    Revealed preferences for macroeconomic stabilization

    Get PDF
In the new Keynesian model of endogenous stabilization governments have objectives with respect to macroeconomic performance, but are constrained by an augmented Phillips curve. Because they react more quickly to inflation shocks than private agents, governments can lean against the macroeconomic wind. We develop an econometric test of this characterization of the political-economic equilibrium. Applying this methodology to a variety of quadratic social welfare functions provides inferences about the functional form of stabilization preferences and about the formation of expectations.endogenous stabilization, policy objectives, adaptive expectations

Why do cosmological perturbations look classical to us?

According to the inflationary scenario of cosmology, all structure in the Universe can be traced back to primordial fluctuations during an accelerated (inflationary) phase of the very early Universe. A conceptual problem arises due to the fact that the primordial fluctuations are quantum, while the standard scenario of structure formation deals with classical fluctuations. In this essay we present a concise summary of the physics describing the quantum-to-classical transition. We first discuss the observational indistinguishability between classical and quantum correlation functions in the closed system approach (pragmatic view). We then present the open system approach with environment-induced decoherence. We finally discuss the question of the fluctuations' entropy for which, in principle, the concrete mechanism leading to decoherence possesses observational relevance.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, invited contribution to a special issue of Advanced Science Letters, final versio

Quantum-gravitational effects on gauge-invariant scalar and tensor perturbations during inflation: The de Sitter case

We present detailed calculations for quantum-gravitational corrections to the power spectra of gauge-invariant scalar and tensor perturbations during inflation. This is done by performing a semiclassical Born-Oppenheimer type of approximation to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, from which we obtain a Schroedinger equation with quantum-gravitational correction terms. As a first step, we perform our calculation for a de Sitter universe and find that the correction terms lead to an enhancement of power on the largest scales.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, clarifications and references added, version accepted for publication in Physical Review

Thermal Evolution and Core Formation on Asteroid 4 Vesta in the Magma Ocean Regime

Geochemical observations of the eucrite and diogenite meteorites, together with observations made by NASAs Dawn spacecraft while orbiting asteroid 4 Vesta, indicate that Vesta has differentiated to form a crust, mantle, and core. Eucrite and diogenite petrology is best explained by solidification of the crust from a magma ocean constituting 60-70% of Vestas silicates [3], or a temperature of ~1550 C. The abundances of moderately siderophile elements (Ni, Co, Mo, W, and P) in eucrites require that essentially all of the metallic phase in Vesta segregated to form a core prior to eucrite formation and likely reached a temperature of 1450- 1575 C. These observations provide important constraints on Vestas thermal evolution. The high inferred temperature indicates that convective heat transport must have been important during part of Vestas thermal evolution. In this study, we model Vestas thermal evolution in the magma ocean regime
