A Common Law for the Statutory Era: The Right of Publicity and New York\u27s Right of Privacy Statute
This note compares New York\u27s privacy statute with the common law right of publicity. The article first traces the history of each law, then goes on to compare their effects. The author argues that exploitation of persona warrants judicial recognition of a common law right of publicity in New York, despite the argument that the creation of such a right should be left to the discretion of the legislature
Cure kinetics of ring-opening metathesis polymerization of dicyclopentadiene
The cure kinetics of polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD) prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerization with three different concentrations of Grubbs' catalyst was examined using differential scanning calirimetry (DSC). The experimental data were used to test several different phenomenological kinetic models. The data are best modeled with a "model-free" isoconversional method. This analysis reveals that the activation energy increases significantly for degree of cure greater than 60%. Catalyst concentration is shown to have a large effect on the cure kinetics.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

Swinging and tumbling of elastic capsules in shear flow
The deformation of an elastic micro-capsule in an infinite shear flow is
studied numerically using a spectral method. The shape of the capsule and the
hydrodynamic flow field are expanded into smooth basis functions. Analytic
expressions for the derivative of the basis functions permit the evaluation of
elastic and hydrodynamic stresses and bending forces at specified grid points
in the membrane. Compared to methods employing a triangulation scheme, this
method has the advantage that the resulting capsule shapes are automatically
smooth, and few modes are needed to describe the deformation accurately.
Computations are performed for capsules both with spherical and ellipsoidal
unstressed reference shape. Results for small deformations of initially
spherical capsules coincide with analytic predictions. For initially
ellipsoidal capsules, recent approximative theories predict stable oscillations
of the tank-treading inclination angle, and a transition to tumbling at low
shear rate. Both phenomena have also been observed experimentally. Using our
numerical approach we could reproduce both the oscillations and the transition
to tumbling. The full phase diagram for varying shear rate and viscosity ratio
is explored. While the numerically obtained phase diagram qualitatively agrees
with the theory, intermittent behaviour could not be observed within our
simulation time. Our results suggest that initial tumbling motion is only
transient in this region of the phase diagram.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
In situ poly(urea-formaldehyde) microencapsulation of dicyclopentadiene
Microencapsulated healing agents that possess adequate strength, long shelf-life, and excellent bonding to the host material are required for self-healing materials. Ureaformaldehyde microcapsules containing dicyclopentadiene were prepared by in situ polymerization in an oil-in-water emulsion that meet these requirements for self-healing epoxy. Microcapsules of 10-1000 ??m in diameter were produced by appropriate selection of agitation rate in the range of 200-2000 rpm. A linear relation exists between log(mean diameter) and log(agitation rate). Surface morphology and shell wall thickness were investigated by optical and electron microscopy. Microcapsules are composed of a smooth 160-220 nm inner membrane and a rough, porous outer surface of agglomerated urea-formaldehyde nanoparticles. Surface morphology is influenced by pH of the reacting emulsion and interfacial surface area at the core-water interface. High yields (80-90%) of a free flowing powder of spherical microcapsules were produced with a fill content of 83-92 wt% as determined by CHN analysis.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe
New Aspects of Thromboangiitis obliterans (von Winiwarter-Buerger's Disease)
The existence of thromboangiitis obliterans as a clinical entity has been a matter of debate for many years. In contrast to other immunovasculitides there is no organ involvement while peripheral vessels are affected. Heavy smokers under 40 years of age have a high predisposition for the disease. The cerebral form shows relapsing brain infarctions which can be visualized in CCT while panarteriography remains negative. Apart from unspecific inflammatory signs in blood and CSF there are distinctive laboratory findings proving the autoimmunological character of von Winiwarter-Buerger's disease. In the serum anti-elastin antibodies, IgE and anticollagen antibody activity are detectable. In 3 patients the authors detected specific immunohistochemical findings in a biopsy specimen of the temporal artery. In addition to platelet-inhibiting substances corticoids in acute and azathioprine in chronic treatment becomes necessary
Wearing a bike helmet leads to less cognitive control, revealed by lower frontal midline theta power and risk indifference
A recent study claims that participants wearing a bike helmet behave riskier in a computer-based risk task compared to control participants without a bike helmet. We hypothesized that wearing a bike helmet reduces cognitive control over risky behavior. To test our hypothesis, we recorded participants' EEG brain responses while they played a risk game developed in our laboratory. Previously, we found that, in this risk game, anxious participants showed greater levels of cognitive control as revealed by greater frontal midline theta power, which was associated with less risky decisions. Here, we predicted that cognitive control would be reduced in the helmet group, indicated by reduced frontal midline theta power, and that this group would prefer riskier options in the risk game. In line with our hypothesis, we found that participants in the helmet group showed significantly lower frontal midline theta power than participants in the control group, indicating less cognitive control. We did not replicate the finding of generally riskier behavior in the helmet group. Instead, we found that participants chose the riskier option in about half of trials, no matter how risky the other option was. Our results suggest that wearing a bike helmet reduces cognitive control, as revealed by reduced frontal midline theta power, leading to risk indifference when evaluating potential behaviors
Fluctuation Induced Instabilities in Front Propagation up a Co-Moving Reaction Gradient in Two Dimensions
We study 2D fronts propagating up a co-moving reaction rate gradient in
finite number reaction-diffusion systems. We show that in a 2D rectangular
channel, planar solutions to the deterministic mean-field equation are stable
with respect to deviations from planarity. We argue that planar fronts in the
corresponding stochastic system, on the other hand, are unstable if the channel
width exceeds a critical value. Furthermore, the velocity of the stochastic
fronts is shown to depend on the channel width in a simple and interesting way,
in contrast to fronts in the deterministic MFE. Thus, fluctuations alter the
behavior of these fronts in an essential way. These affects are shown to be
partially captured by introducing a density cutoff in the reaction rate. Some
of the predictions of the cutoff mean-field approach are shown to be in
quantitative accord with the stochastic results
