Simultaneous measurement of the phase noise on all optical modes of a mode-locked laser
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to simultaneously measure the relative phase noise of all modes of two mode-locked lasers. The method is based on the numerical analysis of a beat note of two lasers with slightly different pulse repetition rates. We carefully analyze and experimentally demonstrate the potential of this method. Compared to other methods, it has the unique advantage that it provides access to correlations of the phases of different mode
Palomar 5 and its Tidal Tails::A Search for New Members in the Tidal Stream
In this paper we present the results of a search for members of the globular
cluster Palomar 5 and its associated tidal tails. The analysis has been
performed using intermediate and low resolution spectroscopy with the AAOmega
spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Based on kinematics, line
strength and photometric information, we identify 39 new red giant branch stars
along 20 of the tails, a larger angular extent than has been
previously studied. We also recover eight previously known tidal tail members.
Within the cluster, we find seven new red giant and one blue horizontal branch
members and confirm a further twelve known red giant members. In total, we
provide velocity data for 67 stars in the cluster and the tidal tails. Using a
maximum likelihood technique, we derive a radial velocity for Pal 5 of km s and a velocity dispersion of km s. We
confirm and extend the linear velocity gradient along the tails of km s deg, with an associated intrinsic velocity dispersion
of km s. Neither the velocity gradient nor the dispersion
change in any significant way with angular distance from the cluster, although
there is some indication that the gradient may be smaller at greater angular
distances in the trailing tail. Our results verify the tails as kinematically
cold structures and will allow further constraints to be placed on the orbit of
Pal 5, ultimately permitting a greater understanding of the shape and extent of

Optical phase noise and carrier-envelope offset noise of mode-locked lasers
The timing jitter, optical phase noise, and carrier-envelope offset (CEO) noise of passively mode-locked lasers are closely related. New key results concern analytical calculations of the quantum noise limits for optical phase noise and CEO noise. Earlier results for the optical phase noise of actively mode-locked lasers are generalized, particularly for application to passively mode-locked lasers. It is found, for example, that mode locking with slow absorbers can lead to optical linewidths far above the Schawlow-Townes limit. Furthermore, mode-locked lasers can at the same time have nearly quantum-limited timing jitter and a strong optical excess phase noise. A feedback timing stabilization via cavity length control can, depending on the situation, reduce or greatly increase the optical phase noise, while not affecting the CEO noise. Besides presenting such findings, the paper also tries to clarify some basic aspects of phase noise in mode-locked laser
Exploiting monitoring data in environmental exposure modelling and risk assessment of pharmaceuticals
In order to establish the environmental impact of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), good information on the level of exposure in surface waters is needed. Exposure concentrations are typically estimated using information on the usage of an API as well as removal rates in the patient, the wastewater system and in surface waters. These input data are often highly variable and difficult to obtain, so model estimates often do not agree with measurements made in the field. In this paper we present an approach which uses inverse modelling to estimate overall removal rates of pharmaceuticals at the catchment scale using a hydrological model as well as prescription and monitoring data for a few representative sites for a country or region. These overall removal rates are then used to model exposure across the broader landscape. Evaluation of this approach for APIs in surface waters across England and Wales showed good agreement between modelled exposure distributions and available monitoring data. Use of the approach, alongside estimates of predicted no-effect concentrations for the 12 study compounds, to assess risk of the APIs across the UK landscape, indicated that, for most of the compounds, risks to aquatic life were low. However, ibuprofen was predicted to pose an unacceptable risk in 49.5% of the river reaches studied. For diclofenac, predicted exposure concentrations were also compared to the Environmental Quality Standard previously proposed by the European Commission and 4.5% of river reaches were predicted to exceed this concentration. While the current study focused on pharmaceuticals, the approach could also be valuable in assessing the risks of other ‘down the drain’ chemicals and could help inform our understanding of the important dissipation processes for pharmaceuticals in the pathway from the patient to ecological receptors

The Stromlo Missing Satellites Survey
The Stromlo Missing Satellites (SMS) program is a critical endeavor to
investigate whether cold dark matter cosmology is flawed in its ability to
describe the matter distribution on galaxy scales or proves itself once again
as a powerful theory to make observational predictions. The project will
deliver unprecedented results on Milky Way satellite numbers, their
distribution and physical properties. It is the deepest, most extended survey
for optically elusive dwarf satellite galaxies to date, covering the entire
20,000 sq deg of the Southern hemisphere. 150TB of CCD images will be analysed
in six photometric bands, 0.5-1.0 mag fainter than SDSS produced by the ANU

Relative timing jitter measurements with an indirect phase comparison method
We propose and demonstrate experimentally a method for the sensitive measurement of the relative timing jitter of two mode-locked lasers, which can be either free-running or timing-synchronized to a common reference oscillator. The method is based on the indirect comparison of the phases of two photodetector outputs, using a microwave oscillator, the noise of which does not affect the results, electronic mixers, and a sampling oscilloscope. We carefully analyze and experimentally demonstrate the potential of this method. Compared to phase detector methods, it has a broader scope of applications and a lower sensitivity to intensity noise. A blood based 12-miRNA signature of Alzheimer disease patients
Background: Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia but the identification of reliable, early and non-invasive biomarkers remains a major challenge. We present a novel miRNA-based signature for detecting AD from blood samples. Results: We apply next-generation sequencing to miRNAs from blood samples of 48 AD patients and 22 unaffected controls, yielding a total of 140 unique mature miRNAs with significantly changed expression levels. Of these, 82 have higher and 58 have lower abundance in AD patient samples. We selected a panel of 12 miRNAs for an RT-qPCR analysis on a larger cohort of 202 samples, comprising not only AD patients and healthy controls but also patients with other CNS illnesses. These included mild cognitive impairment, which is assumed to represent a transitional period before the development of AD, as well as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease, major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. miRNA target enrichment analysis of the selected 12 miRNAs indicates an involvement of miRNAs in nervous system development, neuron projection, neuron projection development and neuron projection morphogenesis. Using this 12-miRNA signature, we differentiate between AD and controls with an accuracy of 93%, a specificity of 95% and a sensitivity of 92%. The differentiation of AD from other neurological diseases is possible with accuracies between 74% and 78%. The differentiation of the other CNS disorders from controls yields even higher accuracies. Conclusions: The data indicate that deregulated miRNAs in blood might be used as biomarkers in the diagnosis of AD or other neurological diseases
Three disks in a row: A two-dimensional scattering analog of the double-well problem
We investigate the scattering off three nonoverlapping disks equidistantly
spaced along a line in the two-dimensional plane with the radii of the outer
disks equal and the radius of the inner disk varied. This system is a
two-dimensional scattering analog to the double-well-potential (bound state)
problem in one dimension. In both systems the symmetry splittings between
symmetric and antisymmetric states or resonances, respectively, have to be
traced back to tunneling effects, as semiclassically the geometrical periodic
orbits have no contact with the vertical symmetry axis. We construct the
leading semiclassical ``creeping'' orbits that are responsible for the symmetry
splitting of the resonances in this system. The collinear three-disk-system is
not only one of the simplest but also one of the most effective systems for
detecting creeping phenomena. While in symmetrically placed n-disk systems
creeping corrections affect the subleading resonances, they here alone
determine the symmetry splitting of the 3-disk resonances in the semiclassical
calculation. It should therefore be considered as a paradigm for the study of
