    A monolithic, GaAs, dual mode, quadrature amplitude shift keying and quadrature phase shift keying transceiver with one and two billion bits per second data rate is being considered to achieve a low power, small and ultra high speed communication system for satellite as well as terrestrial purposes. Recent GaAs integrated circuit achievements are surveyed and their constituent device types are evaluated. Design considerations, on an elemental level, of the entire modem are further included for monolithic realization with practical fabrication techniques. Numerous device types, with practical monolithic compatability, are used in the design of functional blocks with sufficient performances for realization of the transceiver

    Advanced digital modulation: Communication techniques and monolithic GaAs technology

    Communications theory and practice are merged with state-of-the-art technology in IC fabrication, especially monolithic GaAs technology, to examine the general feasibility of a number of advanced technology digital transmission systems. Satellite-channel models with (1) superior throughput, perhaps 2 Gbps; (2) attractive weight and cost; and (3) high RF power and spectrum efficiency are discussed. Transmission techniques possessing reasonably simple architectures capable of monolithic fabrication at high speeds were surveyed.     INVESTIGATION ON THE USE OF NeRF FOR HERITAGE 3D DENSE RECONSTRUCTION FOR INTERIOR SPACES

    The concept of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) emerged in recent years as a method to create novel synthetic 3D viewpoints from a set of trained images. While it has several overlaps with conventional photogrammetry and especially multi-view stereo (MVS), its main point of interest is the capability to rapidly recreate objects in 3D. In this paper, we investigate the quality of point clouds generated by state-of-the-art NeRF in the context of interior spaces and compare them to four conventional MVS algorithms, of which two are commercial (Agisoft Metashape and Pix4D) and the other two open source (Patch-Match and Semi-Global Matching). Three synthetic datasets of interior scenes were created from laser scanning data with different characteristics and architectural elements. Results show that NeRF point clouds could achieve satisfactory results geometrically speaking, with an average standard deviation of 1.7 cm in interior cases where the scene dimension is roughly 25–50 m3 in volume. However, the level of noise on the point cloud, which was considered as out of tolerance, ranges between 17–42%, meaning that the level of detail and finesse is most likely insufficient for sophisticated heritage documentation purposes, even though from a visualisation point of view the results were better. However, NeRF did show the capability to reconstruct texture less and reflective surfaces where MVS failed

    Long-Lasting Effect of Infant Rats Endotoxemia on Heat Shock Protein 60 in the Pancreatic Acinar Cells: Involvement of Toll-Like Receptor 4

    Introduction. Lipopolysaccharide endotoxin (LPS) is responsible for septic shock and multiorgan failure, but pretreatment of rats with low doses of LPS reduced pancreatic acute damage. Aim. We investigated the effects of the endotoxemia induced in the early period of life on Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) and proapoptotic Bax, caspase-9 and -3 or antiapoptotic Bcl-2 protein expression in the pancreatic acinar cells of adult animals. Material and Methods. Newborn rats (25 g) were injected with endotoxin (Escherichia coli) for 5 consecutive days. Two months later, pancreatic acinar cells were isolated from all groups of animals and subjected to caerulein stimulation (10−8 M). Protein expression was assessed employing Western blot. For detection of apoptosis we have employed DNA fragmentation ladder assay. Results. Preconditioning of newborn rats with LPS increased TLR4, Caspase-9 and -3 levels, but failed to affect basal expression of HSP60, Bax, and Bcl-2. Subsequent caerulein stimulation increased TLR4, Bcl-2, and caspases, but diminished HSP60 and Bax proteins in pancreatic acinar cells. Endotoxemia dose-dependently increased TLR4, Bax, HSP60, and both caspases protein signals in the pancreatic acini, further inhibiting antiapoptotic Bcl-2. Conclusions. Endotoxemia promoted the induction of HSP60 via TLR4 in the infant rats and participated in the LPS-dependent pancreatic tissue protection against acute damage

