    The Transkeian government plans to build a port at the mouth of the Mngazana river. This new port will be controlled and operated by the government and will handle both imports and exports. It has also been announced that this harbour will be a free port. In this article the author points out why Port St John's was not chosen. The terms free port and free zone are explained, while the whole situation is evaluated

    In this article it becomes evident that the boundaries of Southwest Africa and especially the Northern and Caprivi boundaries are arbitrary and artificial. Human decision-making, although many years ago, created this unnatural situation whereby people speaking the same language and often engaging in the same economic activities, were separated from each other. Separations where economical, ethnic and linguistic factors are not taken into account, occur worldwide and is not a problem restricted to the boundaries of Africa.</p

    Economic co-operation between countries in Southern Africa is essential. In the past the Republic of South Africa has participated ,in various projects ,involving neighbouring countries. In this way economic growth was promoted in those countries which were willing to co-operate whilst South Africa herself expected to der,ive benefit from the different schemes. This was the case with the Cunene and Cabora Bassa Sohemes which were launched by the South African and Portugeuse Governments in 1962-64 and 1969 respectively. The political situation has changed radically sinnce Angola and Mocambique gained their independence in 1974. Are South Africa and South West Africa going to lose all the expected advantages? How precarious is the f.ituation? The writer sketches the background and tries to give an objective opinion
