Work place mobility: Comparing two groups of atypical workers This study compares employees in two forms of atypical employment deviating from the traditional norm of permanent, full-time employment. The groups compared were office workers employed by a temporary help agency with varying weekly work hours (n=257), and a group of persons seeking short-term employment in a traditional employment agency (n=778). Both groups are work place mobile, meaning that they work short periods for different organizations. The aim was (1) to describe recruitment to each group respectively, (2) to investigate the role of employment contract in relation to job perceptions, attitudes and health. Results revealed that those who seek short-term employment differ from the temps in terms of demographic characteristics. They were generally younger, and with a larger proportion of males. The latter group perceived a higher level of job security, social support and reported higher involvement with work in general. They also had generally lower levels of somatic symptoms and distress. These differences remain even when demographic differences and preferences were controlled for. Degree of underemployment was discussed an additional cause of negative health effects in atypical work. Finally the need for future research on working place mobile groups was encouraged, as was a dimensional approach in dealing with subgroups in this heterogeneous part of the labour market.I studien jämförs personal i två olika former av atypiska arbeten, dvs arbeten som avviker från normen tillsvidareanställning och heltid.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus: Interlaboratory ring trial to evaluate real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction detection methods

To compare the real-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays used for the diagnosis of Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), a Europe-wide interlaboratory ring trial was conducted. A variety of PRRSV strains including North American (NA) and European (EU) genotype isolates were analyzed by the participants. Great differences regarding qualitative diagnostics as well as analytical sensitivity were observed between the individual RT-qPCR systems, especially when investigating strains from the EU genotype. None of the assays or commercial kits used in the ring trial could identify all different PRRSV strains with an optimal analytical and diagnostic sensitivity. The genetic variability of the PRRSV strains, which is supposed to hinder the diagnostic of the RT-PCR because of mutations at the primer binding sites, was also confirmed by sequencing and subsequent phylogenetic analysis. In summary, a major problem in PRRSV diagnostics by RT-qPCR is false-negative results. To achieve maximum safety in the molecular diagnosis of PRRSV, the combined usage of different assays or kits is highly recommended

A Step Forward in Molecular Diagnostics of Lyssaviruses – Results of a Ring Trial among European Laboratories

Rabies is a lethal and notifiable zoonotic disease for which diagnostics have to meet the highest standards. In recent years, an evolution was especially seen in molecular diagnostics with a wide variety of different detection methods published. Therefore, a first international ring trial specifically designed on the use of reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for detection of lyssavirus genomic RNA was organized. The trial focussed on assessment and comparison of the performance of conventional and real-time assays. In total, 16 European laboratories participated. All participants were asked to investigate a panel of defined lyssavirus RNAs, consisting of Rabies virus (RABV) and European bat lyssavirus 1 and 2 (EBLV-1 and -2) RNA samples, with systems available in their laboratory. The ring trial allowed the important conclusion that conventional RT-PCR assays were really robust assays tested with a high concordance between different laboratories and assays. The real-time RT-PCR system by Wakeley et al. (2005) in combination with an intercalating dye, and the combined version by Hoffmann and co-workers (2010) showed good sensitivity for the detection of all RABV samples included in this test panel. Furthermore, all used EBLV-specific assays, real-time RT-PCRs as well as conventional RT-PCR systems, were shown to be suitable for a reliable detection of EBLVs. It has to be mentioned that differences were seen in the performance between both the individual RT-PCR systems and the laboratories. Laboratories which used more than one molecular assay for testing the sample panel always concluded a correct sample result. Due to the markedly high genetic diversity of lyssaviruses, the application of different assays in diagnostics is needed to achieve a maximum of diagnostic accuracy. To improve the knowledge about the diagnostic performance proficiency testing at an international level is recommended before using lyssavirus molecular diagnostics e.g. for confirmatory testing

Severe Photo Toxicity Recalled by Docetaxel

Photo-recall phenomenon is a rarely recognized adverse event of chemotherapeutic agents. The physiopathology of this entity is unclear. We have reported a 56-year old breast cancer patient with severe photo toxicity recalled 5 months after the initial sunburn by one course of adjuvant docetaxel treatment. However, being given right diagnosis and proper managements the patient could be able to complete her adjuvant chemotherapy according to the planed time schedule, without any delay. Our case may be explained by the theory that long-lived memory T-cells may remember former skin damage and cross-react with cytotoxic drugs. In addition, we have proved that weekly paclitaxel can still be the drug of option after docetaxel recalled severe photo toxicity

Client perspectives on reclaiming participation after a traumatic spinal cord injury in South Africa

BACKGROUND. The development of rehabilitation services promoting participation in people living with a traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) is of major concern for physical therapists. What the client sees as effective participation, barriers, and facilitators might be different due to their particular context. This study was conducted to gain insight into the experiences of attaining an important outcome in a developing context. OBJECTIVE. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of reclaiming participation in community-dwelling people with TSCI in South Africa. DESIGN. This was an explorative, qualitative study with inductive content analysis. METHODS. Individual semistructured interviews were conducted with 17 adults living with a TSCI in order to explore their experience of participation. The verbatim transcripts were analyzed, and the end result was an overall theme that included 4 emerging categories. RESULTS. The theme “participation possibility” denotes the eventual involvement in life situations. Within this theme, there were 4 categories that emerged as a representation of essential aspects along the continuum of reclaiming participation: (1) dealing with the new self, (2) a journey dominated by obstacles, (3) the catalyst of participation, and (4) becoming an agent. Dealing with and recognizing these intervening conditions seem critical for clients to reconstruct the meaning that is necessary for a broader conception of participation. Limitations. The transferability of these findings to dissimilar contexts may be limited. CONCLUSION. Client perspectives on reclaiming participation after injury affirm the notion of eventual participation, with each person finding strategies to succeed. In order to help clients reclaim participation, health professionals should develop contextually sensitive programs that include peer mentoring and reduce the influence of hindering factors

ATLAS Run 1 searches for direct pair production of third-generation squarks at the Large Hadron Collider

This paper reviews and extends searches for the direct pair production of the scalar supersymmetric partners of the top and bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS collaboration during the LHC Run 1. Most of the analyses use 20 fb1^{-1} of collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV, although in some case an additional 4.7 fb1^{-1} of collision data at s\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV are used. New analyses are introduced to improve the sensitivity to specific regions of the model parameter space. Since no evidence of third-generation squarks is found, exclusion limits are derived by combining several analyses and are presented in both a simplified model framework, assuming simple decay chains, as well as within the context of more elaborate phenomenological supersymmetric models
