In this study, it was aimed to determine the types of feedback that middle school mathematics teachers use in their classroom settings and how these feedbacks differ according to grade level. The study was carried out in the second term of 2018-2019 academic year and in the first term of 2019-2020 academic year by using the special case method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The research was carried out with three mathematics teachers working in the same public school in the district of Kaynarca, Sakarya. As the data collection tools, the observation form prepared on the basis of the feedback classification by Tunstall and Gipps(1996) translated into Turkish by Kögce (2012) and the video recordings in which the lessons were observed were used. The data set of the study consists of a total of 32 class hours recorded by three mathematics teachers' cameras. The data obtained from a total of 32 lesson hours, 8 lessons per class, were analyzed with a content analysis approach. According to the findings of the research, it was concluded that middle school mathematics teachers used both evaluative and descriptive feedback to a certain extent, and the most frequently used feedback categories were positive evaluative feedback and development-related feedback. It was seen that the most used type of feedback from evaluative feedback was approval, and punishment feedback was almost never used. It was seen that the most frequently used feedbacks from descriptive feedback form the development path and indicate the improvement. As a result of the research, the preferences of middle school mathematics teachers to use evaluative feedback in 5th and 6th grades tended to descriptive feedback in 7th and 8th grades

Caffeic acid (CA), ferulic acid (FA) and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) have a broad anticancer effect on various cell lines. In this study, nine ferulic and caffeic acid-based 1,2,4 and 1,3,4 oxadiazole molecular hybrids were synthesized and their cytotoxic activity was evaluated mainly against Glioblastoma (GBM) cell lines. Compounds 1 and 5 exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against three different GBM cell lines (LN229, T98G, and U87), without toxicity to healthy human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC). In addition, their cytotoxicity was also evaluated against three additional cancer cell lines and more inhibitory results were found than GBM cell lines. The IC50 values of compound 5 in U87, T98G, LN229, SKOV3, MCF7, and A549 cells were determined as 35.1, 34.4, 37.9, 14.2, 30.9, and 18.3 µM. In the light of biological activity studies, the developed compounds have a high potential to lead studies for the development of new drug candidates for the treatment of cancer

Grave structures are architectural works reflecting the cultural accumulation, continuity and political power of societies. In the context of sustainability, while "green building" certification systems are developing in building productions in the world, new guidelines are also being created. Of course, new guidelines are also being developed on the certification as green buildings within the scope of the protection and restoration of historical buildings that should be specially considered. In this study, it is aimed to create a model that will allow the historical buildings in Turkey to be evaluated in the context of “the green building” concept. With this model, it is considered that historical building conservation practices will contribute positively to the works of restorers in making those heritage sites more environmentally friendly and sustainable. For the model designed to evaluate historical buildings within the scope of green buildings, historical buildings were handled under 3 groups: a) 1st Group Historical Buildings, b) 2nd Group Historical Buildings and c) Reconstructed Historical Buildings. As creating the designed model, GBC-Italy system criteria were taken as the basis. The criteria were carried out by conducting a questionnaire with experts in this field. Importance of the relevant evaluation criteria in the scoring system were determined by using the AHP method. As a result of the analyzes and calculations, the accuracy of the scoring was confirmed. As historical buildings are evaluated according to the conditions of their periods, it is obvious that they are sustainable buildings. Naturally, nowadays to be able to preserve historical buildings for the future generations in a proper way is usually ensured by giving them a new function. The requirements of the new functions given to create the necessary equipment to provide today's comfort conditions in historical buildings naturally change the sustainable characteristics of the historical heritage. This evaluation system, designed to preserve the green building characteristics of historical buildings and to ensure their sustainability with their new functions, will be an important guide

DergiPark: 379004tmsjBehcet’s disease (BD), first described by the Turkish dermatologist Hulusi Behcet in 1937, is characterized by triad of symptoms that include oral aphthous lesions, genital ulcerations and iritis with hypopyon. The etiopathogenesis is not yet fully explained, although reactive oxygen species produced (ROS) by the hyperfunction of neutrophils which are significant for the immune response are thought to play a role. Antioxidant defense system protects the body against the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species. Normally, there is a balance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defense system but as levels of reactive oxygen species are above the body’s neutralization and elimination ability disrupts the balance. With the imbalance, increased levels of reactive oxygen species disrupt biomolecules such as lipids, proteins, nucleic acids and cause cell, tissue and organ damage. Studies with parameters associated with antioxidant defense system are included in our study. When viewed as whole, most of the studies support that imbalance between oxidants/antioxidants plays a role in etiopathogenesis of Behcet’s disease but it should not be forgotten that there are studies show otherwise. Reactive oxygen species affect patients with active disease more than patients with inactive disease. In conclusion, studies classified in detail with larger group of patients on Behcet’s disease are needed. If patients’ clinical findings and levels of oxidants and antioxidants are interpreted together in the studies, they can be used to monitor the disease and success of the therap

