Coherent versus coincidence detection of gravitational wave signals from compact inspiraling binaries
We compare two multi-detector detection strategies, namely, the coincidence
and the coherent, for the detection of spinless inspiraling compact binary
gravitational wave signals. The coincident strategy treats the detectors as if
they are isolated - compares individual detector statistics with their
respective thresholds while the coherent strategy combines the detector network
data {\it phase coherently} to obtain a single detection statistic which is
then compared with a single threshold. In the case of geographically separated
detectors, we also consider an {\it enhanced} coincidence strategy because the
usual (naive) coincidence strategy yields poor results for misaligned
detectors. For simplicity, we consider detector pairs having the same power
spectral density of noise, as that of initial LIGO and also assume the noise to
be stationary and Gaussian. We compare the performances of the methods by
plotting the \emph{receiver operating characteristic} (ROC) for the two
strategies. A single astrophysical source as well as a distribution of sources
is considered. We find that the coherent strategy performs better than the two
coincident strategies under the assumptions of stationary Gaussian detector
noise.Comment: Based on the presentation at the 1st Galileo Xu Guangqi conference,

A new method of evaluating the side wall interference effect on airfoil angle of attack by suction from the side walls
A quantitative evaluation method of the suction effect from a suction plate on side walls is explained. It is found from wind tunnel tests that the wall interference is basically described by the summation form of wall interferences in the case of two dimensional flow and the interference of side walls
Preliminary experimental results of gas recycling subsystems except carbon dioxide concentration
Oxygen concentration and separation is an essential factor for air recycling in a controlled ecological life support system (CELSS). Furthermore, if the value of the plant assimilatory quotient is not coincident with that of the animal respiratory quotient, the recovery of oxygen from the concentrated CO2 through chemical methods will become necessary to balance the gas contents in a CELSS. Therefore, oxygen concentration and separation equipment using Salcomine and O2 recovery equipment, such as Sabatier and Bosch reactors, were experimentally developed and tested
Role of proton irradiation and relative air humidity on iron corrosion
This paper presents a study of the effects of proton irradiation on iron
corrosion. Since it is known that in humid atmospheres, iron corrosion is
enhanced by the double influence of air and humidity, we studied the iron
corrosion under irradiation with a 45% relative humidity. Three proton beam
intensities (5, 10 and 20 nA) were used. To characterise the corrosion layer,
we used ion beam methods (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS), Elastic
Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA)) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The
corrosion kinetics are plotted for each proton flux. A diffusion model of the
oxidant species is proposed, taking into account the fact that the flux through
the surface is dependent on the kinetic factor K. This model provides evidence
for the dependence of the diffusion coefficient, D, and the kinetic factor, K,
on the proton beam intensity. Comparison of the values for D with the diffusion
coefficients for thermal oxygen diffusion in iron at 300 K suggests an
enhancement due to irradiation of 6 orders of magnitude
Synthesis of Polyhedral Magnetite Particles by Hydrothermal Process Under High Pressure Condition
Magnetite particles were successfully generated by hydrothermal synthesis using water at subcritical conditions. By changing the temperature and pressure at subcritical water conditions, the thermodynamics and transport properties of the water can be controlled, thus enabling to manage the way of crystal formation, morphology, and particle size. In this work, the experiments were carried out at temperatures of 250 °C and 290 °C and a pressure of 10 MPa with a reactor made of SUS 316 in a batch system. The synthesized particles were dried in vacuum condition and characterized by SEM and XRD. The XRD patterns showed that magnetite particles were dominantly formed in the particle products with a black color. The results showed that the magnetite particles formed had diameters of around 60 nm in all experiments with irregular polyhedral shaped morphologies
Effects of substrate differences on water availability for Arctic lichens during the snow-free summers in the High Arctic glacier foreland
AbstractWe used observational and experimental analyses to investigate the photosynthetic activity and water relationships of five lichen species attached to different substrates in a glacier foreland in the High Arctic, Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard (79°N) during the snow-free season in 2009 and 2010. After the rains ceased, lichens and their attached substrates quickly dried, whereas photosynthetic activity in the lichens decreased gradually. The in situ photosynthetic activity was estimated based on the relative electron transportation rate (rETR) in four fruticose lichens: Cetrariella delisei, Flavocetraria nivalis, Cladonia arbuscula ssp. mitis, and Cladonia pleurota. The rETR approached zero around noon, although the crustose lichen Ochrolechia frigida grown on biological soil crust (BSC) could acquire water from the BSC and retain its WC to perform positive photosynthesis. The light-rETR relationship curves of the five well-watered lichens were characterized into two types: shade-adapted with photoinhibition for the fruticose lichens, and light-adapted with no photoinhibition for O. frigida. The maximum rETR was expected to occur when they could acquire water from the surrounding air or from substrates during the desiccation period. Our results suggest that different species of Arctic lichens have different water availabilities due to their substrates and/or morphological characteristics, which affect their photosynthetic active periods during the summer
Experimental Signature of Medium Modifications for rho and omega Mesons in the 12 GeV p + A Reactions
The invariant mass spectra of e+e- pairs produced in 12-GeV proton-induced
nuclear reactions are measured at the KEK Proton-Synchrotron. On the low-mass
side of the omega meson peak, a significant enhancement over the known hadronic
sources has been observed. The mass spectra, including the excess, are well
reproduced by a model that takes into account the density dependence of the
vector meson mass modification, as theoretically predicted.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Version accepted for Physical Review Lette
Detecting gravitational waves from inspiraling binaries with a network of detectors : coherent versus coincident strategies
We compare two strategies of multi-detector detection of compact binary
inspiral signals, namely, the coincidence and the coherent. For simplicity we
consider here two identical detectors having the same power spectral density of
noise, that of initial LIGO, located in the same place and having the same
orientation. We consider the cases of independent noise as well as that of
correlated noise. The coincident strategy involves separately making two
candidate event lists, one for each detector, and from these choosing those
pairs of events from the two lists which lie within a suitable parameter
window, which then are called as coincidence detections. The coherent strategy
on the other hand involves combining the data phase coherently, so as to obtain
a single network statistic which is then compared with a single threshold. Here
we attempt to shed light on the question as to which strategy is better. We
compare the performances of the two methods by plotting the Receiver Operating
Characteristics (ROC) for the two strategies. Several of the results are
obtained analytically in order to gain insight. Further we perform numerical
simulations in order to determine certain parameters in the analytic formulae
and thus obtain the final complete results. We consider here several cases from
the relatively simple to the astrophysically more relevant in order to
establish our results. The bottom line is that the coherent strategy although
more computationally expensive in general than the coincidence strategy, is
superior to the coincidence strategy - considerably less false dismissal
probability for the same false alarm probability in the viable false alarm
regime.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, typo correcte
