Governing Juana: Madness and Manipulation of Power in Three Spanish American Plays on Juana la Loca

This article examines the representation of Juana of Castile in three twentieth-century Spanish American plays — Zavalía’s El corazón extraviado — (Argentina, 1957), Sabido’s Falsa crónica de Juana la Loca (Mexico, 1985), and Rueda’s Retablo de la pasión y muerte de Juana la Loca (Dominican Republic, 1996) — that portray the queen sympathetically as the victim of elaborate plots to usurp her authority. While the plays expose her madness as a pretext used by her father King Fernando and her son Emperor Carlos V to confine her for nearly half a century in the palace of Tordesillas, they do not deny the basic premises of the official history of “Juana la loca.” Thus, the captive queen is represented on stage as not only unable to govern Spain, but also as unable to control herself, leading others to “govern Juana.” (KL and AMS, Article in English

Activity maps for location-aware computing

The Problem: Location-based context is important for many applications. Previous systems offered only coarse room-level features or used manually specified room regions to determine fine-scale features. We propose a location context mechanism based on activity maps, which define regions of similar context based on observations of 3-D patterns of location and motion in an environment. We describe an algorithm for obtaining activity maps in real time using the spatio-temporal clustering of visual tracking data. Motivation: In many cases, fine grain location based information is preferred. One example would be to control lights and air conditioning, e.g. the desk lamp might light up and the air conditioning starts whenever a user is sitting at his desk. In addition the phone might become activated and the computer screen get invoked from stand-by mode. Similarly in a small group meeting the system could know where and how many people are in the room and could make appropriate settings for lights, air conditioning, and computer tools. For each of these tasks, location context information is important [3]. Simply considering the instantaneous 3-D location of users is useful, but alone is insufficient as context information. Queered islamophobia and queer muslim forms of resistance in times of homonationalism

El presente artículo analiza el homonacionalismo desde el cuestionamiento a los discursos culturalistas dicotómicos que dicho fenómeno plantea. En primer lugar, se describen las vinculaciones históricas entre diversidad sexual y de género, racismo y neoliberalismo. A continuación, se aborda la emergencia de un proceso de queerización de la islamofobia nutrido por la instrumentalización neoliberal de los sujetos queer para promover la representación LGBTQ+fóbica del islam. Acto seguido, se evidencia cómo la relación entre las políticas LGBTQ+ transnacionales y la islamofobia queerizada ha provocado un rechazo hacia lo LGBTQ+ en el marco de los Estados arabo-islámicos postcoloniales. Finalmente, se ahonda en el análisis de las identidades musulmanas queer contemporáneas poniendo el foco en sus formas diferenciadas de resistencia frente a los discursos de oposición entre islam y diversidad sexo-genérica, tanto los provenientes de interpretaciones tradicionalistas del islam, como los islamófobos propios del homonacionalismoThis article examines homonationalism through the questioning of the dichotomic culturalist discourses that such phenomenon poses. Firstly, it describes the historical connections between gender and sexual diversity, racism and neoliberalism. Next, it addresses the emergence of a process of queerization of Islamophobia, nourished by the neoliberal instrumentalization of queer subjects with the objective of promoting an LGBTQ+phobic depiction of Islam. Thereafter, it calls attention to how the combination of transnational LGBTQ+ politics and queered Islamophobia caused a rejection towards the LGBTQ+ within the context of Arab-Islamic postcolonial states. EVALUATING THRUST BELT RESPONSE TO GLACIAL EROSION, SYNOROGENIC SEDIMENTATION, AND SUBDUCTION OF A THICK PLATE: ANALOG MODELING INSIGHTS INTO THE ST. ELIAS RANGE, ALASKA

The goal of this research is to improve our understanding of the structural configuration of convergent margins in response to glacial erosion, synorogenic sedimentation, and subduction of thick crust. Currently, most mechanical development models of convergent margins are disconnected from the role of these processes and their potential coupled tectonic response. To evaluate the role of these processes, we utilized analog sandbox modeling to generate physical insights into the structural growth of wedge shaped thrust belts. We then compared our modeling results to recent, field-based geological and geophysical studies of the St. Elias orogen, located along the convergent margin of southern Alaska. This margin is characterized by large erosive glacial systems, some of the highest recorded depositional rates on earth, flat-slab subduction of ~17 km thick section of an oceanic plateau, and is one of the most tectonically active plate boundaries on earth

Ways of Seeing: Sexism the Forgotten Prejudice?

Recent developments in feminism, charted in Gender, Place and Culture over the past 21 years, have stressed the relational, differentiated and contested nature of gender. This has led to the rejection of the unified category women, and with this the right for feminism to make claims on behalf of all women. This paper argues that an unintended consequence of this development in ways of thinking about gender is that patriarchy as a form of power relations has become relatively neglected. It draws on research from a European Research Council project (including biographical interviews and case studies of a gym and workplace) to demonstrate that while the development of equality legislation has contained the public expression of the most blatant forms of gender prejudice, sexism persists and is manifest in subtle ways. As a consequence, it can be difficult to name and challenge with the effect that patriarchy as a power structure which systematically (re)produces gender inequalities,is obscured by its ordinariness. Rather, sexism appears only to be ‘seen’ when it affords the instantiation of other forms of prejudice, such as Islamophobia. As such, we argue that Gender, Place and Culture has a responsibility going forward to make sexism as a particular form of prejudice more visible, while also exposing the complexity and fluidity of its intersectional relationship to other forms of oppression and social categories
