First report of moontail seabass, Variola louti along Mangalore coast
The multi-night gillnetters of Mangalore area stay out at sea for 3-4 nights for fishing. One such multi-night gillnetter landed a single specimen of the moontail seabass
Drift gillnet fishery of Goa
The average annual marine fish production
of Goa has been of the order of 87,330 t during
1989-'91 forming about 4% of the all-India
marine fish landings. Trawl, purse seine and drift
gillnet fishing are the important means of
production, contributing to 62.5, 31.1 and 6.4
per cent respectively of the total marine fish
landings of the state. Although the indigeneous
gears such as rampani, yendi and other smaller
shore seines became less popular after the
introduction of purse seine in Goa in early
seventies, the drift gillnet [Magjaaft continued
to be in operation for catching bigger pelagics
because of their greater economic returns. The
mechanisation of traditional craft with out- board
engine in recent years has given further fillip to
this fishery and its emergence as a significant
contributor to the marine fish production of the
state
Heavy landings of mackerel by trawlers at Mangalore Bunder
The Indian mackerel, Rastrelliger kanagurta generally
comprises less than 2% of the total annual trawl catch. But
unusually heavy landings of mackerel, upto one tonne per unit formed nearly 30% of the total trawl catch during May 1995(18th - 27th)
Belonid fish Ablennes hians caught with entrapped plastic bangle, off Mangalore
During our regular observation at Mangalore
Fisheries Harbour, on 6th March 2012, a belonid fish,
Ablennes hians (Valenciennes, 1846) was collected
along with seerfish and mackerel landed by drift
gillnet operated at 36-40 m depth, south-west off
Manjeswara
Gillnet and hook & line fishing off Mangalore
Fishing using gillnets and hooks and line have
been in vogue along Mangalore coast since a
long time. These fishing practices are very
popular and found to be lucrative along
coastal Karnataka. Fishing using gillnets and
hooks and line has so far been operated only

from canoes fitted with outboard engines
(OBM). The fishermen fish for a day or night
or at the most for 2-3 days. However, of late,
mechanized crafts (inboard mechanized)
operating gillnets as well as hooks and line
land their catch at Mangalore Fisheries
Harbour. The crafts used are large and
comparable to the size of trawlers and
purseseiners of Mangalore and have an
endurance to stay out at sea for more than a
month. As this kind of fishing activity is new
to this area, the catch as well as gear details
were studied and a brief account is given
Awareness and Use of Library Resources and Services among the Social Science Researchers: A Case Study
Libraries play a vital role in the promotion of education, training, research and other development programmes by providing wider and deeper access to information for social science researchers. Social science researchers are the end users of information, and hence, various resources have been devised to facilitate social science research outputs. The present study focuses on the level of awareness regarding library resources and facilities, frequency of use, the purpose of using the library services and facilities among the social science researchers of ISEC library, Bangalore. The study reveals that, the majority of the respondents are aware of library collections, such as Books (100%), National Journals (95.97%) and international journals (86.22%) etc., and with regard to library services, 89.12% of the respondents are aware of photocopy services provided by the library 85.55% of the respondents are aware of different reference services available in the library, while opining that these services are important for their research. The regression results show that in respect of researcher category, accessing index journals and thesis/dissertations is statistically significant. The findings of the study also show that the major purpose of using the library services and facilities on the part of researchers is to search for the most relevant information required for their research
Pufferfish Lagocephalus inermis - an emerging fishery along Mangalore coast of Karnataka
L agocephalus inermis (Temminck & Schlegel,
1850) commonly known as smooth blaasop,
belongs to the family Tetraodontidae and order
Tetraodontiformes. This fish was considered as a
menace by fishermen during the previous year (2006)
as it caused damage to other species landed and
the net
High landing of prawn (Metapenaeus dobsoni) by purse seiners at Panaji, Goa
In Goa the purse-seiners are operated mostly in
Panaji, Vasco-da-Gama, Baina, Colva, Cotbona, Betul
and Talpona centres. Out of these, Panaji and Cotbona
are the major purse-seine landing centres, where the
number of purse-seiners exceeds 30 (30-60) and, all
other centres have below 15 numbers. The area of
fishing is northwest of Panaji-Calangute belt in 20-25m
depth zone
Targeted trawl fishery for moontail bullseye, Priacanthus hamrur off Mangalore for surumi production
Moontail bullseye, Priacanthus hamrur has been
forming a part of the trawl fishery off Mangalore,
caught from a depth beyond 100 m ever since
deepsea trawling started off the coast. This is not a
preferred edible species in Karnataka and was not a
species considered for targeted fishery
On a whale shark Rhiniodon typus landed at Malpe, Udupi district, Karnataka

total length and weighing 4 tonnes was accidentally
caught by a purse seiner on 26.12.2000 at a
depth of 20 m off Malpe, about 10 km from Malpe
fishing harbour
