Ар-деко. Поэтика отравы

The many-sidedness of the Art Deco phenomenon attracts more and more attention. The term itself is polemical, as well as its analogues, the acceptable extension of the “range” of this style, its extension to phenomena and monuments of different years and regions. The author tries to introduce readers to the atmosphere of Art Deco in its “core” manifestations, first of all, in the American architecture and design of the 1920-1940s. As the author believes, without such exposure, we can understand neither the meaning of the phenomenon, nor its lessons for our time, which is increasingly tending to something like this.Многогранность феномена ар-деко привлекает к нему все более пристальный интерес. Дискуссионен сам термин, его аналоги, допустимая мера расширения «ареала» этого стиля, распространения его на явления и памятники различных лет и регионов. This essay considers L. Kahn’s famous expression, his question addressed to his colleagues: “What does the window want to be?”. Kahn has a special status in architecture of the XXth century: he can be considered one of the most outstanding spokesmen for the century’s architectural self-consciousness, with all its striking visualization, toughness and inflexibility, as well as its hidden cunning, tendency towards manipulation and suggestion. In the diversity of meanings of the word ‘conversion’ one can notice new horizons of transformation of the activity, including architectural and design activity. To do this, it is necessary to clear the word of additional meanings and to comprehend its depth. While sharing Konstantin Lidin’s idea of the expected transformation of the architectural profession towards preservation of social-economic and cultural-environmental values, the author offers to discuss the boundaries and possibilities of this transformation.За разнообразием смыслов слова «конверсия» сегодня вновь становится возможно углядеть новые горизонты трансформации деятельности, в т. ч. – архитектурной и проектировочной, но для этого необходимо очистить слово от привнесенных смыслов и постичь его глубину. Immobility and mobility in architecture

Stability that has been embodied by architecture for centuries now faces the challenges of total dynamism. The tendencies of artification of the world, including those in the previously unthinkable fields, have gained momentum. The author believes that today, architecture is facing the demand to make a new historical choice: to restore itself as a bearer of enduring values of habitat or to dissolve together with the whole civilization in the accelerating stream of uncontrollable changes. The article considers a “healthy city” as a limited concept, which is irrelevant to the tasks of urban development. It features the conditions in the field of knowledge and ideas, where the idea of the “healthy city” can turn into another manipulation tool.
