Continuity, Deconfinement, and (Super) Yang-Mills Theory
We study the phase diagram of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with one adjoint Weyl
fermion on R^3xS^1 as a function of the fermion mass m and the compactification
scale L. This theory reduces to thermal pure gauge theory as m->infinity and to
circle-compactified (non-thermal) supersymmetric gluodynamics in the limit
m->0. In the m-L plane, there is a line of center symmetry changing phase
transitions. In the limit m->infinity, this transition takes place at
L_c=1/T_c, where T_c is the critical temperature of the deconfinement
transition in pure Yang-Mills theory. We show that near m=0, the critical
compactification scale L_c can be computed using semi-classical methods and
that the transition is of second order. This suggests that the deconfining
phase transition in pure Yang-Mills theory is continuously connected to a
transition that can be studied at weak coupling. The center symmetry changing
phase transition arises from the competition of perturbative contributions and
monopole-instantons that destabilize the center, and topological molecules
(neutral bions) that stabilize the center. The contribution of molecules can be
computed using supersymmetry in the limit m=0, and via the
Bogomolnyi--Zinn-Justin (BZJ) prescription in the non-supersymmetric gauge
theory. Finally, we also give a detailed discussion of an issue that has not
received proper attention in the context of N=1 theories---the non-cancellation
of nonzero-mode determinants around supersymmetric BPS and KK
monopole-instanton backgrounds on R^3xS^1. We explain why the non-cancellation
is required for consistency with holomorphy and supersymmetry and perform an
explicit calculation of the one-loop determinant ratio.Comment: A discussion of the non-cancellation of the nonzero mode determinants
around supersymmetric monopole-instantons in N=1 SYM on R^3xS^1 is added,
including an explicit calculation. The non-cancellation is, in fact, required
by supersymmetry and holomorphy in order for the affine-Toda superpotential
to be reproduced. References have also been adde
Functional Polymorphisms in IL13 Are Protective against High Schistosoma mansoni Infection Intensity in a Brazilian Population
IL-13 is a signature cytokine of the helper T cell type 2 (TH2) pathway which underlies host defense to helminthic infection and activates production of IgE in both parasitized populations and in urban settings after allergen exposure. Two functional polymorphisms in IL13, rs1800925 (or c.1-1111C>T) and rs20541 (or R130Q) were previously found to be associated with Schistosoma hematobium infection intensity. They have not been thoroughly explored in S. mansoni-endemic populations, however, and were selected along with 5 tagging SNPs for genotyping in 812 individuals in 318 nuclear families from a schistosomiasis-endemic area of Conde, Bahia, in Brazil. Regression models using GEE to account for family membership and family-based quantitative transmission disequilibrium tests (QTDT) were used to evaluate associations with total serum IgE (tIgE) levels and S. mansoni fecal egg counts adjusted for non-genetic covariates. We identified a protective effect for the T allele at rs20541 (P = 0.005) against high S. mansoni egg counts, corroborated by QTDT (P = 0.014). Our findings also suggested evidence for protective effects for the T allele at rs1800925 and A allele at rs2066960 after GEE analysis only (P = 0.050, 0.0002).The two functional variants in IL13 are protective against high S. mansoni egg counts. These markers showed no evidence of association with tIgE levels, unlike tIgE levels previously studied in non-parasitized or atopic study populations
Search for New Physics in Lepton + Photon + X Events with L=305 pb-1 of ppbar Collisions at roots=1.96 TeV
We present results of a search for anomalous production of events containing
a charged lepton (either electron or muon) and a photon, both with high
transverse momentum, accompanied by additional signatures, X, including missing
transverse energy (MET) and additional leptons and photons. We use the same
kinematic selection criteria as in a previous CDF search, but with a
substantially larger data set, 305 pb-1, a ppbar collision energy of 1.96 TeV,
and the upgraded CDF II detector. We find 42 Lepton+Photon+MET events versus a
standard model expectation of 37.3 +- 5.4 events. The level of excess observed
in Run I, 16 events with an expectation of 7.6 +- 0.7 events (corresponding to
a 2.7 sigma effect), is not supported by the new data. In the signature of
Multi-Lepton+Photon+X we observe 31 events versus an expectation of 23.0 +- 2.7
events. In this sample we find no events with an extra photon or MET and so
find no events like the one ee+gg+MET event observed in Run I.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Accepted to PR
Top Quark Mass Measurement from Dilepton Events at CDF II with the Matrix-Element Method
We describe a measurement of the top quark mass using events with two charged
