On the differences between bubble-mediated air-water transfer in freshwater and seawater
Bubble populations and gas transfer velocities were measured in cleaned and surfactant-influenced freshwater and seawater. A nonlinear fitting technique was used to partition the total gas transfer velocity for a gas in each water type into a turbulence- and bubble-mediated fraction. This showed that the bubble-mediated transfer fraction was larger in cleaned freshwater than in cleaned seawater and that the difference was a function of diffusivity and solubility. This was explained by the fact that the bubble measurements showed that bubble plumes in cleaned freshwater had a higher concentration of large bubbles and a lower concentration of small bubbles than the plumes in cleaned seawater. The differences between the behavior of the bubble-mediated gas flux in cleaned freshwater and cleaned seawater show that caution should be used when intercomparing laboratory results from measurements made in different media. These differences also will make parameterizations of bubble-mediated gas exchange developed using freshwater laboratory data difficult to apply directly to oceanic conditions. It was found that adding a surfactant to seawater had minimal impact on the concentration of bubbles in the plumes. Because surfactants decrease the gas flux to the individual bubbles, the similarity in bubble population meant that the addition of surfactant to seawater decreased the bubble-mediated gas flux compared to the flux in cleaned seawater. In contrast, the addition of a surfactant to freshwater increased the concentration of bubbles by over an order of magnitude. This increase in bubble population was large enough to offset the decrease in the flux to the individual bubbles so that the net bubble-mediated gas flux in freshwater increased when surfactant was added. This difference in behavior of the bubble population and bubble-mediated transfer velocity between surfactant-influenced and cleaned waters further complicates interrelating laboratory measurements and applying laboratory results to the ocean
Single-photon emitting diode in silicon carbide
Electrically driven single-photon emitting devices have immediate
applications in quantum cryptography, quantum computation and single-photon
metrology. Mature device fabrication protocols and the recent observations of
single defect systems with quantum functionalities make silicon carbide (SiC)
an ideal material to build such devices. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication
of bright single photon emitting diodes. The electrically driven emitters
display fully polarized output, superior photon statistics (with a count rate
of 300 kHz), and stability in both continuous and pulsed modes, all at room
temperature. The atomic origin of the single photon source is proposed. These
results provide a foundation for the large scale integration of single photon
sources into a broad range of applications, such as quantum cryptography or

Management factors associated with bovine respiratory disease in preweaned calves on California dairies: The BRD 100 study.
The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine how management practices on California dairies may be associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in preweaned calves. A convenience sample of 100 dairies throughout California, providing a study population of 4,636 calves, were visited between May 2014 and April 2016. During each farm visit, in-person interviews with the herd manager or calf caretaker were conducted to collect information about herd demographics, maternity pen, colostrum and calf management, herd vaccinations, and dust abatement. A random sample of preweaned calves was identified and evaluated for the presence of BRD using a standardized tool. A survey-adjusted generalized linear mixed model with a logit link function was fitted with calf as the unit of analysis and dairy as the random effect. Mean study herd size (±SE) was 1,718 (±189.9) cows. Survey-adjusted estimates of breed types in the sample were 81.6% (±0.6) Holstein, 13.1% (±0.4) Jersey, and 5.3% (±0.5) crossbred or other purebred breeds, and calf sex proportions were 73.8% (±1.0) female and 26.2% (±1.0) male. Overall survey-adjusted BRD prevalence in the study herds was 6.91% (±0.69). Housing factors positively associated with BRD were metal hutches compared with wood hutches [odds ratio (OR) = 11.19; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.80-44.78], calf-to-calf contact in calves >75 d of age (OR = 9.95, 95% CI = 1.50-65.86), feeding Holstein calves <2.84 L of milk or replacer per day (OR = 7.16, 95% CI = 1.23-41.68), and lagoon water used for flushing manure under hutches compared with no flush (OR = 12.06, 95% CI = 1.93-75.47). Providing extra shade over hutches (OR = 0.08; 95% CI = 0.02-0.37), feeding calves at least 90% saleable milk (OR = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.13-0.54) or pasteurized milk (OR = 0.10; 95% CI = 0.03-0.36), and feeding >5.68 L of milk or replacer per day to Jersey calves (OR = 0.04; 95% CI = 0.01-0.28) were negatively associated with BRD. Our study identified management practices on California dairies with variability and that may contribute to differences in BRD prevalence, which will be incorporated into a risk-assessment tool to control and prevent BRD in preweaned dairy calves
Histopathological study of prostatic lesions in correlation with serum prostate specific antigen levels in elderly men
Background: Prostatic lesions are common among elderly men with urinary complaints. Variety of prostatic lesions range from inflammatory, benign to malignant pathologies. The Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is secreted by glandular epithelium of prostate shows raised serum levels in these pathologies. Usually significant rise is commonly associated with Prostatic adenocarcinomas (PCa) with exceptions.Methods: In this retrospective study, total 63 diagnosed cases of prostatic lesions over a one-year period for which serum PSA levels were available, were selected. Cases without serum PSA levels & inadequate biopsies were excluded. Histological diagnosis of prostatic lesions reconfirmed and its correlation with serum PSA was done.Results: Study included patients with mean age 67.84 years (range: 48-60) at the time of diagnosis. Benign lesions were commonest prostatic lesions accounting for total 54 cases (85.71%) out of which 38 were of Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), 14 cases of BPH with prostatitis while single case each for BPH with granulomatous prostatitis and basal cell hyperplasia. Mean PSA value for benign lesions was 6.57 ng/ml. Total 8 were malignant which included 7 (11.11%) PCa while single (1.59%) case of metastatic transitional cell carcinoma. Mean PSA for PCa were 35.05 ng/ml. Single case (1.59%) of high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia also detected.Conclusion: Common age group at the time of presentation of prostatic pathologies is 60-70 years. The most common prostatic lesions are benign predominantly BPH. PCa are commonest malignancies. Elevated PSA levels >20 ng/ml are commonly observed in PCa. However lower or normal values don’t rule out PCa
Effect of pre-treatment with catecholamines on cold preservation and ischemia/reperfusion-injury in rats
Treatment of organ donors with catecholamines reduces acute rejection episodes and improves long-term graft survival after renal transplantation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of catecholamine pre-treatment on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)- and cold preservation injury in rat kidneys. I/R-injury was induced by clamping the left kidney vessels for 60 min along with a contralateral nephrectomy. Cold preservation injury was induced by storage of the kidneys for 24 h at +4°C in University of Wisconsin solution, followed by syngeneic transplantation. Rats were pre-treated with either dopamine (DA), dobutamine (DB), or norepinephrine (2, 5, and 10 μg/kg/min, each group) intravenously via an osmotic minipump for 24 h before I/R- and cold preservation injury. Pre-treatment with DA (2 or 5 μg/kg/min) and DB (5 μg/kg/min) improved recovery of renal function after I/R-injury and dose dependently reduced mononuclear and major histocompatibility complex class II-positive cells infiltrating the kidney after I/R-injury. One day after I/R-injury, upregulation of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β 1 and 2 and phosphorylation of p42/p44 mitogen-activated protein kinases was observed in kidneys of animals treated with DA or DB. DA (5 μg/kg/min) and DB (5 μg/kg/min) pre-treatment reduced endothelial cell damage after 24 h of cold preservation. Only DA pre-treatment improved renal function and reduced renal inflammation after 24 h of cold preservation and syngeneic transplantation. Our results demonstrate a protective effect of pre-treatment with catecholamines on renal inflammation and function after I/R- or cold preservation injury. This could help to explain the potent organoprotective effects of catecholamine pre-treatment observed in human kidney transplantation
Optical Properties of Deep Ice at the South Pole - Absorption
We discuss recent measurements of the wavelength-dependent absorption
coefficients in deep South Pole ice. The method uses transit time distributions
of pulses from a variable-frequency laser sent between emitters and receivers
embedded in the ice. At depths of 800 to 1000 m scattering is dominated by
residual air bubbles, whereas absorption occurs both in ice itself and in
insoluble impurities. The absorption coefficient increases approximately
exponentially with wavelength in the measured interval 410 to 610 nm. At the
shortest wavelength our value is about a factor 20 below previous values
obtained for laboratory ice and lake ice; with increasing wavelength the
discrepancy with previous measurements decreases. At around 415 to 500 nm the
experimental uncertainties are small enough for us to resolve an extrinsic
contribution to absorption in ice: submicron dust particles contribute by an
amount that increases with depth and corresponds well with the expected
increase seen near the Last Glacial Maximum in Vostok and Dome C ice cores. The
laser pulse method allows remote mapping of gross structure in dust

