    A short note on spin pumping theory with Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation under quantum fluctuation; necessity for quantization of localized spin

    We would like to point out the blind spots of the approach combining the spin pumping theory proposed by Tserkovnyak et al. with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation; this method has been widely used for interpreting vast experimental results. The essence of the spin pumping effect is the quantum fluctuation. Thus, localized spin degrees of freedom should be quantized, i.e. be treated as magnons not as classical variables. Consequently, the precessing ferromagnet can be regarded as a magnon battery. This point of view will be useful for further progress of spintronics.Comment: 10pages, 1 figure.     Design of a loop-gap resonator with bimodal uniform fields using finite element analysis

    The loop-gap resonator (LGR) was originally developed to provide a uniform microwave magnetic field on a sample for electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. The LGR is composed of one or more loops and gaps acting as inductances and capacitances respectively. Typical LGR designs produce a uniform field on a sample at a single resonant frequency, but for certain experiments it is necessary to study the response of a material to uniform fields at multiple frequencies applied simultaneously. In this work we develop an empirical design procedure using finite element method calculations to design an asymmetric loop-gap resonator with uniform fields at two frequencies in the same sample volume and analyze the field uniformity, frequency tunability and filling factors, providing comparison to a manufactured device

    Automation of berthing maneuvers in shipping is a pressing issue as the berthing maneuver is one of the most stressful tasks seafarers undertake. Berthing control problems are often tackled via tracking a predefined trajectory or path. Maintaining a tracking error of zero under an uncertain environment is impossible; the tracking controller is nonetheless required to bring vessels close to desired berths. The tracking controller must prioritize the avoidance of tracking errors that may cause collisions with obstacles. This paper proposes a training method based on reinforcement learning for a trajectory tracking controller that reduces the probability of collisions with static obstacles. Via numerical simulations, we show that the proposed method reduces the probability of collisions during berthing maneuvers.     On Neural Network Identification for Low-Speed Ship Maneuvering Model

    Several studies on ship maneuvering models have been conducted using captive model tests or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and physical models, such as the maneuvering modeling group (MMG) model. A new system identification method for generating a low-speed maneuvering model using recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and free running model tests is proposed in this study. We especially focus on a low-speed maneuver such as the final phase in berthing to achieve automatic berthing control. Accurate dynamic modeling with minimum modeling error is highly desired to establish a model-based control system. We propose a new loss function that reduces the effect of the noise included in the training data. Besides, we revealed the following facts - an RNN that ignores the memory before a certain time improved the prediction accuracy compared with the "standard" RNN, and the random maneuver test was effective in obtaining an accurate berthing maneuver model. In addition, several low-speed free running model tests were performed for the scale model of the M.V. Esso Osaka.     Explainable Recommendation has attracted a lot of attention due to a renewed interest in explainable artificial intelligence. In particular, post-hoc approaches have proved to be the most easily applicable ones to increasingly complex recommendation models, which are then treated as black boxes. The most recent literature has shown that for post-hoc explanations based on local surrogate models, there are problems related to the robustness of the approach itself. This consideration becomes even more relevant in human-related tasks like recommendation. The explanation also has the arduous task of enhancing increasingly relevant aspects of user experience such as transparency or trustworthiness.     Current evidence on laparoscopic vs. open resection for gastric stromal tumours

    Although the use of laparoscopic surgery is increasing, controversy still surrounds its application for malignant conditions. Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are less demanding in terms of lymphadenectomy, meaning that laparoscopic resection might have a more defined benefit when compared with open resection. To the best of our knowledge, no randomized study exists that compares the laparoscopic and open resection of GISTs. The current study aimed to examine the relevant literature by means of a systematic review. A systematic literature search was performed individually by two authors, in which three independent databases were searched using specific search-terms. Titles, abstracts and full texts were screened, as well as references to relevant articles, in order to comprise a comprehensive list of studies. Data were extracted using a detailed pre-agreed spreadsheet. Studies were evaluated according to the modified MINORS criteria. A total of 10 studies were included in the present review, yielding a total of 14 entries. The majority of studies reported significantly improved perioperative outcomes for the laparoscopic approach, including improved duration of operation, blood loss and length of hospital stay. Only four studies reported long-term outcomes and findings that were controversial, with some studies detecting no statistically significant differences, one reporting improved and one reporting worse disease-free and overall survival for the laparoscopic group. Three studies were deemed to be good quality, two of which had not reported significantly different long-term outcomes, while the third had reported significantly improved outcomes in the open resection group. While there is a clear benefit for performing laparoscopic surgery in patients with GIST with regards to perioperative outcomes, when it comes to long-term oncological outcomes, uncertainty over its application remains. The lack of randomized trials, as well as the poor reporting of retrospective studies, limits the amount of evidence that is currently available. Laparoscopic surgery for GIST is certainly safe, feasible and likely cost-effective; however, further studies are required to inform on whether this technique is superior to open resection