leptons collected by the CDF II detector from collisions with TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The likelihood in top mass is
calculated for each event by convoluting the leading order matrix element
describing
with detector resolution functions. The presence of background events in the
data sample is modeled using similar calculations involving the matrix elements
for major background processes. In a data sample with integrated luminosity of
340 pb, we observe 33 candidate events and measure This
measurement represents the first application of this method to events with two
charged leptons and is the most precise single measurement of the top quark
mass in this channel.Comment: 21 pages, 14 figure
Measurement of the Top-Quark Mass in All-Hadronic Decays in p pbar Collisions at CDF II
We present a measurement of the top-quark mass, , in the
all-hadronic decay channel . The analysis is performed using 310 pb of
=1.96 TeV collisions collected with the CDF II detector
using a multi-jet trigger. The mass measurement is based on an event-by-event
likelihood which depends on both the sample purity and the value of the
top-quark mass, using 90 possible jet-to-parton assignments in the six-jet
final state. The joint likelihood of 290 selected events yields a value of
=177.1 4.9 (stat.) 4.7 (syst.) GeV/.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures and 1 table, Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Limits on Anomalous Triple Gauge Couplings in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings (ATGC) in WW and WZ
boson production. The boson pairs are produced in ppbar collisions at
sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, and the data sample corresponds to 350 pb-1 of integrated
luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In this
search one W decays to leptons, and the other boson (W or Z) decays
hadronically. Combining with a previously published CDF measurement of Wgamma
boson production yields ATGC limits of -0.18 < lambda < 0.17 and -0.46 < Delta
kappa < 0.39 at the 95% confidence level, using a cut-off scale Lambda=1.5 TeV.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Analysis of the Quantum Numbers of the X(3872) Particle
We present an analysis of angular distributions and correlations of the
X(3872) particle in the exclusive decay mode X(3872)->J/psi pi+ pi- with
J/psi->mu+ mu-. We use 780 pb -1 of data from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} =
1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We derive
constraints on spin, parity, and charge conjugation parity of the X(3872)
particle by comparing measured angular distributions of the decay products with
predictions for different JPC hypotheses. The assignments JPC = 1++ and 2-+ are
the only ones consistent with the data.Comment: update to journal versio
Precision measurement of the top quark mass from dilepton events at CDF II
We report a measurement of the top quark mass, M_t, in the dilepton decay
channel of
using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1} of p\bar{p} collisions collected
with the CDF II detector. We apply a method that convolutes a leading-order
matrix element with detector resolution functions to form event-by-event
likelihoods; we have enhanced the leading-order description to describe the
effects of initial-state radiation. The joint likelihood is the product of the
likelihoods from 78 candidate events in this sample, which yields a measurement
of M_{t} = 164.5 \pm 3.9(\textrm{stat.}) \pm 3.9(\textrm{syst.})
\mathrm{GeV}/c^2, the most precise measurement of M_t in the dilepton channel.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, version includes changes made prior to

Cross Section Measurements of High- Dilepton Final-State Processes Using a Global Fitting Method
We present a new method for studying high- dilepton events
(, , ) and simultaneously
extracting the production cross sections of , , and p\bar{p} \to \ztt at a center-of-mass energy of TeV. We perform a likelihood fit to the dilepton data in a parameter
space defined by the missing transverse energy and the number of jets in the
event. Our results, which use of data recorded with the CDF
II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, are pb, pb, and
\sigma(\ztt) =291^{+50}_{-46} pb.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures, to be submitted to PRD-R
Measurement of the Lambda_b Lifetime in Lambda_b --> J/psi Lambda0 in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
We report a measurement of the Lambda_b lifetime in the exclusive decay
Lambda_b --> J/psi Lambda0 in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV using an
integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1} of data collected by the CDF II detector
at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using fully reconstructed decays, we measure
tau(Lambda_b) = 1.593 ^{+0.083}_{-0.078} (stat.) +- 0.033 (syst.) ps. This is
the single most precise measurement of tau(Lambda_b) and is 3.2 sigma higher
than the current world average.Comment: 7 Pages, 2 Figures, 1 Table. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
