Brief Note The 1987 Emergence of the Periodical Cicada (Homoptera: Cicadidae: Magicicada spp.: Brood X) in Ohio
Author Institution: Department of Biology, College of Mount St. JosephBrood X of the periodical cicadas emerged in parts of western Ohio during late May and June, 1987. Periodical cicadas were reported in 26 counties in western Ohio, including three new county records. The 1987 distribution was compared to the historical record of periodical cicadas in Ohio, revealing that the distribution of Brood X has been greatly reduced in the last century and that 12 counties have witnessed 4-year accelerations of the 17-year life cycle
Brief Note: The 1991 Emergence of the Periodical Cicadas (Homoptera: Cicadidae: Magicicada spp.: Brood XIV) in Ohio
Author Institution: Department of Biology, College of Mount St. JosephPeriodical cicadas of the 17-year brood XIV emerged in parts of southern Ohio in 1991. The emergence was heaviest in extreme southern Ohio where eastern Hamilton, Clermont, Brown, Adams, Scioto, Lawrence, Highland, and Ross counties reported the heaviest populations. Lighter and scattered emergences were reported in Champaign, eastern Butler, southern Warren, Clinton, Fayette, Greene, Pike, Jackson, Gallia, and Washington counties. The distribution of brood XTV in Ohio has remained relatively constant during the past two centuries
Aging Management in the Design of Nuclear Power Plants
The basic design includes: physical calculations; thermohydraulic calculations; designbasis justification of equipment strength. System-oriented and construction-oriented approaches are used during design and engineering to ensure the reliability of systems. System-oriented approaches include: analysis of prototypes; creation of systems with the minimum necessary number of components, use of redundancy, development of systems that do not allow the dangerous impacts of failure on their components (fail-safe design), optimization of the sequence of systemsβ element operation, preliminary calculations of the system under development reliability. This takes into account: R&D results; reference data from other nuclear facilities; aging materials and mechanisms. Aging management program is created during design and operation of a nuclear facility
Brief Note: The Unexpected 1995 Emergence of Periodical Cicadas (Homoptera: Cicadidae: Magicicada spp.) in Ohio
Author Institution: Department of Biology, College of Mount St. Joseph ; Department of Biological Sciences, Ohio UniversityOhio witnessed an unexpected emergence of periodical cicadas in 1995. The largest emergence occurred in Athens County where hundreds of cicadas emerged on 24 May 1995. Gallia County witnessed the emergence of less than fifty periodical cicadas and smaller emergences of only a few individuals were reported in Adams, Clermont, Hamilton, Highland, Hocking, and Washington counties. Athens and Gallia counties have Brood V cicadas which are expected to emerge in 1999, suggesting that this year's cicada emergence was a four-year acceleration of Brood V. The other counties were sites of Brood XIV emergences in 1991 and these may be cicadas emerging four years late

News from the archivesThis material briefly reproduces the main content of the article by Alexander Kritsky in the Β«Railway BusinessΒ» journal in 1891 and 1892. The very fact of a multi-issue and very voluminous publication shows how much attention was paid at one time to the issue of air purity in railway passenger cars. The original punctuation, vocabulary and abbreviations adopted at that time are preserved in the text as much as possible.ΠΡΠ΅ΡΡ-Π°ΡΡ

Monogenoidean parasites of fishes associated with coral reefs in the Ras Mohammed National Park, Egypt: preliminary results
AbstractA parasitological survey of the monogenoids of 14 species of common fishes associated with the local coral reefs of the Ras Mohammed National Park, National Parks of Egypt South Sinai Sector, Egypt, was carried out from May 2003 to May 2005. The monogenoids collected during the survey included 17 species: 8 previously described species, 7 new species in established genera, and 2 new species belonging to new genera

Morphological conservatism in the foreleg structure of cicada hatchlings, Novicicada burmanica n. gen., n. sp. in Burmese amber, N. youngi n. gen., n. sp. in Dominican amber and the extant Magicicada septendecim (Fisher) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae)
Two new species of cicada hatchlings in Burmese and Dominican amber are described as Novicicada burmanica n. gen., n. sp. and N. youngi n. gen., n. sp. in the new collective genus Novicicada n. gen. (Hemiptera: Cicadidae). Diagnostic characters of the new genus are an elongate, flattened body, all antennomeres of subequal width, elongate procoxae, enlarged profemurs with spurs and spines, foretibiae with spurs and spines and the foretarsi subapically attached to the foretibiae. A comparison of the forelegs of the fossil hatchlings with an extant hatchling of the periodical cicada, Magicicada septendecim (Fisher) reveals a remarkable degree of morphological conservatism over 100 million years. A brief review of fossil cicadas is presented. Keywords: Dominican amber, Morphological conservatism, Novicicada n. gen., Periodical cicada, Magicicada septendecim, Burmese amber, Cicada hatchlingsKeywords: Dominican amber, Morphological conservatism, Novicicada n. gen., Periodical cicada, Magicicada septendecim, Burmese amber, Cicada hatchling
