An embodied belonging
Until the publication of the DSM-V in 2013, amenorrhea was one of the four criteria that comprised anorexia nervosa. Diagnostically, amenorrhea played a definitional role, dividing the âstrictlyâ anorexic from their âsubthresholdâ, menstruating peers; however, the implications that menstrual cessation, and menstruation itself, held for the lived realities and identities of women with anorexia remain under-explored. In this article, I examine the positioning of menstruation and amenorrhea in the narratives of Israeli women diagnosed with eating disorders during the eras of the DSM-IV and DSM-IV-TR. I find that the participantsâ narrative uses of amenorrhea mirrored, and at times explicitly engaged with, the official diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. Notably, although the participants invoked amenorrhea as a defining sign of illness, they did not cast menstruation as a sign of health rather, they spoke of their menstrual periods as contradicting their anorexic-identified selves. Amenorrhea, then, emerged as central in the embodied making of anorexic subjectivities
Planting a seed - child health care nursesâ perceptions of speaking to parents about overweight and obesity : a qualitative study within the STOP project
Background
Nurses in child health care (CHC) centers in Sweden play a key role in the early detection and management of childhood overweight/obesity, through meeting families early, regularly and over many years. However, research focusing on CHC nursesâ perceptions of their role in childhood overweight/obesity management is scarce. As part of the EU-funded project âScience and Technology in childhood Obesity Policyâ (STOP), this study examines CHC nursesâ perceptions of speaking to parents about childrenâs overweight/obesity and of their role in referring children to treatment for overweight/obesity.
Methods
All registered CHC nurses in Stockholm County (nâ=â442) received an email invitation letter explaining the study. Individual face-to-face visits (nâ=â15) in selected centers, and phone calls (nâ=â24) to nurses working in these centres were also conducted. In total, 17 CHC nurses (all female, average work experience 6.7âyears (SDâ±â4.9âyears)) from 10 municipalities (including four of the top five municipalities with the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity) in Stockholm County were interviewed. The interviews were conducted by phone, transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis.
Results
Two main themes were developed through the analysis: 1) The relationship between the nurse and the parent and 2) Glitch in the system. Under the first theme, nurses reported that weight-related discussions were facilitated by building and maintaining trust with parents. However, nurses also said they were reluctant to address childrenâs weights if this could compromise parentsâ trust. Under the second theme, nurses highlighted several organizational barriers to addressing a childâs weight with parents, including insufficient cooperation with other healthcare providers and limited time for visits. Nurses also identified lack of sufficient knowledge about what to offer the family and lack of confidence in their communication skills as additional barriers.
Conclusions
We found that pediatric nurses perceive relational and organizational factors as barriers to address childhood obesity with parents. To improve care, it is necessary to provide nurses with continuing education about obesity and communication skills and organizational support to improve communication within the healthcare system
Mobile Activism, Material Imaginings, and the Ethics of the Edible: Framing Political Engagement through the Buycott App
In this article, we explore the discursive constructions of Buycott, a free mobile app that provides a platform for user-generated ethical consumption campaigns. Unlike other ethical consumption apps, Buycottâs mode of knowledge production positions the app itself as neutral, with app users generating activist campaigns and providing both data and judgment. Although Buycott is not a dedicated food activism app, food features centrally in its campaigns, and the app seems to provide a mobile means of extending, and perhaps expanding, alternative food network (AFN) action across geographies and constituencies. Thus, as a case study, Buycott unveils contemporary possibilities for citizen participation and the formation of activist consumer communities, both local and trans-national, through mobile technologies. Our analysis shows, however, that despite the appâs user-generated format, the forms of activism it enables are constrained by the appâs binary construction of action as non/consumption and its guiding âmissionâ of âvoting with your walletâ. Grounded in texts concerning Buycottâs two largest campaigns (Demand GMO Labeling and Long live Palestine boycott Israel), our analysis delineates how Buycott, its campaigns, and its modes of action take shape in user, media, and app developer discourses. We find that, as discursively framed, Buycott campaigns are commodity-centric, invoking an âethics of careâ to be enacted by atomized consumers, in corporate spaces and through mainstream, barcode-bearing, retail products. In user discourses, this corporate spatiality translates into the imagined materializing of issues in products, investing commodities with the substance of an otherwise ethereal cause. This individualized, commodity-centric activism reinforces tenets of the neoliberal market, ultimately turning individual users into consumers not only of products, but also of the app itself. Thus, we suggest, the activist habitus constructed through Buycott is a neoliberal, consumer habitus
The digital labor of ethical food consumption : a new research agenda for studying everyday food digitalization
This paper explores how consumersâ ethical food consumption practices, mediated by mobile phone applications (apps), are transformed into digital data. Based on a review of studies on the digitalization of ethical consumption practices and food apps, we find that previous research, while valuable, fails to acknowledge and critically examine the digital labor required to perform digitalized ethical food consumption. In this paper, we call for research on how digital labor underlies the digitalization of ethical food consumption and develop a conceptual framework that supports this research agenda. Our proposed conceptual framework builds on three interconnected analytical conceptsâdatafication, affordances and digital laborâthat enable the study of digital labor as an infrastructural element of digitalized food consumption. We illustrate our conceptual framework through our previous research concerning Buycott, a US-based mobile app whose stated aim is to facilitate consumersâ ethical purchasing decisions. Using the walkthrough method, we consider how the Buycott app engages user-generated data and what implications this holds for consumers. The appâs infrastructure, we suggest, connects ethical consumption and digital labor. A richer understanding of the digital food economy, we propose, enables social scientists not only to elucidate how consumers engage in digital labor, but also to contribute to the development of new data governance structures in the digital food economy. We therefore call for social scientists interested in food, consumption and the digital economy to contribute to a new research agenda for studying everyday food digitalization by empirically examining how ethical consumption apps implicate ethical consumersâ work
