Recovery of continuous wave squeezing at low frequencies
We propose and demonstrate a system that produces squeezed vacuum using a
pair of optical parametric amplifiers. This scheme allows the production of
phase sidebands on the squeezed vacuum which facilitate phase locking in
downstream applications. We observe strong, stably locked, continuous wave
vacuum squeezing at frequencies as low as 220 kHz. We propose an alternative
resonator configuration to overcome low frequency squeezing degradation caused
by the optical parametric amplifiers.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Origin of the different conductive behavior in pentavalent-ion-doped anatase and rutile TiO
The electronic properties of pentavalent-ion (Nb, Ta, and
I) doped anatase and rutile TiO are studied using spin-polarized
GGA+\emph{U} calculations. Our calculated results indicate that these two
phases of TiO exhibit different conductive behavior upon doping. For doped
anatase TiO, some up-spin-polarized Ti 3\emph{d} states lie near the
conduction band bottom and cross the Fermi level, showing an \emph{n}-type
half-metallic character. For doped rutile TiO, the Fermi level is pinned
between two up-spin-polarized Ti 3\emph{d} gap states, showing an insulating
character. These results can account well for the experimental different
electronic transport properties in Nb (Ta)-doped anatase and rutile TiO.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Gradient echo memory in an ultra-high optical depth cold atomic ensemble
Quantum memories are an integral component of quantum repeaters - devices
that will allow the extension of quantum key distribution to communication
ranges beyond that permissible by passive transmission. A quantum memory for
this application needs to be highly efficient and have coherence times
approaching a millisecond. Here we report on work towards this goal, with the
development of a Rb magneto-optical trap with a peak optical depth of
1000 for the D2 transition using spatial and temporal
dark spots. With this purpose-built cold atomic ensemble to implement the
gradient echo memory (GEM) scheme. Our data shows a memory efficiency of % and coherence times up to 195 s, which is a factor of four greater
than previous GEM experiments implemented in warm vapour cells.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Squeezed light at sideband frequencies below 100 kHz from a single OPA
Quantum noise of the electromagnetic field is one of the limiting noise
sources in interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Shifting the spectrum
of squeezed vacuum states downwards into the acoustic band of gravitational
wave detectors is therefore of challenging demand to quantum optics
experiments. We demonstrate a system that produces nonclassical continuous
variable states of light that are squeezed at sideband frequencies below 100
kHz. A single optical parametric amplifier (OPA) is used in an optical noise
cancellation scheme providing squeezed vacuum states with coherent bright phase
modulation sidebands at higher frequencies. The system has been stably locked
for half an hour limited by thermal stability of our laboratory.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
A feature-rich transmission spectrum for WASP-127b
WASP-127b is one of the lowest density planets discovered to date. With a
sub-Saturn mass () and super-Jupiter radius
(), it orbits a bright G5 star, which is about to
leave the main-sequence. We aim to explore WASP-127b's atmosphere in order to
retrieve its main atmospheric components, and to find hints for its intriguing
inflation and evolutionary history. We used the ALFOSC spectrograph at the NOT
telescope to observe a low resolution (, seeing limited) long-slit
spectroscopic time series during a planetary transit, and present here the
first transmission spectrum for WASP-127b. We find the presence of a strong
Rayleigh slope at blue wavelengths and a hint of Na absorption, although the
quality of the data does not allow us to claim a detection. At redder
wavelengths the absorption features of TiO and VO are the best explanation to
fit the data. Although higher signal-to-noise ratio observations are needed to
conclusively confirm the absorption features, WASP-127b seems to posses a
cloud-free atmosphere and is one of the best targets to perform further

Workplace health promotion: assessing the cardiopulmonary risks of the construction workforce in Hong Kong
Objective
Health needs of different employee subgroups within an industry can differ. We report the results of a workplace cardiopulmonary risk assessment targeting workers and support staff in the construction industry.
Methods
A free worksite-based cardiopulmonary risk assessment for 1,903 workers on infrastructural contracts across Hong Kong was initiated in May 2014. Cardiopulmonary risk screening was performed in 60-minute blocks for approximately 30 workers/block with individualized feedback and lifestyle counseling. Risk profiles stratified by occupational roles are differentiated using the χ2-test for categorical and Student’s t-test for continuous variables.
Results
Most construction workers and clerks/professionals were male (83.2% and 71.2%, respectively) and Chinese (78.7% and 90.9%, respectively). Construction workers were older (mean: 44.9 years, SD 11.5) and less well-educated (6.1% received tertiary education) than clerks/professionals (35.0 years, 10.7; 72.6% received tertiary education), but more likely to be hypertensive (22.6% vs. 15.4%, p<0.001), overweight/obese (71.7% vs. 56.6%, p<0.001), centrally obese (53.1% vs. 35.5%, p<0.001), and have undesirable levels of high-density lipoprotein (41.6% vs. 35.8%, p<0.05) and diabetic levels of non-fasting blood glucose (4.3% vs. 1.6%, p<0.05). Up to 12.6% of construction workers and 9.7% of office clerks/professions had three or more metabolic syndrome risk factors. While construction workers were more likely than clerks/professionals to be daily smokers, they reported better work-related physical activity and diet.
Conclusions
Simple worksite health risk screening can identify potentially high-cardiopulmonary-risk construction industry employee subgroups for onward confirmatory referral. Separate cardiopulmonary health promotion strategies that account for the varying lifestyle profiles of the two employee subgroups in the industry appear justified.published_or_final_versio
Generation of Squeezing in Higher Order Hermite-Gaussian Modes with an Optical Parametric Amplifier
We demonstrate quantum correlations in the transverse plane of continuous
wave light beams by producing -4.0 dB, -2.6 dB and -1.5 dB of squeezing in the
TEM00, TEM10 and TEM20 Hermite- Gauss modes with an optical parametric
amplifier, respectively. This has potential applications in quantum information
networking, enabling parallel quantum information processing. We describe the
setup for the generation of squeezing and analyze the effects of various
experimental issues such as mode overlap between pump and seed and nonlinear
