Inter-study reproducibility of arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging for measurement of renal perfusion in healthy volunteers at 3 Tesla
Background:
Measurement of renal perfusion is a crucial part of measuring kidney function. Arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL MRI) is a non-invasive method of measuring renal perfusion using magnetised blood as endogenous contrast. We studied the reproducibility of ASL MRI in normal volunteers.

Methods:
ASL MRI was performed in healthy volunteers on 2 occasions using a 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner with flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) perfusion preparation with a steady state free precession (True-FISP) pulse sequence. Kidney volume was measured from the scanned images. Routine serum and urine biochemistry were measured prior to MRI scanning.

Results:
12 volunteers were recruited yielding 24 kidneys, with a mean participant age of 44.1 ± 14.6 years, blood pressure of 136/82 mmHg and chronic kidney disease epidemiology formula estimated glomerular filtration rate (CKD EPI eGFR) of 98.3 ± 15.1 ml/min/1.73 m2. Mean kidney volumes measured using the ellipsoid formula and voxel count method were 123.5 ± 25.5 cm3, and 156.7 ± 28.9 cm3 respectively. Mean kidney perfusion was 229 ± 41 ml/min/100 g and mean cortical perfusion was 327 ± 63 ml/min/100 g, with no significant differences between ASL MRIs. Mean absolute kidney perfusion calculated from kidney volume measured during the scan was 373 ± 71 ml/min. Bland Altman plots were constructed of the cortical and whole kidney perfusion measurements made at ASL MRIs 1 and 2. These showed good agreement between measurements, with a random distribution of means plotted against differences observed. The intra class correlation for cortical perfusion was 0.85, whilst the within subject coefficient of variance was 9.2%. The intra class correlation for whole kidney perfusion was 0.86, whilst the within subject coefficient of variance was 7.1%.

Conclusions:
ASL MRI at 3.0 Tesla provides a repeatable method of measuring renal perfusion in healthy subjects without the need for administration of exogenous compounds. We have established normal values for renal perfusion using ASL MRI in a cohort of healthy volunteers.

Effects of feeding low levels of crude glycerin with or without other by-products on performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot heifers
Expansion of the renewable fuels industries has increased availability of by-products that are well suited for use as cattle feed. Glycerin is among the principal by-products of biodiesel production, comprising approximately 10% (by weight) of the soybean oil that is used to manufacture soy-based diesel fuel. Our previous research evaluated effects of including between 0% and 16% glycerin in flaked-corn finishing diets and revealed that optimal growth performance was achieved with 2% glycerin addition. Our laboratory experiments have suggested that even lower levels of glycerin may be effective at stimulating digestion. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate effects of low levels of glycerin in the diet on performance and carcass characteristics of finishing cattle. Furthermore, because distillers grains and other by-products are increasingly common in feedlot rations, we opted to evaluate glycerin in corn-based finishing diets as well as in diets that consisted of a combination of corn grain, distillers grains, and soybean hulls
Completed cohomology of Shimura curves and a p-adic Jacquet-Langlands correspondence
We study indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real fields F, and give
an example of a cohomological construction of p-adic Jacquet-Langlands
functoriality using completed cohomology. We also study the (tame) levels of
p-adic automorphic forms on these quaternion algebras and give an analogue of
Mazur's `level lowering' principle.Comment: Updated version. Contains some minor corrections compared to the