The Highest Energy Neutrinos
Measurements of the arrival directions of cosmic rays have not revealed their
sources. High energy neutrino telescopes attempt to resolve the problem by
detecting neutrinos whose directions are not scrambled by magnetic fields. The
key issue is whether the neutrino flux produced in cosmic ray accelerators is
detectable. It is believed that the answer is affirmative, both for the
galactic and extragalactic sources, provided the detector has kilometer-scale
dimensions. We revisit the case for kilometer-scale neutrino detectors in a
model-independent way by focussing on the energetics of the sources. The real
breakthrough though has not been on the theory but on the technology front: the
considerable technical hurdles to build such detectors have been overcome.
Where extragalactic cosmic rays are concerned an alternative method to probe
the accelerators consists in studying the arrival directions of neutrinos
produced in interactions with the microwave background near the source, i.e.
within a GZK radius. Their flux is calculable within large ambiguities but, in
any case, low. It is therefore likely that detectors that are larger yet by
several orders of magnitudes are required. These exploit novel techniques, such
as detecting the secondary radiation at radio wavelengths emitted by neutrino

Depletion of nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond via hydrogen passivation
We show a marked reduction in the emission from nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color
centers in single crystal diamond due to exposure of the diamond to hydrogen
plasmas ranging from 700{\deg}C to 1000{\deg}C. Significant fluorescence
reduction was observed beneath the exposed surface to at least 80mm depth after
~10 minutes, and did not recover after post-annealing in vacuum for seven hours
at 1100{\deg}C. We attribute the fluorescence reduction to the formation of NVH
centers by the plasma induced diffusion of hydrogen. These results have
important implications for the formation of nitrogen-vacancy centers for
quantum applications, and inform our understanding of the conversion of
nitrogen-vacancy to NVH, whilst also providing the first experimental evidence
of long range hydrogen diffusion through intrinsic high-purity diamond

Limits on models of the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays based on topological defects

Please see the description link below for details.Using the propagation of ultrahigh energy nucleons, photons, and electrons in the universal radiation backgrounds, we obtain limits on the luminosity of topological defect scenarios for the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays. The limits are set as a function of the mass of the X particles emitted by the cosmic strings or other defects, the cosmological evolution of the topological defects, and the strength of the extragalactic magnetic fields. The existing data on the cosmic ray spectrum and on the isotropic 100 MeV gamma-ray background limit significantly the parameter space in which topological defects can generate the flux of the highest energy cosmic rays, and rule out models with the standard X-particle mass of 10¹⁶GeV and higher.R.
