An investigation of vocational progression pathways for young people and adults in building crafts and hospitality CoVEs: A London case study
This report was commissioned by the Learning and Skills Development Agency's (LSDA–s) strategic programme of research and development, funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
The principal aim of this project is to explore how vocational pathways have been developed and enhanced in these two occupational areas among 14–19 year olds and employed adults in London. The project identifies how well the selected CoVEs have performed against various factors

Ethnicity, Education and Employment: Appendix F: UEL Case Study Report
This is the UEL case study report for the Ethnicity, Education and Employment (EEE)
project. In accordance with the overall aims of the project, this case study looks at the
perceptions of students, graduates, university staff and employers about the effectiveness
of policies and strategies at UEL aimed at supporting (Minority Ethnic) student participation
in Higher Education (HE). The case study was conducted through both desk research and
fieldwork including: the analysis of institutional policies; the analysis of institutional
statistics; interviews with Senior Managers, non-senior managers, students and
employers; focus groups with students; and participant observation.
The following report is an analysis of the findings; section 2 describes UEL's institutional profile, and aims to portray the institutional characteristics of UEL in order to make
comparison possible with other institutions participating in the project. Section 3 explains
the methodology used in UEL case study including the target groups in the study. Section
4 is an analysis of the institutional student statistics relating to ethnicity; and section 5 is a
study of the institutional policies and practices on Widening Participation (WP), Graduate
Employability, and Equality and Diversity. Sections 6, 7, 8 and 9 cover the analysis of
interviews with Senior Managers, non-senior mangers, graduates, and students. Section
10 briefly illustrates the employer's view on graduate employability. Sections 11 and 12
present the institutional findings and recommendations developed from the desk based
research and fieldwork results. These recommendations are based largely on the findings
from the qualitative interviews, especially those with students, given the focus of this
project on qualitative student centred research
Measuring the Leptonic CP Phase in Oscillations
In oscillations, we find that the effect of the CP
phase becomes large in the region km. In this
region, the change of the probability in this channel reaches about 0.4 due to
the CP phase effect beyond our expectation in the case of large 1-3 mixing
angle. Furthermore, the CP phase effect have almost same sign over the region
GeV so that one may find the signal of CP violation by measuring the
total rate only. As an example, we use an experimental setup and demonstrate
that the allowed region is limited to one by combined analysis of and
events although there remain three allowed regions by the analysis
of events alone.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, version to appear in PL
Herpes simplex virus induces the marked up-regulation of the zinc finger transcriptional factor INSM1, which modulates the expression and localization of the immediate early protein ICP0
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Herpes simplex viruses (HSVs) rapidly shut off macromolecular synthesis in host cells. In contrast, global microarray analyses have shown that HSV infection markedly up-regulates a number of host cell genes that may play important roles in HSV-host cell interactions. To understand the regulatory mechanisms involved, we initiated studies focusing on the zinc finger transcription factor insulinoma-associated 1 (INSM1), a host cell protein markedly up-regulated by HSV infection.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>INSM1 gene expression in HSV-1-infected normal human epidermal keratinocytes increased at least 400-fold 9 h after infection; INSM1 promoter activity was also markedly stimulated. Expression and subcellular localization of the immediate early HSV protein ICP0 was affected by INSM1 expression, and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays revealed binding of INSM1 to the ICP0 promoter. Moreover, the role of INSM1 in HSV-1 infection was further clarified by inhibition of HSV-1 replication by INSM1-specific siRNA.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results suggest that INSM1 up-regulation plays a positive role in HSV-1 replication, probably by binding to the ICP0 promoter.</p
Herpes simplex virus UL56 interacts with and regulates the Nedd4-family ubiquitin ligase Itch
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is one of many viruses that exploits and modifies the cellular ubiquitin system. HSV-2 expresses the tegument protein UL56 that has been implicated in cytoplasmic transport and/or release of virions, and is a putative regulatory protein of Nedd4 ubiquitin ligase. In order to elucidate the biological function of UL56, this study examined the interaction of UL56 with the Nedd4-family ubiquitin ligase Itch and its role in the regulation of Itch. Additionally, we assessed the similarity between UL56 and regulatory proteins of Itch and Nedd4, Nedd4-family-interactins proteins (Ndfip).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>UL56 interacted with Itch, independent of additional viral proteins, and mediated more striking degradation of Itch, compared to Nedd4. Moreover, it was suggested that the lysosome pathway as well as the proteasome pathway was involved in the degradation of Itch. Other HSV-2 proteins with PY motifs, such as VP5 and VP16, did not mediate the degradation of endogenous Itch. Ndfip1 and Ndfip2 were similar in subcellular distribution patterns to UL56 and colocalized with UL56 in co-transfected cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We believe that this is the first report demonstrating the interaction of a HSV-specific protein and Itch. Thus, UL56 could function as a regulatory protein of Itch. The mechanism, function and significance of regulating Itch in HSV-2 infection remain unclear and warrant further investigation.</p

Theoretical Study of 3D Radiated Sound Field Reproduction System Using Directional Loudspeakers and Boundary Surface Control
ABSTRACT In order to realize a 3D radiated sound field with which multiple listeners can listen to a sound anywhere around the object without having to wear equipment such as headphones, we proposed a near 3D sound field reproduction system using directional loudspeakers and wave field synthesis. The size of the loudspeaker array, however, is the same as that of the microphone array in the conventional system. Thus, when the size of the loudspeaker array differs, the 3D radiated sound field captured by the microphone array cannot be accurately reproduced. In this paper, the mathematical derivation of the reproduced 3D radiated sound field via inverse filtering based on acoustic transfer functions is described and the 3D radiated sound field reproduction system using directional loudspeakers and boundary surface control is newly proposed
New Index of CP Phase Effect and Screening in Long Baseline Neutrino Experiments
We introduce a new index of the leptonic CP phase dependence and
derive the maximal condition for this index in a simple and general form.
may be realized even in the JPARC experiment. In the
case that the 1-3 mixing angle can be observed in the next generation reactor
experiments, namely , and nevertheless
appearance signal cannot be observed in the JPARC experiment, we conclude that
the CP phase becomes a value around for
without depending the uncertainties
of solar and atmospheric parameters.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, version to appear in PL
