    Get PDF

In the Eyes of the Beholder: Rapid Body Color Change Provides Facultative Crypsis in a Lizard

    Get PDF
Camouflage is an important component of antipredator behaviors. In many species, rapid color change provides plasticity in camouflage as animals move through their environments. As rapid color change can also play a role in other aspects of behavior such as territory defense and courtship, an experimental approach is required to determine color change’s function. In the Anolis genus, rapid color change is a signal in social interactions, but why color changes as anoles move through different microhabitats is not well explored. Anolis aquaticus has a rapid dark-to-light color change with an unknown function. We tested the hypothesis that A. aquaticus uses color change for camouflage in an experimental field study. A. aquaticus were tethered in multiple microhabitats, and standardized images were collected of their body coloration and substrates. We examined if anole color change represented camouflage as perceived by a predator (bird) by creating vision models corrected for their retinal processing. We discuss our results with respect to antipredator strategies, and we use literature on Anolis behavior to interpret our findings in light of evolution.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2021/1062/thumbnail.jp

Hsp104 Gives Clients the Individual Attention They Need

Yeast heat shock protein 104 (Hsp104), the only known eukaryotic disaggregase, remodels both disordered protein aggregates and cross-β sheet amyloids. To handle this diverse clientele, DeSantis et al. report that Hsp104 hexamers use distinct mechanisms—individual subunits are able to dissolve disordered aggregates, but global subunit cooperativity is required to untangle amyloids

“Those Aren’t My Kids”: Secondary Pre-Service Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Students with Disabilities

    Get PDF
Federal mandates to educate students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment began with the passage of PL 94-142. While federal mandates continue to evolve more towards the idea of full inclusion for a large number of special education students, secondary pre-service teacher candidates continue to express mixed feelings about working with students who are dealing with disabilities. Anecdotal as well as empirical evidence suggests that some secondary teachers’ attitudes reveal anxiety about dealing with the behaviors of students with special needs in the regular classroom, and that teachers doubt their individual preparedness to educate students with disabilities in the regular classroom setting (Ajuwon, et al., 2012). In order to gather baseline data concerning secondary pre-service teacher candidate’s attitudes about people dealing with disabilities, we employed the Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons Survey Form O (Yuker, H.E., Block, J.R., and Younng, J.H., 1966). This survey was administered anonymously to our secondary pre-service teacher candidates N=(15). All 15 students completed the survey. The surveys were scored using the method prescribed by its original authors, (Yuker, et al., 1966). The insights from these surveys will begin to inform our teaching practices, and will lead to better instruction for our secondary pre-service teachers

S6E11: How can teaching innovation fuel Maine’s economy?

    Get PDF
Innovation fuels entrepreneurship in Maine. In recent years, several small business startups with novel ideas for products have created and sold them at a global scale. For more than a decade, the University of Maine Foster Center for Innovation has collaborated with students, faculty, staff, startups and established organizations, and offered courses and other resources on how to innovate. It also serves as a hub for commercializing and developing businesses from university research. In the final episode of Season 6 of “The Maine Question,” Renee Kelly, assistant vice president of innovation and economic development at UMaine, discusses how innovation occurs, what makes an entrepreneur, and how fostering both can help Maine grow its economy and retain talented individuals. Two UMaine alumni and startup founders — Amber Boutiette, co-founder of Marin Skincare, and Tyler Delargy, CEO of Real Time Reality — also join the podcast to share what they learned along their journeys to create new goods and enterprises

A Qualitative Examination of Sport Retirement in Former NCAA Division I Athletes

    Get PDF
Statistics indicate that the overwhelming majority of NCAA Division I college athletes will not continue in their sport professionally (NCAA, 2019). Therefore, there is a need to develop a deeper understanding of the variables that influence college athletes’ psychological health and well-being as they transition to retirement. The present study gathered detailed information about 15 former NCAA Division I college athletes’ retirement experiences four to five months post retirement. The findings suggested that the former college athletes had varied retirement experiences ranging from negative to positive. All college athletes who reported having a successful retirement transition described having at least one identified support group, stated they accomplished their athletic goals, indicated they had started pursuing other interests, and identified some positive aspects about their lives since retirement. Alternatively, the college athletes who reported having an unsuccessful retirement transition revealed they did not accomplish most of their athletic goals and struggled to identify any positive aspects about their lives since retirement. The findings of this study highlight the diversity in college athletes’ retirement experiences that can occur. Although there is still much more to ascertain about athlete retirement, this exploration into college athletes’ retirement experiences offers practical implications for athletes, coaches, practitioners, and those who want to provide support for a retiring athlete

Barriers to Family Cancer Communication in Southern Appalachia

    Get PDF
This study examines cultural issues surrounding family cancer communication in Appalachia, providing insight into participants’ communication choices regarding their illness within their families. Stories of 29 female Appalachian cancer survivors from Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia were collected via a mixed methods approach in either a day-long story circle (N=26) or an in-depth interview (N=3). Qualitative content analysis was used to identify unique barriers to family cancer communication in Appalachia. Two barriers emerged: 1) the health of other family members and 2) cancer in a “taboo” area. These findings suggest that Appalachian female cancer survivors struggle with similar issues as survivors outside of the region regarding family cancer communication. However, there appear to be additional barriers to family cancer communication for Appalachian women that may be a result of cultural norms of the region
