Delayed soft X-ray emission lines in the afterglow of GRB 030227
Strong, delayed X-ray line emission is detected in the afterglow of GRB
030227, appearing near the end of the XMM-Newton observation, nearly twenty
hours after the burst. The observed flux in the lines, not simply the
equivalent width, sharply increases from an undetectable level (<1.7e-14
erg/cm^2/s, 3 sigma) to 4.1e-14 erg/cm^2/s in the final 9.7 ks. The line
emission alone has nearly twice as many detected photons as any previous
detection of X-ray lines. The lines correspond well to hydrogen and/or
helium-like emission from Mg, Si, S, Ar and Ca at a redshift z=1.39. There is
no evidence for Fe, Co or Ni--the ultimate iron abundance must be less than a
tenth that of the lighter metals. If the supernova and GRB events are nearly
simultaneous there must be continuing, sporadic power output after the GRB of a
luminosity >~5e46 erg/s, exceeding all but the most powerful quasars.Comment: Submitted to ApJL. 14 pages, 3 figures with AASLaTe
Einstein-Weyl structures and Bianchi metrics
We analyse in a systematic way the (non-)compact four dimensional
Einstein-Weyl spaces equipped with a Bianchi metric. We show that Einstein-Weyl
structures with a Class A Bianchi metric have a conformal scalar curvature of
constant sign on the manifold. Moreover, we prove that most of them are
conformally Einstein or conformally K\"ahler ; in the non-exact Einstein-Weyl
case with a Bianchi metric of the type or , we show that the
distance may be taken in a diagonal form and we obtain its explicit
4-parameters expression. This extends our previous analysis, limited to the

Swift Identification of Dark Gamma-Ray Bursts
We present an optical flux vs. X-ray flux diagram for all known gamma-ray
bursts (GRBs) for which an X-ray afterglow has been detected. We propose an
operational definition of dark bursts as those bursts that are optically
subluminous with respect to the fireball model, i.e., which have an
optical-to-X-ray spectral index beta_OX < 0.5. Out of a sample of 52 GRBs we
identify 5 dark bursts. The definition and diagram serve as a simple and quick
diagnostic tool for identifying dark GRBs based on limited information,
particularly useful for early and objective identification of dark GRBs

Experimental and numerical study of error fields in the CNT stellarator
Sources of error fields were indirectly inferred in a stellarator by
reconciling computed and numerical flux surfaces. Sources considered so far
include the displacements and tilts (but not the deformations, yet) of the four
circular coils featured in the simple CNT stellarator. The flux surfaces were
measured by means of an electron beam and phosphor rod, and were computed by
means of a Biot-Savart field-line tracing code. If the ideal coil locations and
orientations are used in the computation, agreement with measurements is poor.
Discrepancies are ascribed to errors in the positioning and orientation of the
in-vessel interlocked coils. To that end, an iterative numerical method was
developed. A Newton-Raphson algorithm searches for the coils' displacements and
tilts that minimize the discrepancy between the measured and computed flux
surfaces. This method was verified by misplacing and tilting the coils in a
numerical model of CNT, calculating the flux surfaces that they generated, and
testing the algorithm's ability to deduce the coils' displacements and tilts.
Subsequently, the numerical method was applied to the experimental data,
arriving at a set of coil displacements whose resulting field errors exhibited
significantly improved quantitative and qualitative agreement with experimental

Einstein-Weyl structures corresponding to diagonal K\"ahler Bianchi IX metrics
We analyse in a systematic way the four dimensionnal Einstein-Weyl spaces
equipped with a diagonal K\"ahler Bianchi IX metric. In particular, we show
that the subclass of Einstein-Weyl structures with a constant conformal scalar
curvature is the one with a conformally scalar flat - but not necessarily
scalar flat - metric ; we exhibit its 3-parameter distance and Weyl one-form.
This extends previous analysis of Pedersen, Swann and Madsen , limited to the
scalar flat, antiself-dual case. We also check that, in agreement with a
theorem of Derdzinski, the most general conformally Einstein metric in the
family of biaxial K\"ahler Bianchi IX metrics is an extremal metric of Calabi,
conformal to Carter's metric, thanks to Chave and Valent's results.Comment: 15 pages, Latex file, minor modifications, to be published in Class.

ISO far-infrared observations of rich galaxy clusters II. Sersic 159-03
The far-infrared emission from rich galaxy clusters is investigated. Maps
have been obtained by ISO at 60, 100, 135, and 200 microns using the PHT-C
camera. Ground based imaging and spectroscopy were also acquired. Here we
present the results for the cooling flow cluster Sersic 159-03. An infrared
source coincident with the dominant cD galaxy is found. Some off-center sources

Canted antiferromagnetism in phase-pure CuMnSb
We report the low-temperature properties of phase-pure single crystals of the
half-Heusler compound CuMnSb grown by means of optical float-zoning. The
magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and Hall effect of our
single crystals exhibit an antiferromagnetic transition at and a second anomaly at a temperature . Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction establish an
ordered magnetic moment of ,
consistent with the effective moment inferred from the Curie-Weiss dependence
of the susceptibility. Below , the Mn sublattice displays
commensurate type-II antiferromagnetic order with propagation vectors and
magnetic moments along (magnetic space group ).
Surprisingly, below , the moments tilt away from by
a finite angle , forming a canted antiferromagnetic
structure without uniform magnetization consistent with magnetic space group
. Our results establish that type-II antiferromagnetism is not the
zero-temperature magnetic ground state of CuMnSb as may be expected of the
face-centered cubic Mn sublattice.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure
Compact Einstein-Weyl four-dimensional manifolds
We look for four dimensional Einstein-Weyl spaces equipped with a regular
Bianchi metric. Using the explicit 4-parameters expression of the distance
obtained in a previous work for non-conformally-Einstein Einstein-Weyl
structures, we show that only four 1-parameter families of regular metrics
exist on orientable manifolds : they are all of Bianchi type and
conformally K\"ahler ; moreover, in agreement with general results, they have a
positive definite conformal scalar curvature. In a Gauduchon's gauge, they are
compact and we obtain their topological invariants. Finally, we compare our
results to the general analyses of Madsen, Pedersen, Poon and Swann : our
simpler parametrisation allows us to correct some of their assertions.Comment: Latex file, 13 pages, an important reference added and a critical
