A is described to illustrate how contaminating thermal effects can be removed from loads equations. The relationship between ground load calibrations and flight measurements is examined for possible errors, and an analytical approach to accommodate such errors is presented
Environmental protection and economic growth
This paper explores the link between environmental policy and economic growth by employing an extension of the AK Growth Model. We include a state equation for renewable natural resources. We assume that the change in environmental regulations induces costs and that economic agents also derive some utility from capital stock accumulation vis-`a-vis the environment. Using the Hopf bifurcation theorem, we show that cyclical environmental policy strategies are optimal, providing theoretical support for the Environmental Kuznets Curve.
A study of the effect of radical load distributions on calibrated strain gage load equations
For several decades, calibrated strain gages have been used to measure loads on airplanes. The accuracy of the equations used to relate the strain gage measurements to the applied loads has been based primarily on the results of the load calibration. An approach is presented for studying the effect of widely varying load distributions on strain gage load equations. The computational procedure provides a link between the load calibration and the load to be measured in flight. A matrix approach to equation selection is presented, which is based on equation standard error, load distribution, and influence coefficient plots of the strain gage equations, and is applied to a complex, delta-wing structure
Experimental observation of the mobility edge in a waveguide with correlated disorder
The tight-binding model with correlated disorder introduced by Izrailev and
Krokhin [PRL 82, 4062 (1999)] has been extended to the Kronig-Penney model. The
results of the calculations have been compared with microwave transmission
spectra through a single-mode waveguide with inserted correlated scatterers.
All predicted bands and mobility edges have been found in the experiment, thus
demonstrating that any wanted combination of transparent and non-transparent
frequency intervals can be realized experimentally by introducing appropriate

Enhancement of localization in one-dimensional random potentials with long-range correlations
We experimentally study the effect of enhancement of localization in weak
one-dimensional random potentials. Our experimental setup is a single mode
waveguide with 100 tuneable scatterers periodically inserted into the
waveguide. By measuring the amplitudes of transmitted and reflected waves in
the spacing between each pair of scatterers, we observe a strong decrease of
the localization length when white-noise scatterers are replaced by a
correlated arrangement of scatterers.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
The use of a simplified structural model as an aid in the strain gage calibration of a complex wing
The use of a relatively simple structural model to characterize the load responses of strain gages located on various spars of a delta wing is examined. Strains measured during a laboratory load calibration of a wing structure are compared with calculations obtained from a simplified structural analysis model. Calculated and measured influence coefficient plots that show the shear, bending, and torsion characteristics of typical strain gage bridges are presented. Typical influence coefficient plots are shown for several load equations to illustrate the derivation of the equations from the component strain gage bridges. A relatively simple structural model was found to be effective in predicting the general nature of strain distributions and influence coefficient plots. The analytical processes are shown to be an aid in obtaining a good load calibration. The analytical processes cannot, however, be used in lieu of an actual load calibration of an aircraft wing
Microphytobenthic extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in intertidal sediments fuel both generalist and specialist EPS-degrading bacteria
Microphytobenthic biofilms contain high concentrations of carbohydrate-rich extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that are important in sediment carbon cycling. Field measurements at two locations in the Colne Estuary, U.K., showed that a significant curvilinear relationship explained 50% of the variability in chlorophyll a and EPS content. Estimates of EPS production, based on field data and published rates of production by diatoms, revealed that EPS turnover of 52% to 369% over the tidal cycle was required to account for field standing stocks. We investigated EPS degradation in sediment slurries using purified 13C-EPS produced by the diatom Nitzschia tubicola. Although EPS constituted only 5% of the sediment dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool, 100% of the added EPS was utilized within 30 h, before decreases in other sediment-carbohydrate fractions and DOC concentrations. A general 13C enrichment of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), representative of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, occurred within 6 h, with the PLFAs a15:0, i15:0, and 18:1?7c being highly enriched. The diatom PLFA 20:5?3 had relatively low but significant 13C enrichment. Stable isotope probing of 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (RNA-SIP) at 30 h revealed 13C-enriched sequences from the diatom genus Navicula; further evidence that diatoms assimilated the EPS, or EPS-breakdown products, from other diatom taxa. RNA-SIP also demonstrated a diverse range of highly 13C-enriched bacterial taxa, including a distinct subset (Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria) found only in the heavily labeled microbial assemblages. Thus, cycling of diatom EPS is rapid, and involves a wide range of microbial taxa, including some apparent specialists
