Mirror Symmetry of Calabi-Yau Manifolds and Flat Coordinates
We study mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau manifolds within the framework of the
Gauss-Manin system. Applying the flat coordinates to the Gauss-Manin system for
the periods, we derive differential equations for the mirror map in addition to
the ordinary Picard-Fuchs equations for the periods. These equations are
obtained for a class of one-parameter models and a two-parameter model of
Fermat type Calabi-Yau manifolds.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, no figure
Stability in controlled L-theory
We prove a squeezing/stability theorem for delta-epsilon controlled L-groups
when the control map is a fibration on a finite polyhedron. A relation with
boundedly-controlled L-groups is also discussed.Comment: This is the version published by Geometry & Topology Monographs on 22

Quantum annealing with Jarzynski equality
We show a practical application of the Jarzynski equality in quantum
computation. Its implementation may open a way to solve combinatorial
optimization problems, minimization of a real single-valued function, cost
function, with many arguments. We consider to incorpolate the Jarzynski
equality into quantum annealing, which is one of the generic algorithms to
solve the combinatorial optimization problem. The ordinary quantum annealing
suffers from non-adiabatic transitions whose rate is characterized by the
minimum energy gap of the quantum system under
consideration. The quantum sweep speed is therefore restricted to be extremely
slow for the achievement to obtain a solution without relevant errors. However,
in our strategy shown in the present study, we find that such a difficulty
would not matter.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Log-aesthetic Curves as Similarity Geometric Analogue of Euler's Elasticae
In this paper we consider the log-aesthetic curves and their generalization
which are used in CAGD. We consider those curves under similarity geometry and
characterize them as stationary integrable flow on plane curves which is
governed by the Burgers equation. We propose a variational formulation of those
curves whose Euler-Lagrange equation yields the stationary Burgers equation.
Our result suggests that the log-aesthetic curves and their generalization can
be regarded as the similarity geometric analogue of Euler's elasticae
Microscopic approach to large-amplitude deformation dynamics with local QRPA inertial masses
We have developed a new method for determining microscopically the
fivedimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, on the basis of the
adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method. This method consists of
the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equation and the local QRPA
(LQRPA) equations, which are an extension of the usual QRPA (quasiparticle
random phase approximation) to non-HFB-equilibrium points, on top of the CHFB
states. One of the advantages of our method is that the inertial functions
calculated with this method contain the contributions of the time-odd
components of the mean field, which are ignored in the widely-used cranking
formula. We illustrate usefulness of our method by applying to oblate-prolate
shape coexistence in 72Kr and shape phase transition in neutron-rich Cr
isotopes around N=40.Comment: 6pages, talk given at Rutherford Centennial Conference on Nuclear

Discovery of H alpha absorption in the unusual broad absorption line quasar SDSS J083942.11+380526.3
We discovered an H alpha absorption in a broad H alpha emission line of an
unusual broad absorption line quasar, SDSS J083942.11+380526.3 at z=2.318, by
near-infrared spectroscopy with the Cooled Infrared Spectrograph and Camera for
OHS (CISCO) on the Subaru telescope. The Presence of non-stellar H alpha
absorption is known only in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 to date, thus our
discovery is the first case for quasars. The H alpha absorption line is
blueshifted by 520 km/s relative to the H alpha emission line, and its redshift
almost coincides with those of UV low-ionization metal absorption lines. The
width of the H alpha absorption (~ 340 km/s) is similar to those of the UV
low-ionization absorption lines. These facts suggest that the H alpha and the
low-ionization metal absorption lines are produced by the same low-ionization
gas which has a substantial amount of neutral gas. The column density of the
neutral hydrogen is estimated to be ~ 10^18 cm^-2 by assuming a gas temperature
of 10,000 K from the analysis of the curve of growth. The continuum spectrum is
reproduced by a reddened (E(B-V) ~ 0.15 mag for the SMC-like reddening law)
composite quasar spectrum. Furthermore, the UV spectrum of SDSS
J083942.11+380526.3 shows a remarkable similarity to that of NGC 4151 in its
low state, suggesting the physical condition of the absorber in SDSS
J083942.11+380526.3 is similar to that of NGC 4151 in the low state. As
proposed for NGC 4151, SDSS J083942.11+380526.3 may be also seen through the
close direction of the surface of the obscuring torus.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
Structure of Strange Dwarfs with Color Superconducting Core
We study effects of two-flavor color superconductivity on the structure of
strange dwarfs, which are stellar objects with similar masses and radii with
ordinary white dwarfs but stabilized by the strange quark matter core. We find
that unpaired quark matter is a good approximation to the core of strange
dwarfs.Comment: 8 pages 5 figures, J. Phys. G, accepte
Game-theoretic versions of strong law of large numbers for unbounded variables
We consider strong law of large numbers (SLLN) in the framework of
game-theoretic probability of Shafer and Vovk (2001). We prove several versions
of SLLN for the case that Reality's moves are unbounded. Our game-theoretic
versions of SLLN largely correspond to standard measure-theoretic results.
However game-theoretic proofs are different from measure-theoretic ones in the
explicit consideration of various hedges. In measure-theoretic proofs existence
of moments are assumed, whereas in our game-theoretic proofs we assume
availability of various hedges to Skeptic for finite prices