    NiW/ZrO2Ni-W/ZrO_2 nanocomposites obtained by ultrasonic DC electrodeposition

    Composite coatings consisting of a nanocrystalline Ni–W alloy matrix reinforced with ZrO2 particles (average size of 50 nm) were synthesized by electrochemical deposition assisted by an external ultrasonic field. The Ni–W/ZrO2 coatings were deposited from aqueous sulphate–citrate electrolytes containing zirconia nanopowder in suspension on steel substrates in a system with a rotating disk electrode (RDE). The influence of relevant processing parameters (i.e., concentration of zirconia powder in plating bath, current density, hydrodynamic conditions, ultrasonic field frequency) on the composite characteristics was discussed. Based on micromechanical (microhardness, Young’s modulus) and microstructural (morphology, phase composition, crystallite size) properties of the coatings, the conditions for electrodeposition of crack-free, homogeneous Ni–W/ZrO2 nanocomposites with enhanced functional properties have been developed

    In this paper, the feasibility of using electromagnetic (EM) waves is determining the moisture content of building fabrics and the case of water ingress in experimentally assessed. This paper will concentrate on investigating the propagation of EM waves through typical structures and their interaction with concealed pipework, wiring and timber. All current methods are overviewed and analysed. Novel microwave sensor described in this paper operates in 6 GHz to 12 GHz frequency range using Marconi 6200A microwave test set. Results of experimental test confirm that microwaves can be used as an alternative nondestructive method for identifying different object behind the walls

    Chaos induced coherence in two independent food chains

    Coherence evolution of two food web models can be obtained under the stirring effect of chaotic advection. Each food web model sustains a three--level trophic system composed of interacting predators, consumers and vegetation. These populations compete for a common limiting resource in open flows with chaotic advection dynamics. Here we show that two species (the top--predators) of different colonies chaotically advected by a jet--like flow can synchronize their evolution even without migration interaction. The evolution is charaterized as a phase synchronization. The phase differences (determined through the Hilbert transform) of the variables representing those species show a coherent evolution.Comment: 5 pages, 5 eps figures.     Critical evaluation of cultural heritage architectual standard documentation methods across different european countries

    This article presents the current guidelines/standards for architectural documentation in various countries. Available regulations, applicable documents, technical guidelines, and good practices were analysed, together with selected examples of 3D digitisation projects. The results of the evaluation were compared with the guidelines for generating 3D documentation proposed by The Expert Group on Digital Cultural Heritage (EU) and Europeana. The analyses show no unambiguous hard technical guidelines. Still, there is a set of proposed guidelines and good practices to correctly carry out the 3D digitalisation process and the selection of equipment for the inventory of selected classes of object types. For this reason, it is recommended to detail the guidelines for the selection of equipment and the possible accuracy of the final architectural documentation derived from geospatial data

    Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Carbon-Based Graded Coatings

    The paper presents research on coatings with advanced architecture, composed of a Cr/Cr2N ceramic/metal multilayer and graded carbon layers with varying properties from Cr/a-C:H to a-C:N. The microstructure of the coatings was analysed using transmission electron microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, the mechanical properties were tested by nanoindentation, spherical indentation, and scratch testing, and tribological tests were also conducted. The proper selection of subsequent layers in graded coatings allowed high hardness and fracture resistance to be obtained as well as good adhesion to multilayers. Moreover, these coatings have higher wear resistance than single coatings and a friction coefficient equal to 0.25

    A flexible, extensible object oriented real-time near photorealistic visualization system:the system framework design

    In this paper we describe a novel, extensible visualization system currently under development at Aston University. We introduce modern programming methods, such as the use of data driven programming, design patterns, and the careful definition of interfaces to allow easy extension using plug-ins, to 3D landscape visualization software. We combine this with modern developments in computer graphics, such as vertex and fragment shaders, to create an extremely flexible, extensible real-time near photorealistic visualization system. In this paper we show the design of the system and the main sub-components. We stress the role of modern programming practices and illustrate the benefits these bring to 3D visualization. © 2006 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
