    Kinetic equations for thermal degradation of polymers

    Kinetic equations are analyzed for thermal degradation of polymers. The governing relations are based on the fragmentation-annihilation concept. Explicit solutions to these equations are derived in two particular cases of interest. For arbitrary values of adjustable parameters, the evolution of the number-average and mass-average molecular weights of polymers is analyzed numerically. Good agreement is demonstrated between the results of numerical simulation and experimental data. It is revealed that the model can correctly predict observations in thermo-gravimetric tests when its parameters are determined by matching experimental data for the decrease in molecular weight with exposure time

    Evaluation of the CO2 Storage Capacity in Sandstone Formations from the Southeast Mesohellenic trough (Greece)

    This study investigates the capability of the Southeast Mesohellenic Trough (SE MHT) sandstone formations to serve as a potential reservoir for CO2 storage in response to the emerging climate change issues by promoting environmentally friendly mineral sequestration applications. Sandstone samples, for the first time, were evaluated for their petrographic characteristics, mineral chemistry, geochemical properties, as well as their petrophysical and gas adsorption properties through tests. The sandstones were tested and classified into distinct groups. The most promising site to be considered for pilot CO2 storage testing is the Pentalofos Formation locality since its sandstones display specific mineral phases with the proper modal composition to conceivably react with injected CO2, leading to the development of newly formed and stable secondary mineral phases. The gas adsorption results are also more encouraging for sandstones from this sedimentary formation. All the measured UCS (uniaxial compressive strength), Ei (bending stiffness), and ν (Poisson’s ratio) results are above those dictated by international standards to perform CO2 storage practices safely. Furthermore, the specified targeted locality from the Pentalofos Formation holds the geological advantage of being overlaid by an impermeable cap-rock formation, making it suitable for deploying CO2 mineralization practices. The demarcated area could permanently store a calculated amount of ~50 × 105 tons of CO2 within the geological reservoir by reacting with the specified mineral phases, as specified through the proposed petrographic PrP index (potential reactive phases)

    Discrete population balance models of random agglomeration and cleavage in polymer pyrolysis

    The processes of random agglomeration and cleavage (both of which are important for the development of new models of polymer combustion, but are also applicable in a wide range of fields including atmospheric physics, radiation modelling and astrophysics) are analysed using population balance methods. The evolution of a discrete distribution of particles is considered within this framework, resulting in a set of ordinary differential equations for the individual particle concentrations. Exact solutions for these equations are derived, together with moment generating functions. Application of the discrete Laplace transform (analogous to the Z-transform) is found to be effective in these problems, providing both exact solutions for particle concentrations and moment generating functions. The combined agglomeration-cleavage problem is also considered. Unfortunately, it has been impossible to find an exact solution for the full problem, but a stable steady state has been identified and computed

    New CAST limit on the axion-photon interaction

    Hypothetical low-mass particles, such as axions, provide a compelling explanation for the dark matter in the universe. Such particles are expected to emerge abundantly from the hot interior of stars. To test this prediction, the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) uses a 9 T refurbished Large Hadron Collider test magnet directed towards the Sun. In the strong magnetic field, solar axions can be converted to X-ray photons which can be recorded by X-ray detectors. In the 2013-2015 run, thanks to low-background detectors and a new X-ray telescope, the signal-to-noise ratio was increased by about a factor of three. Here, we report the best limit on the axion-photon coupling strength (0.66 × 10 -10 GeV -1 at 95% confidence level) set by CAST, which now reaches similar levels to the most restrictive astrophysical bounds

    Improved search for solar chameleons with a GridPix detector at CAST

    We report on a new search for solar chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). A GridPix detector was used to search for soft X-ray photons in the energy range from 200 eV to 10 keV from converted solar chameleons. No significant excess over the expected background has been observed in the data taken in 2014 and 2015. We set an improved limit on the chameleon photon coupling, beta(gamma) less than or similar to 5.7 x 10(10) for 1 < beta(m) < 10(6) at 95% C.L. improving our previous results by a factor two and for the first time reaching sensitivity below the solar luminosity bound for tachocline magnetic fields up to 12.5 T

    Rabies outbreak in Greece during 2012-2014: use of Geographical Information System for analysis, risk assessment and control

    The objectives of this work were (i) geographical analysis of the 2012–2014 outbreak of rabies in Greece using GIS and (ii) comparative analysis of animal cases with data of potential human exposure to rabies together with environmental data, in order to provide information for risk assessment, effective monitoring and control. Most animal cases (40/48) involved red foxes, while domestic animals were also diagnosed with rabies. Overall, 80% of the cases were diagnosed in central northern Greece; 75% of the cases were diagnosed in low altitudes (<343·5 m), within a distance of 1 km from human settlements. Median distance from livestock farms was 201·25 m. Most people potentially exposed to rabies (889/1060) presented with dog bite injuries. Maximum entropy analysis revealed that distance from farms contributed the highest percentage in defining environmental niche profiles for rabid foxes. Oral vaccination programmes were implemented in 24 administrative units of the country during 2013 and 2014, covering a total surface area of ~60 000 km2. Rabies re-occurrence in Greece emphasizes the need for ongoing surveillance in cross-border areas and in areas with intense human activity
