Do Ethical Firms Bridge the Gender Gap in CEO Compensation?
Concern about the gender gap in employee compensation is an important social and business issue. Effective corporate social responsibility requires fair treatment of all employees, regardless of gender. Using a sample of firms that have been noted for their ethical behavior, this study examines whether ethical firms compensate female CEOs comparably to male CEOs. Our sample of ethical firms includes companies listed as one of the ā100 Best Corporate Citizensā by Corporate Responsibility (formerly Business Ethics) magazine and with data available in Compustat, CRSP, and ExecuComp for fiscal years 1998-2009. We hypothesize that ethical firms, relative to non-list firms, close (or at least narrow) the gender gap in CEO compensation. Our findings indicate that female CEOs of ethical companies are not penalized for their gender (that is, they do not earn less than their male counterparts)

Kinematic classifications of local interacting galaxies: implications for the merger/disk classifications at high-z
The classification of galaxy mergers and isolated disks is key for
understanding the relative importance of galaxy interactions and secular
evolution during the assembly of galaxies. The kinematic properties of galaxies
as traced by emission lines have been used to suggest the existence of a
significant population of high-z star-forming galaxies consistent with isolated
rotating disks. However, recent studies have cautioned that post-coalescence
mergers may also display disk-like kinematics. To further investigate the
robustness of merger/disk classifications based on kinematic properties, we
carry out a systematic classification of 24 local (U)LIRGs spanning a range of
galaxy morphologies: from isolated spiral galaxies, ongoing interacting
systems, to fully merged remnants. We artificially redshift the WiFeS
observations of these local (U)LIRGs to z=1.5 to make a realistic comparison
with observations at high-z, and also to ensure that all galaxies have the same
spatial sampling of ~900 pc. Using both kinemetry-based and visual
classifications, we find that the reliability of kinematic classification shows
a strong trend with the interaction stage of galaxies. Mergers with two nuclei
and tidal tails have the most distinct kinematic properties compared to
isolated disks, whereas a significant population of the interacting disks and
merger remnants are indistinguishable from isolated disks. The high fraction of
late-stage mergers showing disk-like kinematics reflects the complexity of the
dynamics during galaxy interactions. However, the exact fractions of
misidentified disks and mergers depend on the definition of kinematic
asymmetries and the classification threshold when using kinemetry-based
classifications. Our results suggest that additional indicators such as
morphologies traced by stars or molecular gas are required to further constrain

Ribofuranoza kao nosaÄ tetraoksanske i 4-aminohinolinske antimalarijske farmakofore
Several tetraoxane and 4-aminoquinoline molecules were prepared in order to examine the influence of ribofuranose as a carrier molecule on the antimalarial activity of test compounds. The synthesized compounds showed pronounced antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine susceptible D6, chloroquine resistant W2 and multidrug-resistant TM91C235 (Thailand) strains. The aminoquinoline derivative 4 was more active against W2 and TM91C235 strains than the control compounds (CQ and MFQ).U ovom radu prikazana je sinteza nekoliko ribofuranozidnih tetraoksana i 4-aminohinolina u cilju sagledavanja odnosa struktura-aktivnost ove vrste antimalarika. Jedinjenja su pokazala izraženu antimalarijsku aktivnost prema hlorokin-osetljivom (D6), hlorokin-rezistentnom (W2) i viŔestruko rezistentnom (TM91C235 (Thailand)) soju Plasmodium falciparum. Aminohinolinski derivat 4 je aktivniji prema W2 i TM91C235 sojevima od kontrolnih jedinjenja (hlorokin i meflokin)

Onset of experimental severe cardiac fibrosis is mediated by overexpression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) 2 is a recently identified homologue of ACE. There is great interest in the therapeutic benefit for ACE2 overexpression in the heart. However, the role of ACE2 in the regulation of cardiac structure and function, as well as maintenance of systemic blood pressure, remains poorly understood. In cell culture, ACE2 overexpression led to markedly increased myocyte volume, assessed in primary rabbit myocytes. To assess ACE2 function in vivo, we used a recombinant adeno-associated virus 6 delivery system to provide 11-week overexpression of ACE2 in the myocardium of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats. ACE2, as well as the ACE inhibitor enalapril, significantly reduced systolic blood pressure. However, in the heart, ACE2 overexpression resulted in cardiac fibrosis, as assessed by histological analysis with concomitant deficits in ejection fraction and fractional shortening measured by echocardiography. Furthermore, global gene expression profiling demonstrated the activation of profibrotic pathways in the heart mediated by ACE2 gene delivery. This study demonstrates that sustained overexpression of ACE2 in the heart in vivo leads to the onset of severe fibrosis