Background: The sexual attitudes and beliefs of midwifery students, who play an important role in improving sexual health, can affect both the students themselves and people with disabilities to whom they provide education and counselling. This study aimed to determine the attitudes and beliefs of midwifery students on sexuality and the evaluation of sexuality. Methods: This research is a mixed-method study that includes two stages: qualitative and quantitative. In the first stage, data was collected from 334 students using a socio-demographic data form and the sexual attitude and belief scale. The second stage involved conducting phenomenological interviews with 21 students. Results: The students who believed they had adequate knowledge about sexuality and reproductive health, as well as those who had previously engaged in scientific activities related to sexuality, held more positive attitudes and beliefs towards sexual care. The qualitative section of the study identified four main themes, each containing 13 sub-themes, which provided further insights into the students\u27 perspectives on the subject. Conclusions: The students acknowledged that their society had strict sexual taboos, but their attitudes toward sexuality changed after studying sexual health and women\u27s health at university. The study highlighted the challenges faced by midwifery students in assessing sexual health. By addressing these difficulties, trained midwives can better evaluate the sexual health of patients in clinical settings, leading to early detection of sexual problems. Keywords: Sexuality, Sexual health, Sex educatio

DergiPark: 379047tmsjAims: Testicular and extratesticular masses can be found in scrotum. Although most of those masses are intratesticular, some develop from paratesticular tissues. In this case report, we analyzed the results of a patient admitted to the hospital complaining of a scroted mass causing pain. Case Report: Epididymectomy was performed to a 5-year-old man patient with an expanding scrotal mass which was causing pain. After running some tests, performing initial investigations like scrotal ultrasound scan and MR, there were still doubts about the risk of malignancy. To be sure about the mass whether it is a tumor or an infection, epididymectomy was decided to be performed. The day after the operation, the patient was discharged with no complications. His complaints eased after the operation. Conclusion: The scrotum is the sac that contains the testicles. A scrotal mass can be originated from testicles or paratesticular tissues. Although 3% of all solid extratesticular masses are malignant, previous studies have shown that the malignancy rate can raise up to 16%. That’s why scrotal masses which are not certainly benign must not be ignored and epididymectomy should be performed

Aim: COVID-19 infections the tissue through angiotensin converting enzyme 2 receptor, which is also expressed on endothelial cells. Endothelial dysfunction may be associated with lung involvement. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an indirect marker of endothelial dysfunction. The aim of our study was to evaluate ADMA concentrations and to identify its association with lung involvement in patients with COVID19 disease. Methods: We included 42 patients with COVID-19 infection and lung involvement (Group 1). Forty-two age and sex matched patients without pneumonia acted as the control group (Group 2). All patients gave blood samples for ADMA at the 1st month control visit after discharge. We compared C-reactive protein (CRP) and ADMA concentrations in addition to routine biochemical parameters between groups. Results: Patients with lung involvement had higher admission glucose, CRP, and ADMA concentrations, and displayed lower hemoglobin concentration and lymphocyte count compared to patients without lung involvement. Although patients with lung involvement had higher ADMA concentrations with respect to those without; plasma ADMA levels were also higher than normal values in control group. Multivariate analysis identified log CRP concentration (OR= 3.047, 95% CI=1.881-5.023, p<0.001) as the independent predictor for lung involvement. And, there was a correlation between ADMA and CRP (r: 0.318, p: 0.003). Conclusion: We revealed elevated ADMA concentrations as the surrogate of endothelial dysfunction in COVID-19 patients whether they have pneumonia or not

Background: Arterial hypertension may accompany metabolic syndrome (MetS) which is strongly associated with cardiovascular diseases. Determining high-risk groups concerning MetS development is crucial to prevent this undesirable clinic. Serum uric acid level was demonstrated to be associated with development of hypertension and MetS in normal population. It was aimed to investigate the role of serum uric acid for the prediction of MetS in non-diabetic hypertensive individuals. Material and methods: Patients who were diagnosed with arterial hypertension between January 2021 and June 2021 were included in the study. Diabetes mellitus was determined as an exclusion criteria. Metabolic syndrome was considered as the clustering of high blood pressure, elevated glucose level, abnormal cholesterol levels, and abdominal obesity conditions according to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) definition. Patients were divided into two groups by the presence of MetS. Results: The mean age of 107 non-diabetic hypertensive patients was 48.5 ± 8.6 years and 50 (46.7%) of them were female. A total of 56 patients (52%) had MetS. Waist circumference (101.2 ± 11.3 vs. 106.7 ± 10.1 cm, p = 0.020), body mass index (30.6 ± 4.9 vs. 32.8 ± 4.1, p = 0.016), E/e’ ratio [9.2 (7.3–11.1) vs. 10.6 (9.1–13.4), p = 0.003], EAT [5.9 (4.8–8) vs. 7.9 (6–9.6), p = 0.006], and serum uric acid level (4.75 ± 1.10 vs. 5.82 ± 1.21 mg/dL, p < 0.001) were higher in MetS (+) group. Multivariable regression demonstrated that serum uric acid [(odds ratio) OR = 2.217, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.300–3.783, p = 0.003] and body mass index (OR = 1.214, 95% CI: 1.032–1.428, p = 0.019) were independent predictors of MetS presence. Conclusion: Serum uric acid level predicted MetS presence in non-diabetic hypertensive individuals independently. This practical blood parameter can be used to evaluate those who are at risk of MetS development.