Algebraic approach to time-delay data analysis for LISA
Cancellation of laser frequency noise in interferometers is crucial for
attaining the requisite sensitivity of the triangular 3-spacecraft LISA
configuration. Raw laser noise is several orders of magnitude above the other
noises and thus it is essential to bring it down to the level of other noises
such as shot, acceleration, etc. Since it is impossible to maintain equal
distances between spacecrafts, laser noise cancellation must be achieved by
appropriately combining the six beams with appropriate time-delays. It has been
shown in several recent papers that such combinations are possible. In this
paper, we present a rigorous and systematic formalism based on algebraic
geometrical methods involving computational commutative algebra, which
generates in principle {\it all} the data combinations cancelling the laser
frequency noise. The relevant data combinations form the first module of
syzygies, as it is called in the literature of algebraic geometry. The module
is over a polynomial ring in three variables, the three variables corresponding
to the three time-delays around the LISA triangle. Specifically, we list
several sets of generators for the module whose linear combinations with
polynomial coefficients generate the entire module. We find that this formalism
can also be extended in a straight forward way to cancel Doppler shifts due to
optical bench motions. The two modules are infact isomorphic.
We use our formalism to obtain the transfer functions for the six beams and
for the generators. We specifically investigate monochromatic gravitational
wave sources in the LISA band and carry out the maximisiation over linear
combinations of the generators of the signal-to-noise ratios with the frequency
and source direction angles as parameters.Comment: 27 Pages, 6 figure
A Theory of Ferroelectric Phase Transition in SrTiO induced by Isotope Replacement
A theory to describe the dielectric anomalies and the ferroelectric phase
transition induced by oxygen isotope replacement in SrTiO is developed. The
proposed model gives consistent explanation between apparently contradictory
experimental results on macroscopic dielectric measurements versus microscopic
lattice dynamical measurements by neutron scattering studies. The essential
feature is described by a 3-state quantum order-disorder system characterizing
the degenerated excited states in addition to the ground state of TiO
cluster. The effect of isotope replacement is taken into account through the
tunneling frequency between the excited states. The dielectric properties are
analyzed by the mean field approximation (MFA), which gives qualitative
agreements with experimental results throughout full range of the isotope
concentration. The phase diagram in the temperature-tunneling
frequencycoordinate is studied by a QMC method to confirm the qualitative
validity of the MFA analysis.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figure
Characterization and application of two RANK-specific antibodies with different biological activities.
Antibodies play an important role in therapy and investigative biomedical research. The TNF-family member Receptor Activator of NF-κB (RANK) is known for its role in bone homeostasis and is increasingly recognized as a central player in immune regulation and epithelial cell activation. However, the study of RANK biology has been hampered by missing or insufficient characterization of high affinity tools that recognize RANK. Here, we present a careful description and comparison of two antibodies, RANK-02 obtained by phage display (Newa, 2014 [1]) and R12-31 generated by immunization (Kamijo, 2006 [2]). We found that both antibodies recognized mouse RANK with high affinity, while RANK-02 and R12-31 recognized human RANK with high and lower affinities, respectively. Using a cell apoptosis assay based on stimulation of a RANK:Fas fusion protein, and a cellular NF-κB signaling assay, we showed that R12-31 was agonist for both species. R12-31 interfered little or not at all with the binding of RANKL to RANK, in contrast to RANK-02 that efficiently prevented this interaction. Depending on the assay and species, RANK-02 was either a weak agonist or a partial antagonist of RANK. Both antibodies recognized human Langerhans cells, previously shown to express RANK, while dermal dendritic cells were poorly labeled. In vivo R12-31 agonist activity was demonstrated by its ability to induce the formation of intestinal villous microfold cells in mice. This characterization of two monoclonal antibodies should now allow better evaluation of their application as therapeutic reagents and investigative tools
Model-Based Security Testing
Security testing aims at validating software system requirements related to
security properties like confidentiality, integrity, authentication,
authorization, availability, and non-repudiation. Although security testing
techniques are available for many years, there has been little approaches that
allow for specification of test cases at a higher level of abstraction, for
enabling guidance on test identification and specification as well as for
automated test generation.
Model-based security testing (MBST) is a relatively new field and especially
dedicated to the systematic and efficient specification and documentation of
security test objectives, security test cases and test suites, as well as to
their automated or semi-automated generation. In particular, the combination of
security modelling and test generation approaches is still a challenge in
research and of high interest for industrial applications. MBST includes e.g.
security functional testing, model-based fuzzing, risk- and threat-oriented
testing, and the usage of security test patterns. This paper provides a survey
on MBST techniques and the related models as well as samples of new methods and
tools that are under development in the European ITEA2-project DIAMONDS.Comment: In Proceedings MBT 2012, arXiv:1202.582
Studying the anisotropy of the gravitational wave stochastic background with LISA
A plethora of gravitational wave stochastic backgrounds populate the
sensitivity window of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. We show that LISA
can detect the anisotropy of the background corresponding to the multipole
moments of order l=2 and 4. The signal-to-noise ratio generated by galactic
white dwarf binary systems could be as high as 60 for 3 yrs of integration, and
LISA could provide valuable information on the spatial distribution of a
variety of galactic sources. We also show that the cross-correlation of the
data sets from two interferometers could marginally lead to meaningful
upper-limits on the degree of isotropy of the primordial gravitational wave
background.Comment: 4 pages, uses RevTe
Particle motion and gravitational lensing in the metric of a dilaton black hole in a de Sitter universe
We consider the metric exterior to a charged dilaton black hole in a de
Sitter universe. We study the motion of a test particle in this metric.
Conserved quantities are identified and the Hamilton-Jacobi method is employed
for the solutions of the equations of motion. At large distances from the black
hole the Hubble expansion of the universe modifies the effective potential such
that bound orbits could exist up to an upper limit of the angular momentum per
mass for the orbiting test particle. We then study the phenomenon of strong
field gravitational lensing by these black holes by extending the standard
formalism of strong lensing to the non-asymptotically flat dilaton-de Sitter
metric. Expressions for the various lensing quantities are obtained in terms of
the metric coefficients.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex, 1 eps figures; discussion improved; typos corrected;

Positive pion absorption on 3He using modern trinucleon wave functions
We study pion absorption on 3He employing trinucleon wave functions
calculated from modern realistic NN interactions (Paris, CD Bonn). Even though
the use of the new wave functions leads to a significant improvement over older
calculations with regard to both cross section and polarization data, there are
hints that polarization data with quasifree kinematics cannot be described by
just two-nucleon absorption mechanisms.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
