    An earlier opinion piece considered the professional issues surrounding the occupational therapist’s dress code within the work place (Davys et al, 2006). This second paper considers the role of the occupational therapist when a client choice of clothing may conflict with social expectations and negatively impact upon social inclusion. Three practice based scenarios are presented, which serve as the prompts for reflection upon informed choice, professional responsibilities and the therapeutic relationship. This paper concludes that there needs to be debate about the conflict between each of these areas and the concept of social inclusion

    Higher-spin Realisations of the Bosonic String

    It has been shown that certain WW algebras can be linearised by the inclusion of a spin--1 current. This provides a way of obtaining new realisations of the WW algebras. Recently such new realisations of W3W_3 were used in order to embed the bosonic string in the critical and non-critical W3W_3 strings. In this paper, we consider similar embeddings in W2,4W_{2,4} and W2,6W_{2,6} strings. The linearisation of W2,4W_{2,4} is already known, and can be achieved for all values of central charge. We use this to embed the bosonic string in critical and non-critical W2,4W_{2,4} strings. We then derive the linearisation of W2,6W_{2,6} using a spin--1 current, which turns out to be possible only at central charge c=390c=390. We use this to embed the bosonic string in a non-critical W2,6W_{2,6} string.Comment: 8 pages. CTP TAMU-10/95

    Liouville and Toda Solitons in M-theory

    We study the general form of the equations for isotropic single-scalar, multi-scalar and dyonic pp-branes in superstring theory and M-theory, and show that they can be cast into the form of Liouville, Toda (or Toda-like) equations. The general solutions describe non-extremal isotropic pp-branes, reducing to the previously-known extremal solutions in limiting cases.     Black Holes in Higher-Derivative Gravity

    Extensions of Einstein gravity with higher-order derivative terms arise in string theory and other effective theories, as well as being of interest in their own right. In this paper we study static black-hole solutions in the example of Einstein gravity with additional quadratic curvature terms. A Lichnerowicz-type theorem simplifies the analysis by establishing that they must have vanishing Ricci scalar curvature. By numerical methods we then demonstrate the existence of further black-hole solutions over and above the Schwarzschild solution.     Spectrum-generating Symmetries for BPS Solitons

    We show that there exist nonlinearly realised duality symmetries that are independent of the standard supergravity global symmetries, and which provide active spectrum-generating symmetries for the fundamental BPS solitons. The additional ingredient, in any spacetime dimension, is a single scaling transformation that allows one to map between BPS solitons with different masses. Without the inclusion of this additional transformation, which is a symmetry of the classical equations of motion, but not the action, it is not possible to find a spectrum-generating symmetry. The necessity of including this scaling transformation highlights the vulnerability of duality multiplets to quantum anomalies. We argue that fundamental BPS solitons may be immune to this threat.Comment: References added. Latex, 29 page

    Lichnerowicz Modes and Black Hole Families in Ricci Quadratic Gravity

    A new branch of black hole solutions occurs along with the standard Schwarzschild branch in nn-dimensional extensions of general relativity including terms quadratic in the Ricci tensor. The standard and new branches cross at a point determined by a static negative-eigenvalue eigenfunction of the Lichnerowicz operator, analogous to the Gross-Perry-Yaffe eigenfunction for the Schwarzschild solution in standard n=4n=4 dimensional general relativity. This static eigenfunction has two r\^oles: both as a perturbation away from Schwarzschild along the new black-hole branch and also as a threshold unstable mode lying at the edge of a domain of Gregory-Laflamme-type instability of the Schwarzschild solution for small-radius black holes. A thermodynamic analogy with the Gubser and Mitra conjecture on the relation between quantum thermodynamic and classical dynamical instabilities leads to a suggestion that there may be a switch of stability properties between the old and new black-hole branches for small black holes with radii below the branch crossing point.Comment: 33 pages, 8 figure

    Spherically Symmetric Solutions in Higher-Derivative Gravity

    Extensions of Einstein gravity with quadratic curvature terms in the action arise in most effective theories of quantised gravity, including string theory. This article explores the set of static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat solutions of this class of theories. An important element in the analysis is the careful treatment of a Lichnerowicz-type `no-hair' theorem. From a Frobenius analysis of the asymptotic small-radius behaviour, the solution space is found to split into three asymptotic families, one of which contains the classic Schwarzschild solution. These three families are carefully analysed to determine the corresponding numbers of free parameters in each. One solution family is capable of arising from coupling to a distributional shell of matter near the origin; this family can then match on to an asymptotically flat solution at spatial infinity without encountering a horizon. Another family, with horizons, contains the Schwarzschild solution but includes also non-Schwarzschild black holes. The third family of solutions obtained from the Frobenius analysis is nonsingular and corresponds to `vacuum' solutions.     Quantising Higher-spin String Theories

    In this paper, we examine the conditions under which a higher-spin string theory can be quantised. The quantisability is crucially dependent on the way in which the matter currents are realised at the classical level. In particular, we construct classical realisations for the W2,sW_{2,s} algebra, which is generated by a primary spin-ss current in addition to the energy-momentum tensor, and discuss the quantisation for s8s\le8. From these examples we see that quantum BRST operators can exist even when there is no quantum generalisation of the classical W2,sW_{2,s} algebra. Moreover, we find that there can be several inequivalent ways of quantising a given classical theory, leading to different BRST operators with inequivalent cohomologies. We discuss their relation to certain minimal models. We also consider the hierarchical embeddings of string theories proposed recently by Berkovits and Vafa, and show how the already-known WW strings provide examples of this phenomenon. Attempts to find higher-spin fermionic generalisations lead us to examine the whether classical BRST operators for W2,n2W_{2,{n\over 2}} (nn odd) algebras can exist. We find that even though such fermionic algebras close up to null fields, one cannot build nilpotent BRST operators, at least of the standard form.Comment: CTP TAMU-24/94, KUL-TF-94/11, SISSA-135/94/E

    Dilatonic p-brane solitons

    We find new 4-brane and 5-brane solitons in massive gauged D=6D=6, N=2N=2 and D=7D=7, N=1N=1 supergravities. In each case, the solutions preserve half of the original supersymmetry. These solutions make use of the metric and dilaton fields only. We also present more general dilatonic (D2)(D-2)-branes in DD dimensions.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, no figure
