Visible luminescence from hydrogenated amorphous silicon modified by femtosecond laser radiation
Visible luminescence is observed from the composite of SiO2 with embedded silicon nanocrystallites produced by femtosecond laser irradiation of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) film in air. The photoluminescence originates from the defect states at the interface between silicon crystallites and SiO2 matrix. The method could be used for fabrication of luminescent layers to increase energy conversion of a-Si:H solar cells
Cytomorphometric indicators of the gingiva epitheliocytes of patients with ischemic heart disease on the background of taking acetylsalicylic acid
The aim is to study the cytological and morphometric characteristics of gingiva epitheliocytes in patients with IHD who are constantly taking ASA drugs. To determine the dental status, 92 patients aged 40-60 years who are on outpatient treatment of IHD were examined. An in-depth scientific study was conducted and the results of cytomorphometric indicators of the gingiva epitheliocytes of patients with ischemic heart disease, constantly taking acetylsalicylic acid drugs, were presente
DNA detection by THz pumping
Our results demonstrate a new method for label-free, real-time
oligonucleotide characterisation by their self-resonant modes, which are unique
to their conformation and sequence. We anticipate that our assay will be used
as a starting point for a more detailed investigation of the aforementioned
mechanism, which can be used as a basis for oligonucleotide detection and
analysis. Furthermore, this technique can be applied to improve existing modern
genetics technologies.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Hybrid fuzzy and sliding-mode control for motorised tether spin-up when coupled with axial vibration
A hybrid fuzzy sliding mode controller is applied to the control of motorised tether spin-up coupled with an axial oscillation phenomenon. A six degree of freedom dynamic model of a motorised momentum exchange tether is used as a basis for interplanetary payload exchange. The tether comprises a symmetrical double payload configuration, with an outrigger counter inertia and massive central facility. It is shown that including axial elasticity permits an enhanced level of performance prediction accuracy and a useful departure from the usual rigid body representations, particularly for accurate payload positioning at strategic points. A special simulation program has been devised in MATLAB and MATHEMATICA for a given initial condition data case
ADULT ACGUIRED FLATFOOT DEFORMITY (REVIEW)
Flatfoot deformity represents a complex pathology often observed in active adult population. Conservative treatment does not always yield the intended outcome. Various surgical methods addressing mentioned pathology were actively developing during past decades. However, despite diversity of procedures there are many contradictions in respect of necessity and efficiency of a certain procedure especially in grades II and IV of the disease. The paper presents clinical, roentgenological and biomechanical features of acquired flatfoot deformity. The authors analyzed literature publications dedicated to different correction methods adopted in world orthopaedics
Revisiting the 'LSND anomaly' II: critique of the data analysis
This paper, together with a preceding paper, questions the so-called 'LSND
anomaly': a 3.8 sigma excess of antielectronneutrino interactions over standard
backgrounds, observed by the LSND Collaboration in a beam dump experiment with
800 MeV protons. That excess has been interpreted as evidence for the
antimuonneutrino to antielectronneutrino oscillation in the \Deltam2 range from
0.2 eV2 to 2 eV2. Such a \Deltam2 range is incompatible with the widely
accepted model of oscillations between three light neutrino species and would
require the existence of at least one light 'sterile' neutrino. In a preceding
paper, it was concluded that the estimates of standard backgrounds must be
significantly increased. In this paper, the LSND Collaboration's estimate of
the number of antielectronneutrino interactions followed by neutron capture,
and of its error, is questioned. The overall conclusion is that the
significance of the 'LSND anomaly' is not larger than 2.3 sigma.Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, 6 table
