A flight test method for pilot/aircraft analysis
In high precision flight maneuvres a pilot is a part of a closed loop pilot/aircraft system. The assessment of the flying qualities is highly dependent on the closed loop characteristics related to precision maneuvres like approach, landing, air-to-air tracking, air-to-ground tracking, close formation flying and air-to air refueling of the receiver. The object of a research program at DFVLR is the final flight phase of an air to ground mission. In this flight phase the pilot has to align the aircraft with the target, correct small deviations from the target direction and keep the target in his sights for a specific time period. To investigate the dynamic behavior of the pilot-aircraft system a special ground attack flight test technique with a prolonged tracking maneuvres was developed. By changing the targets during the attack the pilot is forced to react continously on aiming errors in his sights. Thus the closed loop pilot/aircraft system is excited over a wide frequency range of interest, the pilot gets more information about mission oriented aircraft dynamics and suitable flight test data for a pilot/aircraft analysis can be generated

Measurements of wall-shear stress fields on the piston crown in an IC engine flow using fluorescent labelled micro-pillar imaging
The measurement of wall shear-stress along the crown of a moving piston is accomplished with an array of hair-like, flexible micro-pillar sensors (MPS) in an internal combustion (IC) engine during intake flow conditions. The MPS are wall-clamped flexible micro-cylinders of 20micron diameter made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) positioned on the surface of a transparent planar piston crown and protruding into the boundary layer flow above the piston at a height of 390micron. Their tips are labelled with fluorophores and are illuminated with a scanning laser-sheet system that follows the piston motion in synchronous manner. The flow-induced deflection is recorded through the transparent piston crown from below with a compact shaft-mounted high-speed camera recording the fluorescent re-emitted light from the pillar tips and using the fact of optical wave-guide features of the transparent micro-pillars. The experiments were performed in a transparent 4-valve engine setup (1.6 liter Prince 2, N13B16) during the intake phase. In order to improve the temporal resolution, the running speed of the engine was scaled down using water as working liquid. A static and dynamic sensor-calibration enabled the precise measurements of the wall-shear stress distribution with the sensor array. Due to spatial resolution limits of current available compact high-speed camera the recorded region along the piston was limited to 4x2 mm2 with 8x4 pillars in full view. The recordings at 300fps show the WSS fluctuations induced by the valve-jet / piston-wall interaction in the beginning of the intake with strong wall-normal motion forming critical points in the WSS field such as saddles, nodes and foci. Over the intake cycle > CA 80° these fluctuations die out and flow is transformed into wall-parallel coherent motion prescribed by the formation of the tumble
Paleoseismic and Slip-Rate Observations along the Honey Lake Fault Zone, Northeastern California, USA
The Honey Lake fault is a major strike-slip fault in northeastern California that accommodates northwest-directed right-lateral shear in the northern Walker Lane. We reexamine the fault’s paleoseismic history and slip rate by evaluating a natural stream bank exposure of the fault and offset terrace riser. Structural and stratigraphic relations within the modern stream cut, radiocarbon ages, and a detailed topographic survey of the offset terrace riser are used to estimate a Holocene fault slip rate of 1.7–0.6 mm/yr or more. We also interpret the occurrence of at least four surface-rupturing earthquakes during the last 7025 calendar years before present (B.P.). Three of the surface-rupturing earthquakes occurred prior to 4670 calendar years B.P. and have interevent times that range between 730 and 990 yr. The stratigraphic record is limited after ~4670 calendar years B.P., and records evidence for at least one more subsequent surface-rupturing earthquake
True airspeed measured by airborne laser Doppler velocimeter
Velocimeter utilizing carbon dioxide laser measures true airspeed of aircraft. Results of flight tests indicate that clear-weather airspeeds can be measured with accuracy better than 0.1% at altitudes up to 3000 meters; measurements can be made at much greater altitudes in cloudy or turbid air
