This paper studies decision rules for accepting reservations for stays in a hotel based on deterministic and stochastic mathematical programming techniques. Booking control strategies are constructed that include ideas for nesting, booking limits and bid prices. We allow for multiple day stays. Instead of optimizing a decision period consisting of a fixed set of target booking days, we simultaneously optimize the complete range of target booking dates that are open for booking at the moment of optimization. This yields a rolling horizon of overlapping decision periods, which will conveniently capture the effects of overlapping stays.Revenue management;Mathematical programming;Yield management

Reconstructing Past Ocean Salinity ((delta)18Owater)
Temperature and salinity are two of the key properties of ocean water masses. The distribution of these two independent but related characteristics reflects the interplay of incoming solar radiation (insolation) and the uneven distribution of heat loss and gain by the ocean, with that of precipitation, evaporation, and the freezing and melting of ice. Temperature and salinity to a large extent, determine the density of a parcel of water. Small differences in temperature and salinity can increase or decrease the density of a water parcel, which can lead to convection. Once removed from the surface of the ocean where 'local' changes in temperature and salinity can occur, the water parcel retains its distinct relationship between (potential) temperature and salinity. We can take advantage of this 'conservative' behavior where changes only occur as a result of mixing processes, to track the movement of water in the deep ocean (Figure 1). The distribution of density in the ocean is directly related to horizontal pressure gradients and thus (geostrophic) ocean currents. During the Quaternary when we have had systematic growth and decay of large land based ice sheets, salinity has had to change. A quick scaling argument following that of Broecker and Peng [1982] is: the modern ocean has a mean salinity of 34.7 psu and is on average 3500m deep. During glacial maxima sea level was on the order of {approx}120m lower than present. Simply scaling the loss of freshwater (3-4%) requires an average increase in salinity a similar percentage or to {approx}35.9psu. Because much of the deep ocean is of similar temperature, small changes in salinity have a large impact on density, yielding a potentially different distribution of water masses and control of the density driven (thermohaline) ocean circulation. It is partly for this reason that reconstructions of past salinity are of interest to paleoceanographers
Hydrodynamic Description of Granular Convection
We present a hydrodynamic model that captures the essence of granular
dynamics in a vibrating bed. We carry out the linear stability analysis and
uncover the instability mechanism that leads to the appearance of the
convective rolls via a supercritical bifurcation of a bouncing solution. We
also explicitly determine the onset of convection as a function of control
parameters and confirm our picture by numerical simulations of the continuum

Equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter and collisions of neutron-rich nuclei
The ratio of pre-equilibrium neutrons to protons from collisions of
neutron-rich nuclei is studied as a function of their kinetic energies. This
ratio is found to be sensitive to the density dependence of the nuclear
symmetry energy, but is independent of the compressibility of symmetric nuclear
matter and the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. The experimental
measurement of this ratio thus provides a novel means for determining the

Daisychain Search and Interactive Visualisation of Homologs in Genome Assemblies
Daisychain is an interactive graph visualisation and search tool for custom-built gene homology databases. The main goal of Daisychain is to allow researchers working with specific genes to identify homologs in other annotation releases. The gene-centric representation includes local gene neighborhood to distinguish orthologs and paralogs by local synteny. The software supports genome sequences in FASTA format and GFF3 formatted annotation files, and the process of building the homology database requires a minimum amount of user interaction. Daisychain includes an integrated web viewer that can be used for both data analysis and data publishing. The web interface extends KnetMaps.js and is based on JavaScript
The first Swift X-ray Flash: The faint afterglow of XRF 050215B
We present the discovery of XRF 050215B and its afterglow. The burst was
detected by the Swift BAT during the check-out phase and observations with the
X-ray telescope began approximately 30 minutes after the burst. These
observations found a faint, slowly fading X-ray afterglow near the centre of
the error box as reported by the BAT. Infrared data, obtained at UKIRT after 10
hours also revealed a very faint K-band afterglow. The afterglow appear unusual
since it is very faint, especially in the infrared with K>20 only 9 hours post
burst. The X-ray and infrared lightcurves exhibit a slow, monotonic decay with
alpha=0.8 and no evidence for steepening associated with the jet break to 10
days post burst. We discuss possible explanations for the faintness and slow