Material environments and the shaping of anorexic embodiment : towards a materialist account of eating disorders
Anorexia nervosa is a paradoxical disorder, regarded across disciplines as a body project and yet also an illness of disembodied subjectivity. This overlooks the role that material environments-including objects and spaces-play in producing embodied experiences of anorexia both within and outside treatment. To address this gap, this paper draws together two ethnographic studies of anorexia to explore the shared themes unearthed by research participants' engagements with objects that move across boundaries between treatment spaces and everyday lives. Demonstrating how the anorexic body is at once both phenomenologically lived and socio-medically constituted, we argue that an attention to materiality is crucial to understanding lived experiences. A materialist account of anorexia extends the literature on treatment resistance in eating disorders and offers a reconceptualisation of 'the body in treatment', showing how  objects and spaces shape, maintain, and even 'trigger' anorexia. Therefore, against the background of the high rates of relapse in eating disorders, this analysis calls for consideration of how interventions can better take account of eating disordered embodiment as shaped by material environments
Becoming fit to be a mother:class, learning, and redemption in Supersize vs Superskinny
The UK Channel Four reality television programmes Supersize vs Superskinny and Supersize vs Superskinny: Kids present their viewers with a stark, and supposedly educative, reforming of food practices. Pairing participants defined as underweight with others defined as morbidly obese, the programmes are premised on a so-called âdiet swapâ, in which participants consume their foilsâ (either meagre or excessive) meals in order to face the supposed follies of their ways. While the programmes include both male and female participants, in-depth content analysis reveals that their televisual storytelling has gendered underpinnings, centred on the theme of âfitnessâ to mother. Notably, this âfitnessâ, as the programmes frame it, entails reforming womenâs food consumption: from âperilousâ working-class eating and feeding practices, which âthreatenâ womenâs and childrenâs bodies with obesity, to âappropriateâ middle class tastes and choices, poised to foster trans-generational wellbeing. Thus, presented as âpublic pedagogyâ (Rich, 2011) that implicates both participant and viewer, Supersize vs Superskinny evokes classed abjection and shame to cast population obesity as the outcome of maternal âfailingsâ. We argue, then, that at the core of Supersize vs Superskinnyâs focus on âbalanced dietsâ lies a neoliberal prescription for womenâs moral citizenship as anchored in upwardly mobile, middle classed, responsibilized motherhood
Perceptions of Contextual Stressors in Physical Education. A Qualitative Case Study
Background: Daily stressors have a significant impact on students' educational outcomes. However, research on students perceived and common contextual stressors in physical education (PE) lessons is limited.
Purpose: To identify potential contextual stressors in PE contexts and what students perceive as stressors.
Participants: Ninth-grade students (age 14-15) and their PE teachers recruited from three classes in one lower secondary school in Norway.
Research Design: This qualitative case study used data generated from descriptive field notes from participant observations in PE lessons, formal interviews and informal conversations with PE teachers, focus group and individual interviews with students, and a supplementary survey using the TurningPoint student response system. Conversations were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2006; Tolmie et al., 2011; Braun et al., 2019) and the NVivo 12 Pro analysis software. The survey was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.
Findings: This study supports and expands previous research exploring students' stressors in PE and highlights the volume and variety of potential stressors in PE contexts. The findings shed light on certain similarities and differences that may exist between students of different genders and grades and with different past physical activity experiences. In the present study, spectators, in addition to difficult tasks and low self-efficacy, seemed particularly stressful for girls. This article presents nuances revealed by various qualitative approaches and a supplementary survey.
Conclusion: Students in this study experience a multitude of stressors during PE lessons. These include stressors in the teaching, physical, and social environments, as well as personal factors. The stressors experienced depend on the situation, the lesson content, the parties involved, students' past experiences, and their appraisal of these stressors. In our sample, girls seemed to be more vulnerable to contextual stressors in PE than boys.publishedVersio
Studentsâ perceptions of visibility in physical education
The purpose of this study is to explore studentsâ perceptions of visibility in physical education (PE) using a single cumulative case study approach. Data were generated from the descriptive field notes of seven participant observations (nâ=â77), individual semi-structured interviews (nâ=â13) and five focus group interviews (nâ=â18) with ninth-grade students (ages 14â15 years) from three classes in a public lower secondary school in Norway. The findings show that students perceive visibility differently depending on the context; some students like being visible in PE, while others dread it. Perceptions change rapidly and are situation-specific, influenced by the lesson content, the way the teacher facilitates the lessons, self-perception shaped by past experiences, the presence, actions, and attitudes of fellow students, body pressure and societal body ideals. The findings actualise the relevance of the transaction model of stress and coping ( Lazarus and Folkman, 1984) in determining when visibility in PE is and is not perceived as stressful. Consequently, the organization of the PE environment benefits from these insights.publishedVersio
Professional development policy and politics across international contexts: From mutuality to measurability?
This article reveals how educational policies and policy contexts in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Australia establish the circumstances which enable and constrain individual and collective teacher professional development as praxis. We provide insights into existing partnerships between universities and schools, and, municipalities and the state as vehicles for professional development, and the way in which policy contexts have shaped and reshaped these relationships. We also consider the resonances, and points of tension, across and within different national policy settings, to assist us to understand, and to productively inform, policy-making within and across national contexts. We conclude by arguing that while professional development policies within and across international contexts are productive of teachersâ collective focus upon student learning â a form of âmutualityâ â they increasingly serve as overarching practices which contribute to the development of educational practices reflective of national and international pressure to account for performance â a concern for âmeasurabilityâ. © 2010 Pedagogy, Culture & Society
