    Coulomb Screening of 2D Massive Dirac Fermions

    A model of 2D massive Dirac fermions, interacting with a instantaneous 1/r1/r Coulomb interaction, is presented to mimic the physics of gapped graphene. The static polarization function is calculated explicitly to analyze screening effect at the finite temperature and density. Results are compared with the massless case . We also show that various other works can be reproduced within our model in a straightforward and unified manner

    Standing wave oscillations in binary mixture convection: from onset via symmetry breaking to period doubling into chaos

    Oscillatory solution branches of the hydrodynamic field equations describing convection in the form of a standing wave (SW) in binary fluid mixtures heated from below are determined completely for several negative Soret coefficients. Galerkin as well as finite-difference simulations were used. They were augmented by simple control methods to obtain also unstable SW states. For sufficiently negative Soret coefficients unstable SWs bifurcate subcritically out of the quiescent conductive state. They become stable via a saddle-node bifurcation when lateral phase pinning is exerted. Eventually their invariance under time-shift by half a period combined with reflexion at midheight of the fluid layer gets broken. Thereafter they terminate by undergoing a period-doubling cascade into chaos

    Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin are xanthophyll carotenoids found within the retina and throughout the visual system. The retina is one of the most metabolically active tissues in the body. The highest concentration of xanthophylls is found within the retina, and this selective presence has generated many theories regarding their role in supporting retinal function. Subsequently, the effect of xanthophylls in the prevention and treatment of various eye diseases has been examined through epidemiological studies, animal studies, and clinical trials. This paper attempts to review the epidemiological studies and clinical trials investigating the effects of xanthophylls on the incidence and progression of various eye diseases. Observational studies have reported that increased dietary intake and higher serum levels of lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with lower risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), especially late AMD. Randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials have demonstrated that xanthophyll supplementation increases macular pigment levels, improves visual function, and decreases the risk of progression to late AMD, especially neovascular AMD. Current publications on the preventive and therapeutic effects of lutein and zeaxanthin on cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity have reported encouraging results

    Anisotropic Behavior of Knight Shift in Superconducting State of Na_xCoO_2yH_2O

    The Co Knight shift was measured in an aligned powder sample of Na_xCoO_2yH_2O, which shows superconductivity at T_c \sim 4.6 K. The Knight-shift components parallel (K_c) and perpendicular to the c-axis (along the ab plane K_{ab}) were measured in both the normal and superconducting (SC) states. The temperature dependences of K_{ab} and K_c are scaled with the bulk susceptibility, which shows that the microscopic susceptibility deduced from the Knight shift is related to Co-3d spins. In the SC state, the Knight shift shows an anisotropic temperature dependence: K_{ab} decreases below 5 K, whereas K_c does not decrease within experimental accuracy. This result raises the possibility that spin-triplet superconductivity with the spin component of the pairs directed along the c-axis is realized in Na_xCoO_2yH_2O.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Journal of Physical Society of Japan vol. 75, No.

    Enhancement of bulk second-harmonic generation from silicon nitride films by material composition

    We present a comprehensive tensorial characterization of second-harmonic generation from silicon nitride films with varying composition. The samples were fabricated using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, and the material composition was varied by the reactive gas mixture in the process. We found a six-fold enhancement between the lowest and highest second-order susceptibility, with the highest value of approximately 5 pm/V from the most silicon-rich sample. Moreover, the optical losses were found to be sufficiently small (below 6 dB/cm) for applications. The tensorial results show that all samples retain in-plane isotropy independent of silicon content, highlighting the controllability of the fabrication process.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; Re-submitted to Optics Letter
