Prague's Emission Fourier Transform Microwave Spectrometer - Design and Preliminary Results

    Get PDF
The design, performance and operation of the high resolution microwave spectrometer are described. The spectrometer is based on the Fabry-Perot resonator supplemented by a pulsed supersonic nozzle for adiabatic cooling of the sample. The spectrometer’s high sensitivity and resolution are demonstrated by several examples

Effectiveness of Human Hair, BGR, and a Mixture of Blood Meal and Peppercorns in Reducing Deer Damage to Young Apple Trees

We evaluated the ability of three repellents [human hair, Big Game Repellent (BGR), and a mixture of blood meal and peppercorns] to reduce deer damage on young apple trees in two Connecticut orchards. Most of the deer damage consisted of winter browsing on dormant apple buds. Little browsing occurred on leaves or buds during the growing season and only a few cases of pre-rut rubbing of trees were observed. In one orchard, buds were browsed during the winter on 52% of the untreated control trees, 45% of the trees sprayed with BGR, and 40% of the trees containing a hair ball. By winter\u27s end, the severity of deer browsing (number of buds browsed per tree) was significantly less on trees with hair balls (0.5) than on control trees (1.1), but there was no significant difference between control trees and BGR-treated trees (0.8). In two fields at another apple orchard, deer browsed 83% and 89% of the control trees, 61% of the trees containing a hair ball and 55% of the trees with a bag of blood meal and peppercorns. The differences between the control and the treated trees were statistically significant. The number of browsed buds per tree was also significantly higher on control trees (2.9) than on trees with hair balls (1.1) or trees with bags containing a mixture of blood meal and peppercorns (1.2)

Background: Breastfeeding (BF) is best food source for infants to improve child health, maternal health and mother-infant bonding. We aimed to assess the effect of antenatal education in increasing the frequency and duration of breast feeding and helpful in increasing the intimacy of mother and child and further improve the maternal and fetal outcomes. Methods: It is a prospective, randomized and interventional study held at tertiary care hospital for 18 months on 200 pregnant females. The counselled group (n=100) received one session of antenatal breastfeeding education, while the non-counselled group received routine antenatal obstetric care with no special intervention applied. Results: It was observed that the mean age and education of the mothers in the counselled as well as non-counselled group was statistically similar. The mean ANC visits, early initiation of BF, mean BSES and exclusive BF, were significantly higher in the counselled group as compared to non-counselled group. Complications are more in non-counselled group mothers. Conclusions: This study results demonstrate that a meaningful breastfeeding support and clinical health education can improve exclusive BF and BF self-efficacy with lowers the risk of complications

Peran Unicef dalam Proses Disarmament, Demobilization, Reintegration Prajurit Anak Pasca Perang Sipil di Chad

This research is inspired by the civil war that took place in Chad in 2005 until 2010. This war caused humanitarian impacts, one of which is the recruitment of child soldiers. The child soldiers were recruited by both the government and the opposition armed forces. The recruitment of child soldiers is listed as a war crime as explained in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which clearly explains that children under 18 years of age are not allowed to be involved directly in wars as soldiers or combatants. To mitigate and prevent this issue from happening again, the children who are already in the armed forces have to be released through Disarmament Demobilization Reintegration (DDR) process. Unfortunately, Chadian government was unable to handle this by itself since the conflict was still ongoing in that country, and needed help from an organization or institution to go through the DDR process. To explain this situation, neoliberal institutionalism is best suited since its main paradigm is that a country can solve its problem by seeking help from a certain institution, be it old or new. UNICEF, as the only UN body that focuses on children, helped the government of Chad with the DDR process by making an agreement upon this issue. Through this process, UNICEF was able to help advocating the release of more than 1000 child soldiers, help them through the transition and adaptation phase, provide them with accessible healthcare as well as education, and identify the children before they were reintegrated with their families

Role of chromodomain helicase DNA-binding protein 2 in DNA damage response signaling and tumorigenesis.

    Get PDF
The chromodomain helicase DNA-binding proteins (CHDs) are known to affect transcription through their ability to remodel chromatin and modulate histone deacetylation. In an effort to understand the functional role of the CHD2 in mammals, we have generated a Chd2 mutant mouse model. Remarkably, the Chd2 protein appears to play a critical role in the development, hematopoiesis and tumor suppression. The Chd2 heterozygous mutant mice exhibit increased extramedullary hematopoiesis and susceptibility to lymphomas. At the cellular level, Chd2 mutants are defective in hematopoietic stem cell differentiation, accumulate higher levels of the chromatin-associated DNA damage response mediator, cH2AX, and exhibit an aberrant DNA damage response after X-ray irradiation. Our data suggest a direct role for the chromatin remodeling protein in DNA damage signaling and genome stability maintenance

Comparison Between Different Herbal Formulations of Roses and Their Therapeutic Potential

Roses are one of the most popular flowers in the world, not only because of their beauty but also because they have medicinal properties. Drugs developed from roses must be support from various parties. Roses have active components that can be used to improve public health, such as anthocyanins, tannins and other active compounds. Making the right rose water herbal mixtures will help filter out the active substances according to the expected therapeutic effect. The manufacture of herbal mixtures of roses can vary, namely, infusions, extracts and rose oil. These three variations require different procedures. The three herbal formulations can provide an initial condition of the content of the active substances in the roses. The results of the rose infusion gave a red color in a short time, while the maceration of the extract with ethyl alcohol, methanol and hexsan gave a varied color appearance, while the identification of rose oil using water distillation did not show any filtered oil. The comparison of the three preparations shows that the herbal formulations can be done in a simple way and the formulation that gives the best results is rose water infusions that produces rose water. Keywords: herbal preparation, rose infusion, rose oil, rose extrac
