Critical Current of the Spin-Triplet Superconducting Phase in Sr2_2RuO4_4

There have been two different proposals for the spin-triplet order parameter of the superconducting phase in Sr2_2RuO4_4; an ff-wave order parameter and the multigap model where some of the bands have the line node. In an effort to propose an experiment that can distinguish two cases, we study the behavior of the supercurrent and compute the critical current for these order parameters when the sample is a thin film with the thickness d≪ξd \ll \xi where ξ\xi is the coherence length. It is found that the supercurrent behaves very differently in two models. This will serve as a sharp test for the identification of the correct order parameter.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Graphics simulation and training aids for advanced teleoperation

Graphics displays can be of significant aid in accomplishing a teleoperation task throughout all three phases of off-line task analysis and planning, operator training, and online operation. In the first phase, graphics displays provide substantial aid to investigate work cell layout, motion planning with collision detection and with possible redundancy resolution, and planning for camera views. In the second phase, graphics displays can serve as very useful tools for introductory training of operators before training them on actual hardware. In the third phase, graphics displays can be used for previewing planned motions and monitoring actual motions in any desired viewing angle, or, when communication time delay prevails, for providing predictive graphics overlay on the actual camera view of the remote site to show the non-time-delayed consequences of commanded motions in real time. This paper addresses potential space applications of graphics displays in all three operational phases of advanced teleoperation. Possible applications are illustrated with techniques developed and demonstrated in the Advanced Teleoperation Laboratory at JPL. The examples described include task analysis and planning of a simulated Solar Maximum Satellite Repair task, a novel force-reflecting teleoperation simulator for operator training, and preview and predictive displays for on-line operations

Who Are Fashion Brand Fans? An Investigation of Antecedents and Outcomes of Brand Commitment

Strong emotional bonds between consumers and brands lead consumers to be involved, committed, and dedicated to brands (Fournier, 1998). These involved and committed consumers exhibit an intense level of loyalty behavior that remains regardless of the brand’s performance and/or situational influences (Oliver, 1999). Thus, manufacturers and retailers that provide consumers with self-reflective branded products (e.g., apparel, accessories) that enable consumers to develop affective bonds may garner more emotional loyalty than retailers and manufacturers that provide branded commodities (e.g., gasoline, bleach)

Demonstration of a High-Fidelity Predictive/Preview Display Technique for Telerobotic Servicing in Space

A highly effective predictive/preview display technique for telerobotic servicing in space under several seconds communication time delay has been demonstrated on a large laboratory scale in May 1993, involving the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as the simulated ground control station and, 2500 miles away, the Goddard Space Flight Center as the simulated satellite servicing set-up. The technique is based on a high-fidelity calibration procedure that enables a high-fidelity overlay of 3-D graphics robot arm and object models over given 2-D TV camera images of robot arm and objects. To generate robot arm motions, the operator can confidently interact in real time with the graphics models of the robot arm and objects overlaid on an actual camera view of the remote work site. The technique also enables the operator to generate high-fidelity synthetic TV camera views showing motion events that are hidden in a given TV camera view or for which no TV camera views are available. The positioning accuracy achieved by this technique for a zoomed-in camera setting was about +/-5 mm, well within the allowable +/-12 mm error margin at the insertion of a 45 cm long tool in the servicing task

Optimal Booking Limits in the Presence of Strategic Consumer Behavior

We consider a two-period airline yield management problem where customers may act strategically. Specifically, we allow for the possibility that a customer may decide to defer purchase in the hope that a ticket cheaper than those currently on offer will become available. We also allow for the possibility that some customers will buy a more expensive ticket if the cheaper tickets are not available. We show how to find optimal booking limits in the presence of such strategic customer behavior. We also explicitly incorporate the fact that, once a booking limit has been reached, demand distributions are now censored distributions

Advanced teleoperation: Technology innovations and applications

The capability to remotely, robotically perform space assembly, inspection, servicing, and science functions would rapidly expand our presence in space, and the cost efficiency of being there. There is considerable interest in developing 'telerobotic' technologies, which also have comparably important terrestrial applications to health care, underwater salvage, nuclear waste remediation and other. Such tasks, both space and terrestrial, require both a robot and operator interface that is highly flexible and adaptive, i.e., capable of efficiently working in changing and often casually structured environments. One systems approach to this requirement is to augment traditional teleoperation with computer assists -- advanced teleoperation. We have spent a number of years pursuing this approach, and highlight some key technology developments and their potential commercial impact. This paper is an illustrative summary rather than self-contained presentation; for completeness, we include representative technical references to our work which will allow the reader to follow up items of particular interest
